General structure of quantum collisional models

Abstract

We point to the connection between a recently introduced class of non-Markovian master equations and the general structure of quantum collisional models. The basic construction relies on three basic ingredients: a collection of time dependent completely positive maps, a completely positive trace preserving transformation and a waiting time distribution characterizing a renewal process. The relationship between this construction and a Lindblad dynamics is clarified by expressing the solution of a Lindblad master equation in terms of demixtures over different stochastic trajectories for the statistical operator weighted by suitable probabilities on the trajectory space.

Quantum renewal processes

Bassano Vacchini

We introduce a general construction of master equations with memory kernel whose solutions are given by completely positive trace-preserving maps. These dynamics going beyond the Lindblad paradigm are obtained with reference to classical renewal processes, so that they are termed quantum renewal processes. They can be described by means of semigroup dynamics interrupted by jumps, separated by independently distributed time intervals, following suitable waiting time distributions. In this framework, one can further introduce modified processes, in which the first few events follow different distributions. A crucial role, marking an important difference with respect to the classical case, is played by operator ordering. Indeed, for the same choice of basic quantum transformations, different quantum dynamics arise. In particular, for the case of modified processes, it is natural to consider the time inverted operator ordering, in which the last few events are distributed differently.

Generalized Master Equations Leading to Completely Positive Dynamics

Bassano Vacchini

We provide a general construction of quantum generalized master equations with a memory kernel leading to well-defined, that is, completely positive and trace-preserving, time evolutions. The approach builds on an operator generalization of memory kernels appearing in the description of non-Markovian classical processes and puts into evidence the nonuniqueness of the relationship arising due to the typical quantum issue of operator ordering. The approach provides a physical interpretation of the structure of the kernels, and its connection with the classical viewpoint allows for a trajectory description of the dynamics. Previous apparently unrelated results are now connected in a unified framework, which further allows us to phenomenologically construct a large class of non-Markovian evolutions taking as the starting point collections of time-dependent maps and instantaneous transformations describing the microscopic interaction dynamics.

Generalized semi-Markov quantum evolution

Dariusz Chruściński, Andrzej Kossakowski

We provide a large class of quantum evolutions governed by the memory kernel master equation. This class defines a quantum analog of so-called semi-Markov classical stochastic dynamics. In this paper we provide a precise definition of quantum semi-Markov evolution, and using the appropriate gauge freedom we propose a suitable generalization which contains a majority of examples considered so far in the literature. The key concepts are quantum counterparts of classical waiting time distribution and survival probability---a quantum waiting time operator and a quantum survival operator, respectively. In particular collision models and their generalizations considered recently are special examples of generalized semi-Markov evolution. This approach allows for an interesting generalization of the trajectory description of the quantum dynamics in terms of positive operator-valued measure densities.

Non-Markovian master equations from piecewise dynamics

Bassano Vacchini

We construct a large class of completely positive and trace-preserving non-Markovian dynamical maps for an open quantum system. These maps arise from a piecewise dynamics for statistical operators characterized by a continuous time evolution interrupted by jumps, randomly distributed in time and described by a quantum channel. The state of the open system is shown to obey a closed evolution equation, given by a master equation with a memory kernel and an inhomogeneous term. The non-Markovianity of the obtained dynamics is explicitly assessed studying the behavior of the distinguishability of two different initial system's states with elapsing time.

Quantum jump trajectories, hybrid systems, non-Hermitian evolutions, quantum/classical walks

Alberto Barchielli

Quantum stochastic master equations of jump type are formulated in a general way and connections with quantum/classical hybrid systems and quantum filtering theory are discussed. By introducing the notion of ``typical trajectory", we show how to recursively construct the solution of the non-linear stochastic master equation (the conditional state). Moreover, by the notion of ``exclusive probability densities" we can describe all the probabilities related to the jumps, in particular, the waiting times of the jumps and their probability distributions. This general formulation and the idea of hybrid system allow to unify and generalize different fields: evolutions under non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, unitary dynamics interspersed by quantum channels at random times, quantum renewal processes, continuous time open quantum walks, Lindblad rate equation, ...

Embedding non-Markovian quantum collisional models into bipartite Markovian dynamics

Adrián A. Budini

A wide class of non-Markovian completely positive master equations can be formulated on the basis of quantum collisional models. In this phenomenological approach the dynamics of an open quantum system is modeled through an ensemble of stochastic realizations that consist in the application at random times of a (collisional) completely positive transformation over the system state. In this paper, we demonstrate that these kinds of models can be embedded in bipartite Markovian-Lindblad dynamics consisting of the system of interest and an auxiliary one. In contrast with phenomenological formulations, here the stochastic ensemble dynamics an the interevent time interval statistics are obtained from a quantum measurement theory after assuming that the auxiliary system is continuously monitored in time. Models where the system intercollisional dynamics is non-Markovian [B. Vacchini, Phys. Rev. A 87, 030101(R) (2013)] are also obtained from the present approach. The formalism is exemplified through bipartite dynamics that lead to non-Markovian system effects such as an environment-to-system backflow of information.
