Unpaired Majorana modes on dislocations and string defects in Kitaev's honeycomb model

Abstract

We study the gapped phase of Kitaev's honeycomb model (a ${Z}_{2}$ spin liquid) on a lattice with topological defects. We find that some dislocations and string defects carry unpaired Majorana fermions. Physical excitations associated with these defects are (complex) fermion modes made out of two (real) Majorana fermions connected by a ${Z}_{2}$ gauge string. The quantum state of these modes is robust against local noise and can be changed by winding a ${Z}_{2}$ vortex around one of the dislocations. The exact solution respects gauge invariance and reveals a crucial role of the gauge field in the physics of Majorana modes. To facilitate these theoretical developments, we recast the degenerate perturbation theory for spins in the language of Majorana fermions.

Topological Majorana flat bands in the Kitaev model on a Bishamon-kikko lattice

Kiyu Fukui, Yukitoshi Motome

We unveil an interesting example of topological flat bands of Majorana fermions in quantum spin liquids. We study the Kitaev model on a periodically depleted honeycomb lattice, under a magnetic field within the perturbation theory. The model can be straightforwardly extended while maintaining the exact solvability, and its ground state is a quantum spin liquid as on the honeycomb lattice. As fractionalized excitations, there are unpaired localized Majorana fermions in addition to the itinerant Majorana fermions and ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ fluxes. We show that, in the absence of the magnetic field, the Majorana fermions exhibit completely flat bands at zero energy, and by applying the magnetic field, these bands turn into topological flat bands with nonzero Chern number. By varying the anisotropy of the interactions and the magnitude of the magnetic field, we clarify that the system hosts a variety of topological phases that do not appear in the original honeycomb model. We emphasize that the topological flat bands underlying this rich topology come from the hybridization of the Majorana flat bands and unpaired Majorana fermions, which is unique to the flat bands of fractionalized excitations in quantum spin liquids. Our findings would stimulate the exploration of a new class of Kitaev materials exhibiting rich topology arising from topological Majorana flat bands.

Dynamical structure factor in the non-Abelian phase of the Kitaev honeycomb model in the presence of quenched disorder

Daniel Otten, Ananda Roy, Fabian Hassler

Kitaev's model of spins interacting on a honeycomb lattice describes a quantum spin liquid, where an emergent static ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge field is coupled to Majorana fermions. In the presence of an external magnetic field and for a range of interaction strengths, the system behaves as a gapped, non-Abelian quantum spin liquid. In this phase, the vortex excitations of the emergent ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge field have Majorana zero modes bound to them. Motivated by recent experimental progress in measuring and characterizing real materials that could exhibit spin-liquid behavior, we analytically calculate the dynamical spin structure factor in the non-Abelian phase of the Kitaev's honeycomb model. In particular, we treat the case of quenched disorder in the vortex configurations. Our calculations reveal a peak in the low-energy dynamical structure factor that is a signature of the spin-liquid behavior. We map the effective Hamiltonian to that of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor by using the Jordan-Wigner transformation. Subsequently, we analytically calculate the wave functions of the Majorana zero modes, the energy splitting for finite separation of the vortices and, finally, the dynamical structure factor in presence of quenched disorder.

Lattice Defects in the Kitaev Honeycomb Model

John Brennan, Jiří Vala

The Kitaev honeycomb lattice system is an important model of topological materials whose phase diagram exhibits both abelian and non-abelian topological phases. The latter, a so-called Ising phase, is related to topological superconductors. Its quasiparticle excitations, which are formed by Majorana fermions attached to vortices, show non-abelian fractional statistics and are known as Ising anyons. We investigate dislocation defects in the Ising phase of the Kitaev honeycomb model. After introducing them to the system, we accordingly generalize our solution of this model to the situation with the defects. The important part of this effort is developing an appropriate Jordan-Wigner fermionization procedure. It is expected that the presence of defects manifests itself by the formation of fermionic zero-energy modes around the defect end points. We numerically confirm this expectation and further investigate properties of these modes. The computational potential of our technique is demonstrated for both diagonalization and dynamical simulations. The latter focuses on the process of fusion of the vortex zero-energy modes with the Majorana fermions attached to the defect. This process simulates fusion of non-abelian Ising anyons.

Exact chiral-spin-liquid state in a Kitaev-type spin model

Jianlong Fu

We study a frustrated two-dimensional lattice spin model with Kitaev-type interaction. The lattice is obtained from the honeycomb lattice by replacing half of its sites with triangles. Using the SO(3) Majorana representation of spin, the model is exactly mapped into a ${Z}_{2}$ lattice gauge theory of complex fermions with standard Gauss law constraint. We show that the ground state of the model is a chiral spin liquid, and it has gapless excitations. The Chern number of the ground state is $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$, implying the existence of a chiral edge mode. The vortex excitation of the model is bound with a Majorana zero mode, such mode behaves as non-Abelian anyons.

Wegner's Ising gauge spins versus Kitaev's Majorana partons: Mapping and application to anisotropic confinement in spin-orbital liquids

Urban F. P. Seifert, Sergej Moroz

Emergent gauge theories take a prominent role in the description of quantum matter, supporting deconfined phases with topological order and fractionalized excitations. A common construction of \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 lattice gauge theories, first introduced by Wegner, involves Ising gauge spins placed on links and subject to a discrete \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 Gauss law constraint. As shown by Kitaev, \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 lattice gauge theories also emerge in the exact solution of certain spin systems with bond-dependent interactions. In this context, the \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 gauge field is constructed from Majorana fermions, with gauge constraints given by the parity of Majorana fermions on each site. In this work, we provide an explicit Jordan-Wigner transformation that maps between these two formulations on the square lattice, where the Kitaev-type gauge theory emerges as the exact solution of a spin-orbital (Kugel-Khomskii) Hamiltonian. We then apply our mapping to study local perturbations to the spin-orbital Hamiltonian, which correspond to anisotropic interactions between electric-field variables in the \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 gauge theory. These are shown to induce anisotropic confinement that is characterized by emergence of weakly-coupled one-dimensional spin chains. We study the nature of these phases and corresponding confinement transitions in both absence and presence of itinerant fermionic matter degrees of freedom. Finally, we discuss how our mapping can be applied to the Kitaev spin-1/2 model on the honeycomb lattice.
