Abstract

We investigate Fermi liquid states of the ultracold magnetic dipolar Fermi gases in the simplest two-component case including both thermodynamic instabilities and collective excitations. The magnetic dipolar interaction is invariant under the simultaneous spin-orbit rotation but not under either the spin or the orbit one. Therefore, the corresponding Fermi liquid theory is intrinsically spin-orbit coupled. This is a fundamental feature of magnetic dipolar Fermi gases different from electric dipolar ones. The Landau interaction matrix is calculated and is diagonalized in terms of the spin-orbit coupled partial-wave channels of the total angular momentum $J$. The leading thermodynamic instabilities lie in the channels of ferromagnetism hybridized with the ferronematic order with $J={1}^{+}$ and the spin-current mode with $J={1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, where $+$ and $\ensuremath{-}$ represent even and odd parities, respectively. An exotic propagating collective mode is identified as spin-orbit coupled Fermi surface oscillations in which spin distribution on the Fermi surface exhibits a topologically nontrivial hedgehog configuration.

Unconventional symmetries of Fermi liquid and Cooper pairing properties with electric and magnetic dipolar fermions

Yi Li, Congjun Wu

The rapid experimental progress of ultra-cold dipolar fermions opens up a whole new opportunity to investigate novel many-body physics of fermions. In this article, we review theoretical studies of the Fermi liquid theory and Cooper pairing instabilities of both electric and magnetic dipolar fermionic systems from the perspective of unconventional symmetries. When the electric dipole moments are aligned by the external electric field, their interactions exhibit the explicit d(r(2)-3z(2)) anisotropy. The Fermi liquid properties, including the single-particle spectra, thermodynamic susceptibilities and collective excitations, are all affected by this anisotropy. The electric dipolar interaction provides a mechanism for the unconventional spin triplet Cooper pairing, which is different from the usual spin-fluctuation mechanism in solids and the superfluid (3)He. Furthermore, the competition between pairing instabilities in the singlet and triplet channels gives rise to a novel time-reversal symmetry breaking superfluid state. Unlike electric dipole moments which are induced by electric fields and unquantized, magnetic dipole moments are intrinsic proportional to the hyperfine-spin operators with a Lande factor. Its effects even manifest in unpolarized systems exhibiting an isotropic but spin-orbit coupled nature. The resultant spin-orbit coupled Fermi liquid theory supports a collective sound mode exhibiting a topologically non-trivial spin distribution over the Fermi surface. It also leads to a novel p-wave spin triplet Cooper pairing state whose spin and orbital angular momentum are entangled to the total angular momentum J = 1 dubbed the J-triplet pairing. This J-triplet pairing phase is different from both the spin-orbit coupled (3)He-B phase with J = 0 and the spin-orbit decoupled (3)He-A phase.

Anisotropic-Fermi-liquid theory of ultracold fermionic polar molecules: Landau parameters and collective modes

Ching-Kit Chan, Congjun Wu, Wei-Cheng Lee +1 more

We study the Fermi liquid properties of the cold atomic dipolar Fermi gases with the explicit dipolar anisotropy using perturbative approaches. Due to the explicit dipolar anisotropy, Fermi surfaces exhibit distortions of the ${d}_{{r}^{2}\ensuremath{-}3{z}^{2}}$ type in three dimensions and of the ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$ type in two dimensions. The fermion self-energy, effective mass, and Fermi velocity develop the same anisotropy at the Hartree-Fock level proportional to the interaction strength. The Landau interaction parameters in the isotropic Fermi liquids become the tridiagonal Landau interaction matrices in the dipolar Fermi liquids which renormalize thermodynamic susceptibilities. With large dipolar interaction strength, the Fermi surface collapses along directions perpendicular to the dipole orientation. The dynamic collective zero sound modes exhibit an anisotropic dispersion with the largest sound velocity propagating along the polar directions. Similarly, the longitudinal $p$-wave channel spin mode becomes a propagating mode with an anisotropic dispersion in multicomponent dipolar systems.

