Second-order interference of chaotic light reflected from random medium

Abstract

We consider the reflection from a random medium of light with short coherence length. We found that the second-order correlation function of light can have a peak in a direction where the reflection angle is equal to the angle of incidence. This occurs when the size of the region, from which light is collected, is larger than the coherence length.

On the speckle correlation in nonlinear random media

R. Bressoux, R. Maynard

We calculate the intensity-intensity correlation functions for the light transmitted through a slab made of a nonlinear and random medium at the lowest order of the nonlinear interaction. We obtain the short-range correlation function as a function of the intensity and angles: it depends on a characteristic length of the nonlinear system. This characteristic length decribes the loss of correlation due to the phase shift through the change of the refractive index inside the nonlinear random medium.

Maintenance of the coherence of a light wave on weak scattering

Yi Ding, Daomu Zhao

In the light of the perspective of statistical similarity, we examine the maintenance of the second-order coherence of a light wave on weak scattering from a random medium. Some new and nontrivial results relating to properties of the scattered field which remains the second-order coherence of the incident field are presented. By assuming that the scattered field remains the second-order coherence, we can show that all of higher order correlation functions of Fourier component of the scattering potential can reduce to the like-factorization forms with a series of constant coefficients. These coefficients furnish an efficient and direct way to describe the higher order coherence property of the scattered field. We also show that the combination of the maintenance of second- and fourth-order coherence implies the scattered field coherence to all orders. Finally, the structure feature of the random medium is also discussed when the coherence of the incident field is retained up to 2nth order, in particular, in the case of the second-order coherence. Our theory is an important contribution for understanding of spatially fully coherent scattered fields, and also gives a general and new method to discuss the variation of the coherence of the scattered field.

Correlation function of speckle in reflection from photonic paint

A. A. Burkov, A. Yu. Zyuzin

We consider the reflection of light from a disordered amplifying medium and calculate the speckle correlation function near the lasing threshold. We also consider the random amplifier-random generator phase diagram on the plane of amplification length versus radiation mean free path.

Photon Statistics and Coherence in Light Emission from a Random Laser

Lucia Florescu, Sajeev John

We derive the photon number probability distribution of light emitted from a random multiple-light-scattering medium with gain, using a generalized master equation. Our model treats the random laser medium as a collection of low quality-factor cavities, coupled by random photon diffusion. We demonstrate that, with stronger scattering, the pumping threshold for the transition from chaotic to isotropic coherent light emission decreases and the local second order coherence, above threshold, increases.

Interference properties of coherent photons selectively reflected from resonance media

B. A. Veklenko

It is shown that, according to the quantum theory of light, the spatial period of an interference pattern formed by light incident on a medium and reflected from it is determined both by the wavelength of light and the number of coherent photons in a scattered mode. The scattered signal is assumed arbitrarily weak.

Direct Observation of the Second-Order Coherence of Parametrically Generated Light

Izo I. Abram, Rama K. Raj, J. L. Oudar +1 more

The second-harmonic spectrum of the output of an optical parametric emitter at degeneracy exhibits a narrow peak, much sharper than the spectrum of the parametric light. This peak is a manifestation of the second-order correlations in parametric light. Alternatively, it can be considered as resulting from the recombination of simultaneously generated (twin) wave packets. The twin-wave-packet correlation time is shown to be limited by the first-order coherence time of parametric light.
