Abstract

Uncovering topologically nontrivial states in nature is an intriguing and important issue in recent years. While most studies are based on the topological band insulators, the topological state in strongly correlated low-dimensional systems has not been extensively explored due to the failure of direct explanation from the topological band insulator theory on such systems and the origin of the topological property is unclear. Here we report the theoretical discovery of strongly correlated topological states in quasi-periodic Heisenberg spin chain systems corresponding to a series of incommensurate magnetization plateaus under the presence of the magnetic field, which are uniquely determined by the quasi-periodic structure of exchange couplings. The topological features of plateau states are demonstrated by the existence of non-trivial spin-flip edge excitations, which can be well characterized by nonzero topological invariants defined in a two-dimensional parameter space. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the topological invariant of the plateau state can be read out from a generalized Streda formula and the spin-flip excitation spectrum exhibits a similar structure of the Hofstadter's butterfly spectrum for the two-dimensional quantum Hall system on a lattice.

Topological nature of magnetization plateaus in periodically modulated quantum spin chains

Haiping Hu, Chen Cheng, Zhihao Xu +2 more

We unveil nontrivial topological properties of zero-temperature magnetization plateau states in periodically modulated quantum spin chains under a uniform magnetic field. As positions of plateaus are uniquely determined by the modulation period of exchange couplings, we find that the topologically nontrivial plateau state can be characterized by a nonzero integer Chern number and has nontrivial edge excitations. Our study clarifies the topological origin of the well-known phenomena of quantized magnetization plateaus in one-dimensional quantum spin systems and relates the plateau state to the correlated topological insulator.

Magnetic End States in a Strongly Interacting One-Dimensional Topological Kondo Insulator

Alejandro M. Lobos, A. Dobry, Victor M. Galitski

Topological Kondo insulators are strongly correlated materials where itinerant electrons hybridize with localized spins, giving rise to a topologically nontrivial band structure. Here, we use nonperturbative bosonization and renormalization-group techniques to study theoretically a one-dimensional topological Kondo insulator, described as a Kondo-Heisenberg model, where the Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain is coupled to a Hubbard chain through a Kondo exchange interaction in the p-wave channel (i.e., a strongly correlated version of the prototypical Tamm-Schockley model). We derive and solve renormalization-group equations at two-loop order in the Kondo parameter, and find that, at half filling, the charge degrees of freedom in the Hubbard chain acquire a Mott gap, even in the case of a noninteracting conduction band (Hubbard parameter U=0). Furthermore, at low enough temperatures, the system maps onto a spin-1/2 ladder with local ferromagnetic interactions along the rungs, effectively locking the spin degrees of freedom into a spin-1 chain with frozen charge degrees of freedom. This structure behaves as a spin-1 Haldane chain, a prototypical interacting topological spin model, and features two magnetic spin-1/2 end states for chains with open boundary conditions. Our analysis allows us to derive an insightful connection between topological Kondo insulators in one spatial dimension and the well-known physics of the Haldane chain, showing that the ground state of the former is qualitatively different from the predictions of the naive mean-field theory.

Fractional topological states in quantum spin chains with periodical modulation

Haiping Hu, Huaiming Guo, Shu Chen

We report the findings of fractional topological states in one-dimensional periodically modulated quantum spin chains with up to third neighbor interactions. By exact numerical studies, we demonstrate the existence of topologically nontrivial degenerate ground states at some specific magnetizations, which can be characterized by the nonzero-integer total Chern numbers of the degenerate ground states and the emergence of nontrivial edge states under open boundary conditions. We find that the low-energy excitations obey bosonic $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ fractional statistics for the spin-$1/2$ system and $\ensuremath{\nu}=1$ non-Abelian statistics for the spin-1 system, respectively. The discovered fractional quantum states provide another route to the theoretical exploration of fractional quantum states in correlated spin systems.

Topological magnon bound states in periodically modulated Heisenberg XXZ chains

Xizhou Qin, Feng Mei, Yongguan Ke +2 more

Strongly interacting topological states in multiparticle quantum systems pose great challenges to both theory and experiment. Recently, bound states of elementary spin waves (magnons) in quantum magnets have been experimentally observed in quantum Heisenberg chains comprising ultracold Bose atoms in optical lattices. Here, we explore a strongly interacting topological state called topological magnon bound state in the quantum Heisenberg chain under cotranslational symmetry. We find that the cotranslational symmetry is the key to the definition of a topological invariant for multiparticle quantum states, which enables us to characterize the topological features of multimagnon excitations. We calculate energy spectra, density distributions, correlations, and Chern numbers of the two-magnon bound states and show the existence of topological protected edge bound states. Our study not only opens a prospect to pursue topological magnon bound states, but also gives insights into the characterization and understanding of strongly interacting topological states.

Gauge theory of strongly-correlated symmetric topological Phases

Peng Ye

In the presence of symmetry-protection, topological invariants of topological phases of matter in free fermion systems, e.g., topological band insulators, can be directly computed via the properties of band structure. Nevertheless, it is usually difficult to extract topological invariants in strongly-correlated topological phases of matter in which band structure is not well-defined. One typical example is the fractional quantum Hall effect whose low-energy physics is governed by Chern-Simons topological gauge theory and Hall conductivity plateaus involve extremely fruitful physics of strong correlation. In this article, we focus on intrinsic topological order (iTO), symmetry-protected topological phases (SPT), and symmetry-enriched topological phases (SET) in boson and spin systems. Through gauge field-theoretical approach, we review some research progress on these topological phases of matter from the aspects of projective construction, low-energy effective theory and topological response theory.
