Abstract

A quantum random number generator (QRNG) based on gated single photon detection of an In–GaAs photodiode at gigahertz frequency is demonstrated. Owing to the extremely long coherence time of each photon, each photons’ wave function extends over many gating cycles of the photodiode. The collapse of the photon wave function on random gating cycles as well as photon random arrival time detection events are used to generate sequences of random bits at a rate of 4.01Mbit∕s. Importantly, the random outputs are intrinsically biasfree and require no postprocessing procedure to pass random number statistical tests, making this QRNG an extremely simple device.

A Bias-Free Quantum Random Number Generation Using Photon Arrival Time Selectively

We present a high-quality bias-free quantum random number generator (QRNG) using photon arrival time selectively, in accordance with the number of photon detection events within a sampling time interval in attenuated light. It is well shown in both theoretical analysis and experimental verification that this random number production method eliminates both bias and correlation perfectly without more postprocessing and that the random number can clearly pass the standard randomness tests. We fulfill theoretical analysis and experimental verification of the method whose rate can reach up to 45 Mb/s.

A Simple and Low-Cost Quantum Random Number Generator Based on Coherent States

Phuc-La Huu, Kien-Vu Van

High-speed QRNG devices typically involve high costs and complex designs, limiting their accessibility. However, in many practical applications, simpler, low-cost QRNG devices are preferred due to their ability to provide easily deployable, cost-effective solutions that meet basic randomness requirements in environments where speed and complexity are not critical. This paper presents a quantum random number generator (QRNG) that uses the uncertainty in the number of photons in a stimulated emission state as a quantum noise source. This design allows for real-time random number generation using low-cost components. The final random bit sequences generated by our QRNG successfully pass all NIST SP800-22 and AIS31 statistical tests with the post-processing stage, demonstrating its reliability and practicality.

Efficient quantum random number generation via simultaneously detecting photons in temporal and spatial dimensions

Bingkun Wang, Jianyong Hu, Xingjian Li +11 more

Quantum random number generators (QRNGs) produce true random numbers with significant applications in quantum communication and numerical computation, where high-rate random number generation is critical. Photon detection-based quantum random-number generation methods have been widely studied. However, the generation rate is constrained by the count rate of single-photon detectors. This study proposes an efficient method that enhances random number generation by simultaneously detecting photons in temporal and spatial dimensions. We achieved simultaneous detection of photon arrival time and spatial position by employing a laboratory-developed 5 × 5 single-photon detector array and a high-saturation count rate multichannel time-to-digital converter. The maximum efficiency of the method was 21.1 bits per event and it maintained a consistent efficiency of 17.6 bits per event while achieving a random number generation rate of 2.1 Gbps. The proposed QRNG approach offers a promising pathway for significantly increasing random number generation rates, benefiting applications that require secure and high-speed random number sequences.

High speed optical quantum random number generation

We present a fully integrated, ready-for-use quantum random number generator (QRNG) whose stochastic model is based on the randomness of detecting single photons in attenuated light. We show that often annoying deadtime effects associated with photomultiplier tubes (PMT) can be utilized to avoid postprocessing for bias or correlations. The random numbers directly delivered to a PC, generated at a rate of up to 50 Mbit/s, clearly pass all tests relevant for (physical) random number generators.

Post-processing Free Quantum Random Number Generator Based on Avalanche Photodiode Array

Yang Li, Sheng‐Kai Liao, Futian Liang +3 more

Quantum random number generators adopting single photon detection have been restricted due to the non-negligible dead time of avalanche photodiodes (APDs). We propose a new approach based on an APD array to improve the generation rate of random numbers significantly. This method compares the detectors' responses to consecutive optical pulses and generates the random sequence. We implement a demonstration experiment to show its simplicity, compactness and scalability. The generated numbers are proved to be unbiased, post-processing free, ready to use, and their randomness is verified by using the national institute of standard technology statistical test suite. The random bit generation efficiency is as high as 32.8% and the potential generation rate adopting the 32 × 32 APD array is up to tens of Gbits/s.

Efficient multidimensional quantum random number generator using a CMOS SPAD array

Xingjian Li, Jianyong Hu, Bingkun Wang +9 more

Quantum random number generators (QRNGs) can generate true random numbers and have significant applications in quantum communication, numerical computation, and model simulation. However, the rate of random number generation based on photon detection is constrained by the maximum count rate of a single-photon detector. Therefore, improving the efficiency of random number generation for individual photon detection events becomes an optional way to increase the rate of random number generation. In this paper, multidimensional photon detection is implemented to enhance single-photon detection events, thereby providing a new, to the best of our knowledge, technical development strategy for high-speed random number generators. The temporal and spatial coherence of coherent-state photons is utilized as a valuable quantum resource, enabling us to achieve the simultaneous extraction of time-space measurement collapsed randomness for single-photon detection events using a chip-scale CMOS-integrated single-photon avalanche diode array. The efficiency of random number generation for single-photon detection events is effectively improved. In our experiments, up to 20 bits can be extracted from an individual photon detection event, and the rate of random number generation reaches up to 2.067 Gbps.