Quantum liquid crystal phases and unconventional magnetism in electronic and atomic Fermi systems

Benjamin M. Fregoso

This thesis is devoted to the study of quantum liquid crystal phases in metallic systems and itinerant Fermi systems with dipole-dipole interactions. It is based on published works of Refs. [65, 193, 68, 67, 66]. In the first part of the Thesis, I present the construction of a generalization of the the McMillan- de Gennes theory of nematic-smectic thermal phase transition of classical liquid crystals to describe an analogous quantum phase transition in metallic systems. This theory qualitatively can also describe similar quantum phase transitions in high Tc superconductors. Recent experimental advances in cooling atoms with large electric or magnetic moment[125] make possible the study of novel quantum phases that arise due to the anisotropic and long-range nature of the dipole-dipole interactions. In the next part of the Thesis I present a Landau Fermi liquid theory of one-component Fermi systems with electric or magnetic dipolar interactions. I use this theory to construct an order parameter theory and predict elongated Fermi surface(FS) along the polarization axis. I calculate the temperature and interaction dependence of FS distortions. For a two-component system with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions I predict the existence of “spin textures” in momentum space and of prolate/oblate deformed FS’s. This constitutes a new phase of matter I called ferronematic. Possible observation of this phase in ultracold Fermi gases with large mangnetic moments

Ferromagnetic and nematic non-Fermi liquids in spin-orbit-coupled two-dimensional Fermi gases

Jonathan Ruhman, Erez Berg

We study the fate of a two-dimensional system of interacting fermions with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the dilute limit. The interactions are strongly renormalized at low densities, and give rise to various fermionic liquid crystalline phases, including a spin-density wave, an in-plane ferromagnet, and a nonmagnetic nematic phase, even in the weak-coupling limit. The nature of the ground state in the low-density limit depends on the range of the interactions: for short-range interactions it is the ferromagnet, while for dipolar interactions the nematic phase is favored. Interestingly, the ferromagnetic and nematic phases exhibit strong deviations from Fermi liquid theory, due to the scattering of the fermionic quasiparticles off long-wavelength collective modes. Thus, we argue that a system of interacting fermions with Rashba dispersion is generically a non-Fermi liquid at low densities.

Collective modes of spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases in the repulsive regime

Shang-Shun Zhang, Xiao-Lu Yu, Jinwu Ye +1 more

We investigate the collective modes in the spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gas with repulsive $s$-wave interaction. The interplay between spin-orbit coupling and atom-atom interactions plays the crucial role in the collective behaviors of Fermi gas. In contrast with ordinary Fermi liquid, spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gas has strongly correlated spin and density excitations. Within the scheme of random-phase approximation, we classify collective modes based on the symmetry group and determine their properties via the poles of corresponding correlation functions. Besides, the particle-hole continuum is obtained, where the imaginary part of these correlation functions becomes nonvanishing. We also propose an experimental protocol for detecting these collective modes and discuss corresponding experimental signatures in the ultracold Fermi gases experiment.

The J-triplet Cooper pairing with magnetic dipolar interactions

Yi Li, Congjun Wu

Recently, cold atomic Fermi gases with the large magnetic dipolar interaction have been laser cooled down to quantum degeneracy. Different from electric-dipoles which are classic vectors, atomic magnetic dipoles are quantum-mechanical matrix operators proportional to the hyperfine-spin of atoms, thus provide rich opportunities to investigate exotic many-body physics. Furthermore, unlike anisotropic electric dipolar gases, unpolarized magnetic dipolar systems are isotropic under simultaneous spin-orbit rotation. These features give rise to a robust mechanism for a novel pairing symmetry: orbital p-wave (L = 1) spin triplet (S = 1) pairing with total angular momentum of the Cooper pair J = 1. This pairing is markedly different from both the (3)He-B phase in which J = 0 and the (3)He-A phase in which J is not conserved. It is also different from the p-wave pairing in the single-component electric dipolar systems in which the spin degree of freedom is frozen.
