Abstract

A three-dimensional Kitaev model on a hyperhoneycomb lattice is investigated numerically at finite temperature. The Kitaev model is one of the solvable quantum spin models, where the ground state is given by gapped and gapless spin liquids, depending on the anisotropy of the interactions. This model can be rewritten as a free Majorana fermion system coupled with Z 2 variables. The density of states of Majorana fermions shows an excitation gap in the gapped region, while it is semimetallic in the gapless region reflecting the Dirac node. Performing the Monte Carlo simulation, we calculate the temperature dependence of the Majorana spectra. We find that the semimetallic dip is filled as temperature increases in the gapless region, but surprisingly, the spectrum develops an excitation gap in the region near the gapless-gapped boundary. Such changes of the low-energy spectrum appear sharply at the transition temperature from the spin liquid to the paramagnetic state. The results indicate that thermal fluctuations of the Z 2 fields significantly influence the low-energy state of Majorana fermions, especially in the spin liquid formation.

Spin correlation and Majorana spectrum in chiral spin liquids in a decorated-honeycomb Kitaev model

Joji Nasu, Yukitoshi Motome

Temperature evolution of the spin correlation and excitation spectrum is investigated for the Kitaev model defined on a decorated honeycomb lattice by using the quantum Monte Carlo simulation in the Majorana fermion representation. The ground state of this quantum spin model is given by two kinds of chiral spin liquids: one is topologically trivial with Abelian anyon excitations, and the other is topologically nontrivial with non-Abelian anyon excitations. While lowering temperature, the model exhibits several crossovers in the paramagnetic state, which originate from the fractionalization of quantum spins into Majorana fermions, in addition to a phase transition associated with time reversal symmetry breaking. We show that the spin correlation develops around the crossover temperatures, whereas it shows a slight change at the critical temperature, as in other Kitaev-type models. We also calculate the excitation spectrum in terms of Majorana fermions, and find that the excitation gap in the non-Abelian phase is fragile against thermal fluctuations of the Z 2 fluxes, while that in the Abelian phase remains open.

Gapless excitations in Kitaev materials with defects

Lucas R. D. Freitas

A quantum spin liquid is a magnetic phase of matter that is remarkable for its ground state long-range entanglement and fractional excitations. A quantum spin liquid appears in the well-known Kitaev honeycomb spin-half model. In a magnetic field, there is a phase transition to a topological phase with an energy gap in the bulk and chiral Majorana fermions at the edge. However, recent nuclear magnetic resonance experiments suggest excitations without a gap in this phase, signalled by the cubic temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate at low temperatures. In this work, I propose a mechanism to account for this experimental result. I use the localization of chiral Majorana modes in defects to explain the presence of gapless modes in the bulk. Treating the weak interaction between the chiral modes in the defects within a mean-field approximation, I find that these modes remain gapless when the interaction is below a critical value that depends on the magnetic field strength. I used the effective low-energy theory to calculate the spin-lattice relaxation rate and found a behavior that agrees with the experimental result.

Majorana-fermion mean field theories of Kitaev quantum spin liquids

Shahnam Ghanbari Saheli, Jennifer Shu-Jen Lin, Huanzhi Hu +1 more

We determine the phase diagrams of anisotropic Kitaev-Heisenberg models on the honeycomb lattice using parton mean-field theories based on different Majorana fermion representations of the S=1/2 spin operators. First, we use a two-dimensional Jordan-Wigner transformation (JWT) involving a semi-infinite snake string operator. To ensure that the fermionized Hamiltonian remains local, we consider the limit of extreme Ising exchange anisotropy in the Heisenberg sector. Second, we use the conventional Kitaev representation in terms of four Majorana fermions subject to local constraints, which we enforce through Lagrange multipliers. For both representations, we self-consistently decouple the interaction terms in the bond and magnetization channels and determine the phase diagrams as a function of the anisotropy of the Kitaev couplings and the relative strength of the Ising exchange. While both mean-field theories produce identical phase boundaries for the topological phase transition between the gapless and gapped Kitaev quantum spin liquids, the JWT fails to correctly describe the magnetic instability and finite-temperature behavior. Our results show that the magnetic phase transition is first order at low temperatures but becomes continuous above a certain temperature. At this energy scale, we also observe a finite-temperature crossover on the quantum-spin-liquid side, from a fractionalized paramagnet at low temperatures, in which gapped flux excitations are frozen out, to a conventional paramagnet at high temperatures. Temperature evolution of spin dynamics in two- and three-dimensional Kitaev models: Influence of fluctuating Z2 flux

Junki Yoshitake, Joji Nasu, Yukitoshi Motome

The long-sought quantum spin liquid is a quantum-entangled magnetic state leading to the fractionalization of spin degrees of freedom. Quasiparticles emergent from the fractionalization affect not only the ground-state properties but also thermodynamic behavior in a peculiar manner. Here we investigate how the spin dynamics evolves from the high-temperature paramagnet to the quantum spin-liquid ground state, for the Kitaev spin model describing the fractionalization into itinerant matter fermions and localized ${Z}_{2}$ fluxes. Beyond the previous studies [J. Yoshitake, J. Nasu, and Y. Motome, Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 157203 (2016); J. Yoshitake, J. Nasu, Y. Kato, and Y. Motome, Phys. Rev. B 96, 024438 (2017)], in which the mean-field nature of the cluster dynamical mean-field theory prevented us from studying low-temperature properties, we develop a numerical technique by applying the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) method to statistical samples generated by the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method in a Majorana fermion representation. This QMC+CTQMC method is fully unbiased and enables us to investigate the low-temperature spin dynamics dominated by thermally excited ${Z}_{2}$ fluxes, including the unconventional phase transition caused by ${Z}_{2}$ flux loops in three dimensions, which was unreachable by the previous methods. We apply this technique to the Kitaev model in both two and three dimensions. Our results clearly distinguish two cases: while the dynamics changes smoothly through the crossover in the two-dimensional honeycomb case, it exhibits singular behaviors at the phase transition in the three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb case. We show that the low-temperature spin dynamics is a sensitive probe for thermally fluctuating ${Z}_{2}$ fluxes that behave very differently between two and three dimensions.

Three-Dimensional Kitaev Spin Liquids

Kevin M. O'Brien

The formation of quantum spin liquids in frustrated magnets represents an exciting possibility due to the rather exotic features they harbor, including fractionalized excitations and emergent gauge fields. \nUnfortunately, they are notoriously difficult to study as there are often no good analytical methods available and quantum Monte Carlo simulations are hindered by the negative sign problem. \nThe Kitaev honeycomb model is a notable exception of a frustrated quantum model which is exactly solvable and which hosts a number of distinct quantum spin liquid ground states. \nAs such, it allows for a rare opportunity to study the physics of spin liquids with full analytical control. \n \nIn this thesis, we study the fractionalization of spin-1/2 moments into Majorana fermions and an emergent Z2 gauge field in a generalization of the Kitaev honeycomb model to a number of three-dimensional lattices. \nWhile the excitations of the gauge field are always gapped, the fermionic quasiparticles may exhibit a gapless dispersion, forming fully two-dimensional Fermi surfaces, symmetry protected nodal lines, or topological Weyl nodes. \nWe show that one can deduce rather general constraints on the possible gapless excitations by making use of an object called the projective symmetry group. \nIn doing so we provide a scheme for classifying the various gapless Kitaev spin liquids. \nA thorough analysis is carried out for a number of these spin liquids, primarily investigating the stability of the gapless modes and the novel features resulting from their sometimes non-trivial topology, as well as their effects on certain equal-time correlation functions.
