Abstract

We present a modified scheme for detection of the magneto-optical rotation (MOR) effect, where a linearly polarized laser field is interacting with cold $^{87}$Rb atoms in an integrating sphere. The rotation angle of the probe beam's polarization plane is detected in the experiment. The results indicate that the biased magnetic field, the probe light intensity and detuning, and the cold atoms' temperature are key parameters for the MOR effect. This scheme may improve the contrast of the rotation signal and provide an useful approach for high contrast cold atom clocks and magnetometers.

The magneto-optical effect of cold atoms in an integrating sphere for atomic clock and optical magnetometer

We investigate the magneto-optical effect of cold atoms in an integrating sphere both experimentally and theoretically. The dependence of magneto-optical rotation angle on the biased magnetic field, the probe light intensity, and the probe light detuning are investigated. The probe light background is blocked and the shot noise is strongly suppressed. This detection scheme may provide a new approach for high contrast cold atom clock and cold atom optical magnetometer.

Observation of Faraday Rotation in Cold Atoms in an Integrating Sphere

Ben-Chang Zheng, Hua-Dong Cheng, Yan-Ling Meng +3 more

The Faraday rotation of weak linearly polarized probe light is observed as it passes through a sample of cold 87 Rb atoms prepared by diffused light in an integrating sphere. The rotation angle of the probe light-polarization as functions of laser intensity, detuning and biased magnetic field is measured. A Ramsey fringe with a linewidth of 35 Hz and contrast up to 92% is demonstrated. This method has potential applications in improving the performance of atomic clocks with cold atoms.

Enhanced nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in cold atoms: A theoretical study

Mohsen Ghaderi Goran Abad, Mitra Valinezhad, Mohammad Mahmoudi

We theoretically investigate magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of a linearly polarized probe field in the four-level N-type cold atoms. By applying a static magnetic field and a weak coupling field, it is shown that the birefringence enhancement is induced in the system. Moreover, we show that the static magnetic field has a major role in switching the dichroism to enhanced birefringence in the system. We also obtain a large intensity for the output field with nearly perpendicular MOR angle by 88 degrees with subnatural width. It is demonstrated that Doppler broadening has a destructive effect on the MOR of the polarization direction of the probe field. The results of our study can be used for selecting narrow band of wavelengths and polarization converter for efficient switching of TM/TE polarization modes in optical communication, the depolarization backscattering lidar, polarization spectroscopy and precision measurements.

Probing vacuum-induced coherence via magneto-optical rotation in molecular systems

Pardeep Kumar, Bimalendu Deb, Shubhrangshu Dasgupta

We investigate theoretically the effects of vacuum-induced coherence (VIC) on magneto-optical rotation (MOR). We carry out a model study to show that VIC in the presence of a control laser and a magnetic field can lead to large enhancement in the rotation of the plane of polarization of a linearly polarized weak laser with vanishing circular dichroism. This effect can be realized in cold molecular gases and may be used as a sensitive probe for VIC. Such a large MOR angle can also be used to detect weak magnetic field with large measurement sensitivity.
