Spin-orbit and impurity scattering in an integrable electron model: Exact results for dynamic correlations

Abstract

We introduce an integrable model of spin-polarized interacting electrons subject to a spin-conserving spin-orbit interaction. Using the Bethe ansatz and conformal field theory, we calculate the exact large-time single-electron and density correlations and find that while the spin-orbit interaction enhances the single-electron Green's function, the density correlations get suppressed. Adding a localized impurity and coupling it to the electrons so that integrability is preserved, the dynamic correlations are found to change significantly after a quantum quench with the impurity interaction switched on suddenly. When the electrons are confined to a periodic structure, the correlations are indifferent to the location of the impurity and only carry an imprint of its intrinsic properties. We conjecture that this unusual feature originates from the integrability of the model.

Spin-orbit interaction in the supersymmetric antiferromagnetict-Jchain with a magnetic impurity

Andrei A. Zvyagin

The effect of spin-orbit interaction in the strongly correlated exactly solvable electron model with magnetic impurity is studied. The considered magnetic impurity reveals the property of a “mobile” one. It is shown that the asymptotics of correlation functions, calculated in the framework of the conformal field theory and finite size corrections of the Bethe ansatz exact solution, are strongly affected by both, the spin-orbit coupling, and by the magnetic impurity.

Spinless impurities and Kondo-like behavior in strongly correlated electron systems

Satoshi Fujimoto

We investigate magnetic properties induced by a spinless impurity in strongly correlated electron systems, i.e., the Hubbard model in spatial dimension $D=1,2,$ and $3.$ For the one-dimensional (1D) system exploiting the Bethe ansatz exact solution we find that the spin susceptibility and the local density of states in the vicinity of a spinless impurity show divergent behaviors. The results imply that the induced local moment is not completely quenched at any finite temperatures. On the other hand, the spin lattice relaxation rate obtained by bosonization and boundary conformal field theory satisfies a relation analogous to the Korringa law, ${1/T}_{1}T\ensuremath{\sim}{\ensuremath{\chi}}^{2}.$ In the 2D and 3D systems, the analysis based upon the antiferromagnetically correlated Fermi liquid theory reveals that the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation developed in the bulk is much suppressed in the vicinity of a spinless impurity, and thus magnetic properties are governed by the induced local moment, which leads to the Korringa law of ${1/T}_{1}.$

Effects of spin-orbit interaction in the Hubbard chain with attractive interaction: Application to confined ultracold fermions

Andrei A. Zvyagin, P. Schlottmann

Motivated by recent experiments on ultracold fermions we study the effect of the spin-orbit interaction in an exactly solvable one-dimensional model with strong local attractive correlations between the fermions. We show that the asymptotes of correlation functions, calculated in the framework of the conformal field theory and finite size corrections of the Bethe ansatz exact solution, are strongly affected by the spin-orbit coupling. In the mixed phase, the correlation functions consist of terms that are the product of a power law of the distance and an oscillating function of the distance. We obtain the critical exponents for superfluidity and density waves. The leading exponents decrease as a function of spin-orbit coupling. In particular, the exponent for superfluidity is the smallest one signaling an instability to a phase where a weak interchain coupling can produce superfluidity of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type. The spatial oscillation of the order parameter is also modified by the spin-orbit parameter, i.e., its modulation is not just given by the spin imbalance.

Integrable supersymmetric t-J model with magnetic impurity

P. Schlottmann, Andrei A. Zvyagin

We consider the one-dimensional t-J model, which consists of spin-1/2 electrons on a lattice with nearest neighbor hopping t constrained by the excluded multiple occupancy of the lattice sites and spin-exchange J between neighboring sites. The model is integrable at the supersymmetric point, J=2t. We extend the model by introducing an impurity of arbitrary spin S that interacts with the electrons on the neighboring sites without destroying the integrability. The lattice model is defined by the scattering matrices via the quantum inverse scattering method. The interaction Hamiltonian between the impurity and the itinerant electrons is only explicitly constructed in the continuum limit. The discrete Bethe ansatz equations diagonalizing the model are derived and the solutions are classified according to the string hypothesis. The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations are derived and the impurity free energy is obtained for arbitrary bandfilling as a function of temperature and external magnetic field. The properties of the impurity depend on one coupling parameter. The impurity can localize up to one itinerant electron and has in general mixed valent properties. The integer valent low T small H fixed point of the impurity corresponds to an asymptotically free spin S, while if either T or H (or both) become large the impurity behaves like an asymptotically free spin (S+).

Correlated electrons in a zig-zag chain with the spin-orbit interaction: Exact solution

Andrei A. Zvyagin

The correlated electron model on a geometrically frustrated one-dimensional lattice with the spin-orbit coupling is studied. The exact solution is obtained using the Bethe ansatz. Zig-zag interaction can produce incommensurate charge and spin structures for large enough frustrating interactions. The spin-orbit coupling yields the behavior of correlation functions, reminiscent of the Fulde–Ferrell–Larkin–Ovchinnikov (FFLO) features of real type-II superconductors.
