Spontaneous spin textures in dipolar spinor condensates: A Dirac string gas approach

Abstract

We study the spontaneous spin textures induced by magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in ferromagnetic spinor condensates under various trap geometries. At the mean-field level, we show the system is dual to a Dirac string gas with a negative string tension in which the ground state spin texture can be easily determined. We find that three-dimensional condensates prefer a meronlike vortex texture, quasi-one-dimensional condensates prefer the axially polarized flare texture, while condensates in quasi-two-dimensions exhibit either a meron texture or an in-plane polarized texture.

Spontaneous Spin Textures in Dipolar Spinor Condensates

S. Yi, Han Pu

We have mapped out a detailed phase diagram that shows the ground state structure of a spin-1 condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. We show that the interplay between the dipolar and the spin-exchange interactions induces a rich variety of quantum phases that exhibit spontaneous magnetic ordering in the form of intricate spin textures.

Spin textures in condensates with large dipole moments

J. A. M. Huhtamäki, Masahiro O. Takahashi, Tapio Simula +2 more

We have solved numerically the ground states of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of dipolar interparticle forces using a semiclassical approach. Our motivation is to model, in particular, the spontaneous spin textures emerging in quantum gases with large dipole moments, such as $^{52}\mathrm{Cr}$ or $\mathrm{Dy}$ condensates, or ultracold gases consisting of polar molecules. For a pancake-shaped harmonic (optical) potential, we present the ground-state phase diagram spanned by the strength of the nonlinear coupling and dipolar interactions. In an elongated harmonic potential, we observe a helical spin texture. The textures calculated according to the semiclassical model in the absence of external polarizing fields are predominantly analogous to previously reported results for a ferromagnetic $F=1$ spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, suggesting that the spin textures arising from the dipolar forces are largely independent of the value of the quantum number $F$ or the origin of the dipolar interactions.

Dipolar Bose gas with $lt;i$gt;SU$lt;/i$gt;(3) spin−orbit coupling held under a toroidal trap

Fang Wang, Jia Liu, Si-Lin Chen +3 more

We consider a dipolar spin-1 Bose gas with SU(3) spin−orbit coupling trapped in a two-dimensional toroidal trap. Due to the combined effects of SU(3) spin−orbit coupling, dipole−dipole interaction, and spin−exchange interaction, the system exhibits a rich variety of ground-state phases and topological defects, including modified stripe, azimuthal distributed petal and triangular lattice, double-quantum spin vortices, and so on. In particular, by studying the spin texture of such a system, it is found that the formation and transformation between meron and skyrmion topological spin textures can be realized by a choice of dipole−dipole interaction, SU(3) spin−orbit coupling, and spin−exchange interaction. We also give an experimental protocol to observe such novel states within current experimental capacity.

Dirac monopoles and dipoles in ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Craig M. Savage, Janne Ruostekoski

We investigate a radial spin hedgehog, analogous to the Dirac monopole, in an optically trapped atomic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. By joining together a monopole-antimonopole pair, we may form a vortex line with free ends. We numerically simulate the three-dimensional dynamics and imaginary time relaxation of these structures to nonsingular textures and show that they can be observable for realistic experimental parameters.

Creating vortices in dipolar spinor condensates via rapid adiabatic passage

J.-N. Zhang, Liang He, Han Pu +2 more

We propose to create vortices in spin-1 condensates via magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. Starting with a polarized condensate prepared under large axial magnetic field, we show that by gradually inverting the field, population transfer among different spin states can be realized in a controlled manner. Under optimal condition, we generate a doubly quantized vortex state containing nearly all atoms in the condensate. The resulting vortex state is a direct manifestation of the dipole-dipole interaction and spin textures in spinor condensates. We also point out that the whole process can be qualitatively described by a simple three-level rapid adiabatic passage model.

Spontaneously Modulated Spin Textures in a Dipolar Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate

Mukund Vengalattore, Sabrina R. Leslie, Jennie Guzman +1 more

Helical spin textures in a 87Rb F=1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate are found to decay spontaneously toward a spatially modulated structure of spin domains. The formation of this modulated phase is ascribed to magnetic dipolar interactions that energetically favor the short-wavelength domains over the long-wavelength spin helix. The reduction of dipolar interactions by a sequence of rf pulses results in a suppression of the modulated phase, thereby confirming the role of dipolar interactions in this process. This study demonstrates the significance of magnetic dipole interactions in degenerate 87Rb F=1 spinor gases.
