Abstract

We present a high-quality bias-free quantum random number generator (QRNG) using photon arrival time selectively, in accordance with the number of photon detection events within a sampling time interval in attenuated light. It is well shown in both theoretical analysis and experimental verification that this random number production method eliminates both bias and correlation perfectly without more postprocessing and that the random number can clearly pass the standard randomness tests. We fulfill theoretical analysis and experimental verification of the method whose rate can reach up to 45 Mb/s.

High speed optical quantum random number generation

We present a fully integrated, ready-for-use quantum random number generator (QRNG) whose stochastic model is based on the randomness of detecting single photons in attenuated light. We show that often annoying deadtime effects associated with photomultiplier tubes (PMT) can be utilized to avoid postprocessing for bias or correlations. The random numbers directly delivered to a PC, generated at a rate of up to 50 Mbit/s, clearly pass all tests relevant for (physical) random number generators.

A high speed, postprocessing free, quantum random number generator

J. F. Dynes, Zhiliang L. Yuan, A. W. Sharpe +1 more

A quantum random number generator (QRNG) based on gated single photon detection of an In–GaAs photodiode at gigahertz frequency is demonstrated. Owing to the extremely long coherence time of each photon, each photons’ wave function extends over many gating cycles of the photodiode. The collapse of the photon wave function on random gating cycles as well as photon random arrival time detection events are used to generate sequences of random bits at a rate of 4.01Mbit∕s. Importantly, the random outputs are intrinsically biasfree and require no postprocessing procedure to pass random number statistical tests, making this QRNG an extremely simple device.

High-speed quantum-random number generation by continuous measurement of arrival time of photons

Qiurong Yan, Baosheng Zhao, Hua Zhang +2 more

We demonstrate a novel high speed and multi-bit optical quantum random number generator by continuously measuring arrival time of photons with a common starting point. To obtain the unbiased and post-processing free random bits, the measured photon arrival time is converted into the sum of integral multiple of a fixed period and a phase time. Theoretical and experimental results show that the phase time is an independent and uniform random variable. A random bit extraction method by encoding the phase time is proposed. An experimental setup has been built and the unbiased random bit generation rate could reach 128 Mb/s, with random bit generation efficiency of 8 bits per detected photon. The random numbers passed all tests in the statistical test suite.

Experimental demonstration of high-entropy time of arrival based optical QRNG qualifying stringent statistical tests

We report a demonstration of a high-entropy optical quantum random number generator (QRNG) based on photon arrival time. We have implemented the scheme with high-speed and high-precision electronics with a time resolution of 1 ps generating 115 Mbps raw data. The random bit generation efficiency is 8 bits per detection. The experimental data is quite consistent with theoretical estimation showing minimum bias. We apply a real-time information-theoretic randomness extractor to generate a final data rate of 109 Mbps. The randomness is rigorously evaluated against well-known statistical test suites of NIST, ENT, Diehard, TU-01 and Dieharder.

Low-bias high-speed quantum random number generator via shaped optical pulses

Michael A. Wayne, Paul G. Kwiat

We present an optical quantum random number generator (QRNG) based on the digitized time interval between random photon arrivals. By tailoring the photon flux of the laser diode, the statistics of the waiting-time distribution are altered to approximate the ideal, uniform case. This greatly reduces the need for post-processing, and enables fast, secure quantum random number generation at rates exceeding 110 Mbit/s.

Practical and fast quantum random number generation based on photon arrival time relative to external reference

You-Qi Nie, Hong-Fei Zhang, Zhen Zhang +4 more

We present a practical high-speed quantum random number generator, where the timing of single-photon detection relative to an external time reference is measured as the raw data. The bias of the raw data can be substantially reduced compared with the previous realizations. The raw random bit rate of our generator can reach 109 Mbps. We develop a model for the generator and evaluate the min-entropy of the raw data. Toeplitz matrix hashing is applied for randomness extraction, after which the final random bits are able to pass the standard randomness tests.
