Abstract

The Potts model plays an essential role in classical statistical mechanics, illustrating many fundamental phenomena. One example is the existence of partially long-range-ordered states, in which some degrees of freedom remain disordered. This situation may arise from frustration of the interactions, but also from an irregular but unfrustrated lattice structure. We study partial long-range order in a range of antiferromagnetic $q$-state Potts models on different two-dimensional lattices and for all relevant values of $q$. We exploit the power of tensor-based numerical methods to evaluate the partition function of these models and hence to extract the key thermodynamic properties (entropy, specific heat, magnetization, and susceptibility) giving deep insight into the phase transitions and ordered states of each system. Our calculations reveal a range of phenomena related to partial ordering, including different types of entropy-driven phase transition, the role of lattice irregularity, very large values of the critical ${q}_{c}$, and double phase transitions.

Partial Order and Finite-Temperature Phase Transitions in Potts Models on Irregular Lattices

Qiaoni Chen, Mingpu Qin, Jialin Chen +4 more

We evaluate the thermodynamic properties of the 4-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the Union-Jack lattice using tensor-based numerical methods. We present strong evidence for a previously unknown, "entropy-driven," finite-temperature phase transition to a partially ordered state. From the thermodynamics of Potts models on the diced and centered diced lattices, we propose that finite-temperature transitions and partially ordered states are ubiquitous on irregular lattices.

Partial Order in Potts Models on the Generalized Decorated Square Lattice

Mingpu Qin, Jing Chen, Qiaoni Chen +5 more

We explore the Potts model on the generalized decorated square lattice, with both nearest (J 1 ) and next-nearest (J 2 ) neighbor interactions. Using the tensor renormalization-group method augmented by higher order singular value decompositions, we calculate the spontaneous magnetization of the Potts model with q = 2, 3, and 4. The results for q = 2 allow us to benchmark our numerics using the exact solution. For q = 3, we find a highly degenerate ground state with partial order on a single sublattice, but with vanishing entropy per site, and we obtain the phase diagram as a function of the ratio J 2 /J 1 . There is no finite-temperature transition for the q = 4 case when J 1 = J 2 , whereas the magnetic susceptibility diverges as the temperature goes to zero, showing that the model is critical at T = 0.

Analytic Properties of Potts and Ising Model Partition Functions and the Relationship between Analytic Properties and Phase Transitions in Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics

Siti Fatimah Zakaria

The Ising and $Q$-state Potts models are statistical mechanical models of spins interaction on crystal lattices. \nWe study the partition functions on a range of lattices, particularly two- and three-dimensional cases. The study aims to investigate cooperative phenomena $-$ how higher level structure is affected by the detailed activity of a very large number of lower level structures. \nWe investigate the analytic properties of the partition functions and their relationship to physical observables in equilibrium near phase transition. \nOur study is focussed on describing the partition function and the distribution of zeros of the partition function in the complex-temperature plane close to phase transitions. \nHere we first consider the solved case of the Ising model on square lattice as a benchmark for checking our method of computation and analysis. \nThe partition function is computed using a transfer matrix approach and the zeros are found numerically by Newton-Raphson method. \nWe extend the study of $Q$-state Potts models to a more general case called the $Z_Q$-symmetric model. \nWe evidence the existence of multiple phase transitions for this model in case $Q=5,6,$ and discuss the possible connection to different stages of disordered state. \nGiven sufficient and efficient coding and computing resources, we extend many previously studied cases to larger lattice sizes. \nOur analysis of zeros distribution close to phase transition point is based on a certain power law relation which leads to critical exponent of physical observable. \nWe evidence for example, that our method can be used to give numerical estimates of the specific heat critical exponent $\\alpha$.

Phase Transitions and Critical Phenomena in the 2D Potts Impurity Model on a Square Lattice

Akai Kurbanovich Murtazaev, Albert Babaevich Babaev, G. Ya. Ataeva +1 more

Abstract Phase transitions and critical behavior in the 2D dilute Potts model with number q = 4 of spin states on a square lattice are investigated by computer simulation. Systems with linear sizes L × L = N, l = 10–160 with spin concentrations p = 1.00, 0.95, 0.80 are considered. It is shown that the introduction of magnetic impurities plays a stabilizing role in the realization of a second-order phase transition in the Potts model under investigation. Based on the finite-size scaling theory, statistical critical indices of heat capacity α, susceptibility γ, magnetization β, and correlation radius index ν are calculated for the range of concentrations p considered here.

Disorder-induced rounding of the phase transition in the large- q -state Potts model

Maria Teresa Mercaldo, J C Anglès d'Auriac, Ferenc Iglói

The phase transition in the q -state Potts model with homogeneous ferromagnetic couplings is strongly first order for large q, while it is rounded in the presence of quenched disorder. Here we study this phenomenon on different two-dimensional lattices by using the fact that the partition function of the model is dominated by a single diagram of the high-temperature expansion, which is calculated by an efficient combinatorial optimization algorithm. For a given finite sample with discrete randomness the free energy is a piecewise linear function of the temperature, which is rounded after averaging, however, the discontinuity of the internal energy at the transition point (i.e., the latent heat) stays finite even in the thermodynamic limit. For a continuous disorder, instead, the latent heat vanishes. At the phase transition point the dominant diagram percolates and the total magnetic moment is related to the size of the percolating cluster. Its fractal dimension is found d(f) = ( 5 + square root of 5)/4 and it is independent of the type of the lattice and the form of disorder. We argue that the critical behavior is exclusively determined by disorder and the corresponding fixed point is the isotropic version of the so-called infinite randomness fixed point, which is realized in random quantum spin chains. From this mapping we conjecture the values of the critical exponents as beta=2- d(f), beta(s) =1/2, and nu=1.

Phase transitions in the two-dimensional ferro- and antiferromagnetic potts models on a triangular lattice

Akai Kurbanovich Murtazaev, Albert Babaevich Babaev

The phase transitions in the two-dimensional ferro- and antiferromagnetic Potts models with q = 3 states of spin on a triangular lattice are studied using cluster algorithms and the classical Monte Carlo method. Systems with linear sizes L = 20–120 are considered. The method of fourth-order Binder cumulants and histogram analysis are used to discover that a second-order phase transition occurs in the ferromagnetic Potts model and a first-order phase transition takes place in the antiferromagnetic Potts model. The static critical indices of heat capacity (α), magnetic susceptibility (γ), magnetization (β), and correlation radius index (ν) are calculated for the ferromagnetic Potts model using the finite-size scaling theory.
