Abstract

We numerically investigate the ground state, the Raman-driving dynamics, and the nonlinear excitations of a realized spin-orbit-coupled Bose–Einstein condensate in a 1D harmonic trap. Depending on the Raman coupling and the interatomic interactions, three ground-state phases are identified: stripe, plane wave, and zero-momentum phases. A narrow parameter regime with coexistence of stripe and zero-momentum or plane wave phases in real space is found. Several sweeps progress across different phases by driving the Raman coupling linearly in time are simulated and the nonequilibrium dynamics of the system in these sweeps are studied. We find several kinds of nonlinear excitations, with the particular dark solitons excited in the sweep from the stripe phase to the plane wave or zero-momentum phase within the trap. Moreover, the number and the stability of the dark solitons can be controlled in the driving, which provides a direct and easy way to generate dark solitons and study their dynamics and interaction properties.

Stability and dynamics of dark–bright solitons in spin–orbit and Rabi-coupled binary Bose–Einstein condensates

Abstract We investigate the stability and nonlinear dynamics of dark–bright (DB) solitons in a one-dimensional binary Bose–Einstein condensate subjected to synthetic spin–orbit(SO) and Rabi couplings. In the absence of SO coupling, we map the coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations onto the integrable Manakov model to obtain exact DB soliton solutions, providing a rigorous theoretical benchmark. We demonstrate that finite SO coupling breaks integrability by inducing spin-dependent phase gradients that drive component-wise spatial separation and intrinsic density oscillations. By contrast, coherent Rabi driving enforces phase locking between spin components and supports robust breather-like excitations. Furthermore, we derive analytical continuity relations for mass and spin current densities, mapping the internal spin dynamics onto an internal Josephson-junction framework in which the gauge field acts as a continuous spatial momentum bias. Using imaginary-time propagation together with Bogoliubov–de Gennes analysis, we systematically characterise ground-state phases and excitation spectra for both symmetric and asymmetric interaction regimes in homogeneous and harmonically trapped systems. Real-time simulations further demonstrate that synthetic gauge fields and interaction quenches drive the system far from equilibrium, triggering modulational-instability-induced multi-soliton fragmentation, breathing stripe patterns, and non-equilibrium transport. Our results highlight the interplay of synthetic gauge fields, external confinement, and interaction engineering as powerful tools for controlling the stability and internal dynamics of multicomponent quantum fluids.

Two types of ground-state bright solitons in a coupled harmonically trapped pseudo-spin polarization Bose–Einstein condensate

T.F. Xu

We study two types of bright solitons in an attractive Bose–Einstein condensate with a spin–orbit interaction. By solving the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with the variational method and the imaginary time evolution method, fundamental properties of solitons are carefully investigated in different parameter regimes. It is shown that the detuning between the Raman beam and energy states of the atoms dominates the ground state type and spin polarization strength. The soliton dynamics is also studied for various moving velocities for zero and nonzero detuning cases. We find that the shape of individual component solitons can be maintained when the moving speed of solitons is low and the detuning is small in the coupled harmonically trapped pseudo-spin polarization Bose–Einstein condensate.

Solitons and Josephson-type oscillations in Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit coupling and time-varying Raman frequency

F. Kh. Abdullaev, Marijana Brtka, A. Gammal +1 more

The existence and dynamics of solitons in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and attractive two-body interactions are described for two coupled atomic pseudospin components with slowly and rapidly varying time-dependent Raman frequency. By varying the Raman frequency linearly in time, it was shown that ordinary nonlinear Schr\"odinger-type bright solitons can be converted to striped bright solitons, and vice versa. The internal Josephson oscillations between atom number of the coupled soliton components and the corresponding center-of-mass motion are studied for different parameter configurations. In this case, a mechanism to control the soliton parameters is proposed by considering parametric resonances, which can emerge when using time-varying Raman frequencies. Full-numerical simulations confirm variational analysis predictions when applied to the region where regular solitons are expected. In the limit of high frequencies, the system is described by a time-averaged Gross-Pitaevskii formalism with renormalized nonlinear and SOC parameters and modified phase-dependent nonlinearities. By comparing full-numerical simulations with averaged results, we have also studied the lower limits for the frequency of Raman oscillations in order to obtain stable soliton solutions.

Matter-wave dark solitons and their excitation spectra in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Vassos Achilleos, Jan Stockhofe, P. G. Kevrekidis +2 more

We present three types of dark solitons in quasi–one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates. Among these families, two are always stable, while the third one is only stable sufficiently close to the linear regime. The solitons' excitation spectra reveal the potential existence of a second anomalous mode. While the first such mode describes the soliton oscillatory motion in a parabolic trap, the second, when present, reflects the double-well structure of the underlying single-particle spectrum. This novel mode results in moving density stripes in the vicinity of the soliton core, or in an out-of-phase oscillation of the constituent components, with little effect on the nearly stationary striped total density of the composite soliton.

Solitons in spin-orbit-coupled spin-2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Nian-Sheng Wan, Yue Li, Ju-Kui Xue

We investigate the different types of matter-wave solitons in spin-orbit-coupled spin-2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. Using mean-field theory and adopting the multiscale perturbation method, the original five-component Gross-Pitaevskii spin-orbit-coupled spin-2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate model can be reduced to a single effective nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which allows us to find analytical soliton solutions of this system. In this way, for different regimes of the spin-orbit coupling, Raman coupling, and interatomic interactions, we find approximate bright and dark soliton solutions. Particularly, the type of solitons depends on the dispersion properties of the system. When the lowest-energy band has a single-well structure, we find there only exist positive mass bright or dark solitons due to the dispersion coefficient of effective nonlinear Shrödinger equation always positive. However, when the lowest-energy band has a double-well structure, there will appear positive (negative) mass bright or dark solitons because the sign of the dispersion coefficient can be positive (negative) under different momentum. We employ direct numerical simulation of the original five-component Gross-Pitaevskii equations to confirm the analytical results.

Nonlinear modes coupling of trapped spin–orbit coupled spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates

Jie Wang, Jun-Cheng Liang, Zi-Fa Yu +3 more

We study analytically and numerically the nonlinear collective dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional spin–orbit coupled spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates trapped in harmonic potential. The ground state of the system is determined by minimizing the Lagrange density, and the coupled equations of motions for the center-of-mass coordinate of the condensate and its width are derived. Then, two low energy excitation modes in breathing dynamics and dipole dynamics are obtained analytically, and the mechanism of exciting the anharmonic collective dynamics is revealed explicitly. The coupling among spin–orbit coupling, Raman coupling and spin-dependent interaction results in multiple external collective modes, which leads to the anharmonic collective dynamics. The cooperative effect of spin momentum locking and spin-dependent interaction results in coupling of dipolar and breathing dynamics, which strongly depends on spin-dependent interaction and behaves distinct characters in different phases. Interestingly, in the absence of spin-dependent interaction, the breathing dynamics is decoupled from spin dynamics and the breathing dynamics is harmonic. Our results provide theoretical evidence for deep understanding of the ground sate phase transition and the nonlinear collective dynamics of the system.
