Intrinsic Damping of Collective Spin Modes in a Two-Dimensional Fermi Liquid with Spin-Orbit Coupling

Abstract

A Fermi liquid with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is expected to support a new set of collective modes: oscillations of magnetization in the absence of the magnetic field. We show that these modes are damped by the electron-electron interaction even in the limit of an infinitely long wavelength (q=0). The linewidth of the collective mode is on the order of Δ¯2/E(F), where Δ¯ is a characteristic spin-orbit energy splitting and E(F) is the Fermi energy. Such damping is in stark contrast to known damping mechanisms of both charge and spin collective modes in the absence of SOC, all of which disappear at q=0, and arises because none of the components of total spin is conserved in the presence of SOC.

Spin-orbit coupled Fermi liquid theory of ultracold magnetic dipolar fermions

Yi Li, Congjun Wu

We investigate Fermi liquid states of the ultracold magnetic dipolar Fermi gases in the simplest two-component case including both thermodynamic instabilities and collective excitations. The magnetic dipolar interaction is invariant under the simultaneous spin-orbit rotation but not under either the spin or the orbit one. Therefore, the corresponding Fermi liquid theory is intrinsically spin-orbit coupled. This is a fundamental feature of magnetic dipolar Fermi gases different from electric dipolar ones. The Landau interaction matrix is calculated and is diagonalized in terms of the spin-orbit coupled partial-wave channels of the total angular momentum $J$. The leading thermodynamic instabilities lie in the channels of ferromagnetism hybridized with the ferronematic order with $J={1}^{+}$ and the spin-current mode with $J={1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, where $+$ and $\ensuremath{-}$ represent even and odd parities, respectively. An exotic propagating collective mode is identified as spin-orbit coupled Fermi surface oscillations in which spin distribution on the Fermi surface exhibits a topologically nontrivial hedgehog configuration.

Topological phases and collective modes in U(1) and SU(2) sectors of spin-orbit-coupled two-dimensional superfluid Fermi gases

Jeroen P. A. Devreese, Jacques Tempere, Carlos A. R. Sá de Melo

We study the emergence of finite-temperature topological phase transitions of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type and the collective mode spectrum of two-dimensional Fermi gases in the presence of attractive $s$-wave interactions, spin-orbit coupling, and Zeeman fields. We show that neglecting the spin-dependent phase shift on the fermionic wave function misses an important point. Including this spin-dependent shift, we derive the effective low-energy and long-wavelength quantum action for independent (unlocked) phase fluctuations in the U(1) (charge) and SU(2) (spin) sectors and show that at least two phase transitions occur because charge and spin degrees of freedom are coupled due to the presence of spin-orbit and Zeeman fields. Furthermore, we demonstrate that vortex and antivortex excitations are characterized by two topological quantum numbers, corresponding to the quantized circulation of charge and spin velocities. Finally, we show that there are two collective modes in the superfluid phase at low temperatures which arise due to the coupling between sound and transverse-spin waves.

Plasmon manipulation by exchange magnetic field in two-dimensional spin-orbit coupled electronic systems: A higher-order relativistic k.p study

I. A. Nechaev, V. M. Silkin, E. E. Krasovskii

A higher-order relativistic k.p model is developed to describe plasmon excitations in two-dimensional (2D) electronic systems with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and magnetic-exchange interactions. Derived entirely from ab initio band structure, the model allows for a non-Rashba spin-momentum locking and enables a direct coupling of the exchange field to the real spin of electrons. Using the BiTeI trilayer (hexagonal C3v symmetry) and the Si-terminated surface state of TbRh2Si2 (cubic C4v symmetry) as prototypes, we show that the exchange field induces strong, symmetry-dependent modifications of the band structure and plasmon dispersion. In BiTeI, it breaks the sixfold symmetry and leads to anisotropic, nonreciprocal plasmon modes, while in TbRh2Si2 it suppresses the characteristic triple spin winding and alters the plasmon damping. The results reveal that the interplay between SOC and exchange magnetism enables magnetic control of collective charge excitations in 2D spin-orbit systems beyond the Rashba paradigm.

Damping of Long-Wavelength Collective Modes in Spinor Bose-Fermi Mixtures

J. H. Pixley, Xiaopeng Li, S. Das Sarma

Using an effective field theory we describe the low energy bosonic excitations in a three-dimensional ultracold mixture of spin-1 bosons and spin-1/2 fermions. We establish an interesting fermionic excitation induced generic damping of the usual undamped long-wavelength bosonic collective Goldstone modes. Two states with bosons forming either a ferromagnetic or polar superfluid are studied. The linear dispersion of the bosonic Bogoliubov excitations is preserved with a renormalized sound velocity. For the polar superfluid we find both gapless modes (density and spin) are damped, whereas in the ferromagnetic superfluid we find the density (spin) mode is (not) damped. We find that this holds for any mixture of bosons and fermions that are coupled through at least a density-density interaction. In addition, we predict the existence of the Kohn anomaly in the bosonic excitation spectrum of Bose-Fermi mixtures. We discuss the implications of our many-body interaction results for experiments on Bose-Fermi mixtures.

Collective excitations in an asymmetrically spin-polarized quantum well

D. C. Marinescu, J. J. Quinn

We present a phenomenological picture for the many-body excitations of a two-dimensional electron gas in a quantum well spin polarized by a dc magnetic field at an angle $\ensuremath{\theta}$ with the axis of the well. In the framework of the Landau theory of charged Fermi liquids, we determine the frequencies of collective modes by solving a transport equation for quasiparticles in the local electromagnetic field associated with the charge- and spin-density fluctuations. In the long-wavelength limit, analytic solutions for $\ensuremath{\omega}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{q})$ are obtained as functions of the degree of spin polarization and of the angle $\ensuremath{\theta}.$
