Abstract

We investigate the collective modes in the spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gas with repulsive $s$-wave interaction. The interplay between spin-orbit coupling and atom-atom interactions plays the crucial role in the collective behaviors of Fermi gas. In contrast with ordinary Fermi liquid, spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gas has strongly correlated spin and density excitations. Within the scheme of random-phase approximation, we classify collective modes based on the symmetry group and determine their properties via the poles of corresponding correlation functions. Besides, the particle-hole continuum is obtained, where the imaginary part of these correlation functions becomes nonvanishing. We also propose an experimental protocol for detecting these collective modes and discuss corresponding experimental signatures in the ultracold Fermi gases experiment.

Collective excitations of a repulsive 2D ultracold Fermi gas with spin–orbit coupling

Lorenzo Gigli, Flavio Toigo

Abstract We describe the effects of spin–orbit (SO) coupling on the collective properties of a two-dimensional (2D) ultracold Fermi gas with Rashba and Dresselhaus SO couplings of equal strength. We first analyse the thermodynamics of the Fermi gas in the absence of repulsive interaction between the atoms (non-interacting system) showing that SO coupling determines one or more second-order phase transitions in the equation of state of the system; we subsequently suggest an experimental strategy that can make these transitions visible. We then study the interacting system using Feynman’s path integral formulation. The aim of this analysis is to describe the collective properties of the system in the paramagnetic phase and in weak non-equilibrium conditions. Particular emphasis is given to the numerical analysis of the collective modes of the system, in particular to the zero sound mode and to the spin modes.

Collective modes of Weyl fermions with repulsive S-wave interaction*

Xun-Gao Wang, Huan‐Yu Wang, J. M. Zhang +1 more

We calculate the spin and density susceptibility of Weyl fermions with repulsive S-wave interaction in ultracold gases. Weyl fermions have a linear dispersion, which is qualitatively different from the parabolic dispersion of conventional materials. We find that there are different collective modes for the different strengths of repulsive interaction by solving the poles equations of the susceptibility in the random-phase approximation. In the long-wavelength limit, the sound velocity and the energy gaps vary with the different strengths of the interaction in the zero sound mode and the gapped modes, respectively. The particle–hole continuum is obtained as well, where the imaginary part of the susceptibility is nonzero.

Normal-state properties of spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases in the upper branch of the energy spectrum

Xiao-Lu Yu, Shang-Shun Zhang, Wu‐Ming Liu

We investigate normal-state properties of spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases with repulsive $s$-wave interaction, in the absence of molecule formation, i.e., in the so-called ``upper branch.'' Within the framework of random-phase approximation, we derive analytical expressions for the quasiparticle lifetime ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{s}$, the effective mass ${m}_{s}^{*}$, and the Green's function renormalization factor ${Z}_{s}$ in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. In contrast to spin-orbit-coupled electron gas with Coulomb interaction, we show that the modifications are dependent on the Rashba band index $s$ and occur in the first order of the spin-orbit-coupling strength. We also calculate experimental observables such as spectral weight, density of state, and specific heat, which exhibit significant differences from their counterparts without spin-orbit coupling. We expect our microscopic calculations of these Fermi-liquid parameters would have immediate applications to the spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases in the upper branch of the energy spectrum.

Spin-orbit coupled Fermi liquid theory of ultracold magnetic dipolar fermions

Yi Li, Congjun Wu

We investigate Fermi liquid states of the ultracold magnetic dipolar Fermi gases in the simplest two-component case including both thermodynamic instabilities and collective excitations. The magnetic dipolar interaction is invariant under the simultaneous spin-orbit rotation but not under either the spin or the orbit one. Therefore, the corresponding Fermi liquid theory is intrinsically spin-orbit coupled. This is a fundamental feature of magnetic dipolar Fermi gases different from electric dipolar ones. The Landau interaction matrix is calculated and is diagonalized in terms of the spin-orbit coupled partial-wave channels of the total angular momentum $J$. The leading thermodynamic instabilities lie in the channels of ferromagnetism hybridized with the ferronematic order with $J={1}^{+}$ and the spin-current mode with $J={1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, where $+$ and $\ensuremath{-}$ represent even and odd parities, respectively. An exotic propagating collective mode is identified as spin-orbit coupled Fermi surface oscillations in which spin distribution on the Fermi surface exhibits a topologically nontrivial hedgehog configuration.

Collective modes as a probe of imbalanced Fermi gases

Jonathan M. Edge, Nigel R. Cooper

We theoretically investigate the collective modes of imbalanced two-component one-dimensional Fermi gases with attractive interactions. This is done for trapped and untrapped systems both at zero and nonzero temperature, using self-consistent mean-field theory and the random phase approximation. We discuss how the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state can be detected and the periodicity of the associated density modulations determined from its collective mode spectrum. We also investigate the accuracy of the single-mode approximation for low-lying collective excitations in a trap by comparing frequencies obtained via sum rules with frequencies obtained from direct collective mode calculations. It is found that, for collective excitations where the atomic clouds of the two spin-species oscillate largely in phase, the single-mode approximation holds well for a large parameter regime. Finally, we investigate the collective mode spectrum obtained by parametric modulation of the coupling constant.

Collective excitations of a general spin-3/2 Fermi gas

Bei Xu, Zhongze Guo, Qiang Gu

Abstract Collective excitation modes in a general 3D homogenous spin-3/2 Fermi gas with spin-dependent contact interactions are investigated by two-particle Green’s functions and diagram techniques. Energy spectra for two branches of charge-density waves and three branches of transverse spin-density waves are obtained within the random-phase approximation. All spectra are gapless and linear in the small wave vector q, with their slopes dependent on the interaction parameters. It is also found that the spin-mixing interaction has effects on the transverse spin-density waves, but not on the charge-density modes. When the system satisfies SU(4) symmetry, the two charge-density modes become degenerate and two of the three transverse spin-density modes are degenerate, too. Furthermore, static spin susceptibilities are discussed in detail. It is found that susceptibilities increase with the enhancement of all interaction parameters, and become divergent at certain points. This phenomenon is analogous to the Stoner transition in spin-1/2 fermion gas.
