Phase control of squeezing in fluorescence radiation

Abstract

We study squeezing properties of the fluorescence radiation emitted by a driven $Λ$-type atom in which the metastable lower energy levels are coupled by an additional field. We find that the relative phase of the applied fields can significantly modify the squeezing characteristics of radiation. It is shown that the additional field connecting the lower levels in the system can induce spectral squeezing in a parameter regime for which the squeezing is absent without the additional field. Moreover, the squeezing can be shifted from inner- to outer-sidebands of the spectrum by simply changing the relative phase. A dressed-state description is presented to explain these numerical results. The phase control of squeezing in the total variance of quadrature components is also examined. We show that the squeezing in total variance attains its maximal value when the system reduces to an effective two-level system.

Squeezing in resonance fluorescence via vacuum induced coherences

H. B. Crispin, R Arun

Abstract The squeezing spectrum of the fluorescence field emitted from a four-level atom in J = 1/2 to J = 1/2 configuration driven by two coherent fields is studied. We find that the squeezing properties of the fluorescence radiation are significantly influenced by the presence of vacuum-induced coherence in the atomic system. It is shown that such coherence induces spectral squeezing in phase quadratures of the fluorescence light for both weak and strong driving fields. The dependence of the squeezing spectrum on the relative phase of the driving fields is also investigated. Effects such as enhancement or suppression of the squeezing peaks are shown in the spectrum as the relative phase is varied. An analytical explanation of the numerical findings is presented using dressed-states of the atom-field system.

Squeezing in a Λ -type three-level atom via spontaneously generated coherence

Isabel Gonzalo, M. A. Antón, F. Carreño +1 more

The squeezing spectrum of the fluorescent light is investigated for a laser-driven three-level atom of the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ configuration when quantum interference of the decay channels is accounted for. We show that when the two atomic transitions contribute to the detected fluorescence field, squeezing at certain frequency intervals is obtained in both the weak- and the high-Rabi-frequency regimes even for equally decay rates of the transitions. Unlike in two-level atoms in free space, squeezing can be obtained in both the in-phase and out-of-phase quadrature spectra although in different spectral regions. We also show that the squeezing spectrum can be controlled by an adequate selection of the Rabi frequencies and atomic detunings. Another remarkable effect is that squeezing can be achieved with proper relative phases of the driving fields. We provide an analytical description in the dressed basis which accounts for the main features of the squeezing spectra obtained from the numerical work.

Squeezing in anomalous resonance fluorescence

Z. Ficek, S. Swain

The squeezing properties of the fluorescence field emitted by a two-level atom driven by a coherent laser field in a squeezed vacuum are calculated. We show that in the region of the anomalous resonance fluorescence the emitted field exhibits squeezing that is much larger than that in the input squeezed vacuum. The squeezing spectrum attains a minimum value that corresponds to 75% squeezing. We also find that, in the total fluorescence field, squeezing attains an optimum achievable value in the fluorescence field emitted by a two-level atom. The optimum squeezing is associated with the collapse of the system into a pure state.

Cavity-Induced Enhancement of Squeezing in Resonance Fluorescence of a V-Type Three-Level Atom

Zhou Lu, Gao‐xiang Li, Mingsheng Zhan

The quadrature squeezing spectra in the resonance fluorescence of a V-type three-level atom driven by a coherent field and coupled to a single-mode cavity is investigated. For weak excitation, the fluorescence field exhibit squeezing in the out-of-phase quadrature. The coupling between the atom and the cavity mode can greatly enhance the squeezing centred at the laser frequency. More importantly, for strong excitation, under the effect of the cavity-atom coupling, the in-phase quadrature of fluorescence can exhibit two-mode squeezing at the two inner sideband frequencies. By working in the dressed-state representation and hiring secular approximation, we give an analytical explanation for the effect. The result shows, under appropriate conditions, the squeezing can be greatly enhanced by appropriately tuning the cavity resonant frequency.

Trichromatic phase dependence of squeezing in resonance fluorescence

Xiangming Hu, Xuehua Zhang

We investigate the quantum noise in phase quadratures of resonance fluorescence from a two-level atom driven by a trichromatic exciting field. It is shown that the noise spectra are crucially dependent on the sum of relative phases of the sideband components compared to the central component although the sideband exciting components are much weaker than the central component. When we tune the exciting sidebands on two-photon resonance with the Mollow sideband transitions and set the phase sum to $\ensuremath{\pi}$, sideband squeezing in the in-phase quadrature remains almost the same as in the monochromatic case. Once the phase sum is set to zero, the squeezing is destroyed. The responsible mechanism is explained in terms of two-photon emission processes induced by the trichromatic components and the interference between these processes.

Resonance fluorescence spectra of three-level atoms in a squeezed vacuum

M. R. Ferguson, Z. Ficek, Bryan J. Dalton

The fluorescence field from one of the two allowed transitions in a three-level atom can sense squeezed fluctuations of a vacuum field coupled to the other transition. We examine the fluorescence spectra of strongly driven three-level atoms in \ensuremath{\Lambda}, V, and cascade configurations in which one of the two one-photon transitions is coupled to a finite-bandwidth squeezed vacuum field, when the bandwidth is much smaller than the difference in the atomic transition frequencies, though much larger than atomic decay rates and Rabi frequencies of the driving fields. The driving fields are on one-photon resonance, and the squeezed vacuum field is generated by a degenerate parameter oscillator. Details are only given for the \ensuremath{\Lambda} configuration. The extension to the V and cascade configurations is straightforward. We find that in all configurations the fluorescence spectra of the transition not coupled to the squeezed vacuum field are composed of five lines, one central and two pairs of sidebands, with intensities and widths strongly influenced by the squeezed vacuum field. However, only the central component and the outer sidebands exhibit a dependence on the squeezing phase. We also examine the fluorescence spectrum for the cascade configuration with a squeezed vacuum field on resonance with the two-photon transition between the ground and the most excited states and now generated by a nondegenerate parametric oscillator. In this case, where the squeezed vacuum field can be made coupled to both transitions, all spectral lines depend on the squeezing phase. The spectral features are explained in terms of the dressed-atom model of the system. We show that the coherent mixing of the atomic states by the strong driving fields modifies transition rates between the dressed states, which results in the selective phase dependence of the spectral features. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
