Overcomplete Bases for S = 1 Spin Liquids

Abstract

For a $S=1$ system with even number of spins, the product states of two-body singlets, called the singlet pair states (SPSs), are overcomplete bases for the Hilbert space of many-body singlets. If the system contains odd number of spins, a singlet state can be decomposed as a superposition of all of the following configurations, in each configuration three of the spins form a three-body singlet and the remaining form two-body singlet pairs. This indicates that a $S=1$ spin liquid is especially a resonating-valence bond state. Although this conclusion is no longer valid for $SO(3)$ symmetric $S>1$ systems, it can be generalized to an integer spin-$S$ system if it has an enlarged $SO(2S+1)$ symmetry. Similar results can also be obtained for systems with $SU(n)$ symmetry.

Generalized valence bond state and solvable models for spin- 12 systems with orbital degeneracy

Shun-Qing Shen

A spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ system with double orbital degeneracy may possess SU(4) symmetry. According to the group theory a global SU(4) singlet state can be expressed as a linear combination of all possible configurations consisting of four-site SU(4) singlets. Following Andersion's idea for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ system, we propose that the ground state for the antiferromagnetic SU(4) model is an SU(4)-resonating valence-bond (RVB) state. A short-range SU(4)-RVB state is a spin and orbital liquid, and its elementary excitations has an energy gap. We construct a series of solvable models that ground states are short-range SU(4)-RVB states. The results are generalized to the antiferromagnetic SU(N) models.

A generalized valence bond basis for the half-filled Hubbard model

Christopher Graves

I present a non-orthogonal and overcomplete set of states that spans the S_tot=0 Hilbert subspace for a fermionic system with four possible spin configurations per site, on a half-filled lattice with an even number of sites. This set consists of possible pairing of the spins into three bond types: singlet bonds and positive and negative charge bonds. Although I present the specific case for the half-filled Hubbard model in one-dimension, these sets of states can be trivially extended to higher dimensions. The overlap of these generalized valence bond states form closed loops with properties that are related to operator expectation values in this basis. I verify the correctness of this basis by solving the model via exact diagonalization and comparing with known results. There is evidence of structure in the ground state that may be useful to simulations using variational wave functions.

SU(4) topological resonating valence bond spin liquid on the square lattice

Olivier Gauthé, Sylvain Capponi, Didier Poilblanc

We generalize the construction of the spin-1/2 SU(2) resonating valence bond (RVB) state to the case of the self-conjugate $\mathbf{6}$ representation of SU(4). As for the case of SU(2) [J.-Y. Chen and D. Poilblanc, Phys. Rev. B 97, 161107(R) (2018)], we use the projected entangled pair state (PEPS) formalism to derive a simple (two-dimensional) family of generalized SU(4) RVB states on the square lattice. We show that, when longer-range SU(4)-singlet bonds are included, a local gauge symmetry is broken down from U(1) to ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$, leading to the emergence of a short-range spin liquid. Evidence for the topological nature of this spin liquid is provided by the investigation of the Renyi entanglement entropy of infinitely long cylinders and of the modular matrices. Relevance to microscopic models and experiments of ultracold atoms is discussed.

Resonating singlet valence plaquettes

Sergey Pankov, Roderich Moessner, Shivaji L. Sondhi

We consider the simplest generalizations of the valence bond physics of SU(2) singlets to $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ singlets that comprise objects with $N$ sites---these are $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ singlet plaquettes with $N=3$ and $N=4$ in three spatial dimensions. Specifically, we search for a quantum mechanical liquid of such objects---a resonating singlet valence plaquette phase that generalizes the celebrated resonating valence bond phase for SU(2) spins. We extend the Rokhsar-Kivelson construction [Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 2376 (1988)] of the quantum dimer model to the simplest SU(4) model for valence plaquette dynamics on a cubic lattice. The phase diagram of the resulting quantum plaquette model is analyzed both analytically and numerically. We find that the ground state is solid everywhere, including at the Rokhsar-Kivelson point where the ground state is an equal amplitude sum. By contrast, the equal amplitude sum of SU(3) singlet triangular plaquettes on the face-centered cubic lattice is liquid and is thus a candidate for describing a resonating single valence plaquette phase, given a suitably defined local Hamiltonian.

Projective symmetry groups beyond spin-$1/2$: Classifying integer-spin quantum spin liquids

Atanu Maity, Chunxiao Liu, Rhine Samajdar +1 more

Wen's projective symmetry group (PSG), introduced a quarter of a century ago, reduced the classification of symmetric quantum spin liquids to an algebraic problem and has guided the study of spin-$1/2$ models and materials ever since. Many current candidate materials and quantum simulators, however, have spin-$1$ or larger moments, and no comparable classification exists for them. We formulate the PSG for fermionic partons of arbitrary spin $S$. Integer and half-odd-integer spins already differ in their gauge structure. Half-odd-integer spins give the familiar $\mathrm{SU}(2)$, $\mathrm{U}(1)$, and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant gauge groups, while integer spins give a different hierarchy that includes $\mathrm{U}(1)\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$; the latter has no spin-$1/2$ counterpart. Three lattice-independent results follow for integer spin. Singlet pairing of the partons is odd under site exchange. A lattice symmetry can exchange the particle and hole representations of the local constraint, which forces symmetry-related sites into opposite constraint sectors. And a time-reversal-symmetric $\mathrm{U}(1)$ state with the same constraint on every site can be gapped only if the number of sites per unit cell is a multiple of $2S+1$. We apply the formalism to the spin-$1$ diamond lattice, realized in frustrated A-site spinels, and find ten fully symmetric Ansätze up to second neighbors. In the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model at the mean-field level, the ground state depends on how the constraint is imposed. With the particle and hole representations, the lowest states are fully gapped $\mathrm{U}(1)$ states whose two sublattices sit in opposite constraint sectors, and one of them is gauge equivalent to a paired Ansatz. The classification provides a starting point for integer-spin quantum spin liquids on other lattices and in other materials.

Striped critical spin liquid in a spin-orbital entangled RVB state in a projected entangled-pair state representation

Piotr Czarnik, Jacek Dziarmaga

We introduce a spin-orbital entangled (SOE) resonating valence bond (RVB) state on a square lattice of spins $\frac{1}{2}$ and orbitals represented by pseudospins $\frac{1}{2}$. Like the standard RVB state, it is a superposition of nearest-neighbor hard-core coverings of the lattice by spin singlets, but adjacent singlets are favored to have perpendicular orientations and, more importantly, an orientation of each singlet is entangled with orbitals state on its two lattice sites. The SOE-RVB state can be represented by a projected entangled pair state (PEPS) with a bond dimension $D=4$. This representation helps to reveal that the state is a superposition of striped coverings conserving a topological quantum number. The stripes are a critical quantum spin liquid. We propose a spin-orbital Hamiltonian supporting a SOE-RVB ground state.
