Symmetric coupling of angular momenta, quadratic algebras and discrete polynomials

V Aquilanti, Dimitri Marinelli, A Marzuoli

Eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the volume operator, associated with the symmetric coupling of three SU (2) angular momentum operators, can be analyzed on the basis of a discrete Schrödinger–like equation which provides a semiclassical Hamiltonian picture of the evolution of a 'quantum of space', as shown by the authors in [1]. Emphasis is given here to the formalization in terms of a quadratic symmetry algebra and its automorphism group. This view is related to the Askey scheme, the hierarchical structure which includes all hypergeometric polynomials of one (discrete or continuous) variable. Key tool for this comparative analysis is the duality operation defined on the generators of the quadratic algebra and suitably extended to the various families of overlap functions (generalized recoupling coefficients). These families, recognized as lying at the top level of the Askey scheme, are classified and a few limiting cases are addressed.

Spin–orbit coupling and the conservation of angular momentum

V Hnizdo

In nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, the total (i.e. orbital plus spin) angular momentum of a charged particle with spin that moves in a Coulomb plus spin–orbit-coupling potential is conserved. In a classical nonrelativistic treatment of this problem, in which the Lagrange equations determine the orbital motion and the Thomas equation yields the rate of change of the spin, the particle's total angular momentum in which the orbital angular momentum is defined in terms of the kinetic momentum is generally not conserved. However, a generalized total angular momentum, in which the orbital part is defined in terms of the canonical momentum, is conserved. This illustrates the fact that the quantum-mechanical operator of momentum corresponds to the canonical momentum of classical mechanics.

Angular Momentum

Hans-Peter Eckle

Abstract In order to prepare for the discussion of quantum many-particle Hamiltonians, for example the Heisenberg quantum spin chain Hamiltonian, this chapter examines the concept of angular momentum in quantum mechanics, especially the coupling of spin-2 operators for several quantum spins. It begins with the general theory of angular momentum for a single quantum particle, especially for a single spin-1, described by Pauli spin matrices, and then extends to the theory of angular momentum for several particles, again especially for several spins1.
