Integrable supersymmetric t-J model with magnetic impurity

Abstract

We consider the one-dimensional t-J model, which consists of spin-1/2 electrons on a lattice with nearest neighbor hopping t constrained by the excluded multiple occupancy of the lattice sites and spin-exchange J between neighboring sites. The model is integrable at the supersymmetric point, J=2t. We extend the model by introducing an impurity of arbitrary spin S that interacts with the electrons on the neighboring sites without destroying the integrability. The lattice model is defined by the scattering matrices via the quantum inverse scattering method. The interaction Hamiltonian between the impurity and the itinerant electrons is only explicitly constructed in the continuum limit. The discrete Bethe ansatz equations diagonalizing the model are derived and the solutions are classified according to the string hypothesis. The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations are derived and the impurity free energy is obtained for arbitrary bandfilling as a function of temperature and external magnetic field. The properties of the impurity depend on one coupling parameter. The impurity can localize up to one itinerant electron and has in general mixed valent properties. The integer valent low T small H fixed point of the impurity corresponds to an asymptotically free spin S, while if either T or H (or both) become large the impurity behaves like an asymptotically free spin (S+).

Exact solution for an exchange impurity in a one-dimensional correlated host

Andrei A. Zvyagin, P. Schlottmann

The one-dimensional t - J model at the supersymmetric point, J = 2t, with a magnetic impurity of arbitrary spin S is studied exactly using the Bethe ansatz technique. The impurity interacts by spin exchange with the electrons on neighbouring sites of a lattice without destroying the integrability. The discrete Bethe ansatz equations diagonalizing the model, and the thermodynamic equations are derived. The impurity free energy is obtained for arbitrary band filling as a function of temperature and external magnetic field. The impurity can localize up to one itinerant hole, and has in general mixed-valent properties.

Coqblin-Schrieffer impurity in a one-dimensional correlated electron lattice

P. Schlottmann

We consider electrons of effective spin S on a chain with nearest-neighbour hopping t constrained by the excluded multiple occupancy of the lattice sites, and spin exchange J between neighbouring sites. The spin space of the model is invariant, and at the supersymmetric point, J = t , the charge and the spin play identical roles forming an integrable SU(2 S + 2) superalgebra. Without compromising the integrability we introduce a Coqblin-Schrieffer-like impurity of spin S , which interacts with the correlated conduction states of the host. The discrete Bethe ansatz equations diagonalizing the host with impurity are derived and the ground-state properties of the impurity are studied as a function of the Kondo exchange coupling. An undercompensated impurity of spin S embedded into a chain of interacting spin- electrons is also discussed.

One-dimensional heavy fermion lattice model

Andrei A. Zvyagin, P. Schlottmann

We consider a one-dimensional supersymmetric t−J model and introduce a finite concentration of impurities of arbitrary spin S without destroying the integrability. Using the Bethe ansatz equations diagonalizing the correlated host with impurities, we discuss the ground state properties as a function of magnetic field H and the Kondo exchange coupling. While an isolated impurity of spin S>1/2 has a magnetic ground state of effective spin (S−12), a finite concentration introduces a heavy impurity band and yields a singlet ground state with antiferromagnetically correlated impurities. A field H first polarizes the narrow impurity band. The impurities have mixed valent properties induced in part by correlations in the host. Some aspects of the model are related to heavy fermion alloys.

Thermodynamics of the degenerate supersymmetric t-J model in one dimension

P. Schlottmann

The one-dimensional SU(N)-invariant t-J model consists of electrons with N spin components on a lattice with nearest-neighbour hopping and spin exchange J. The multiple occupancy of the lattice sites is excluded. The model is integrable at the supersymmetric point, t=J. The discrete Bethe ansatz equations are analysed and the solutions are classified according to the string hypothesis. The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations are derived for arbitrary band filling in terms of thermodynamic energy potentials for the classes of eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. These equations are solved in limiting cases, e.g., S=1/2, the ground state and the high-temperature limit. If the charge fluctuations are suppressed the Bethe ansatz equations map onto those of the SU(N)-invariant Heisenberg chain.

Magnetic impurity in the one-dimensional Hubbard model

Andrei A. Zvyagin, P. Schlottmann

The Hubbard chain with a magnetic impurity of arbitrary spin $S$ is studied using the Bethe ansatz technique. We consider two kinds of impurities which interact with itinerant electrons on the neighboring lattice sites without destroying the integrability. The correlations in the host always induce valence fluctuations at the impurity site. For a repulsive Hubbard $U$, an impurity coupled via antiferromagnetic exchange to the host reveals magnetic properties similar to those of the ordinary Kondo effect. In contrast, a hybridization impurity (Anderson-like) embedded into the attractive Hubbard model gives rise to essentially different magnetic behavior. This difference is a consequence of the spin gap in the host.

Integrable Kondo impurities in the one-dimensional supersymmetricUmodel of strongly correlated electrons

Huan-Qiang Zhou, Xiangyu Ge, M. D. Gould

Integrable Kondo impurities in the one-dimensional supersymmetric U model of strongly correlated electrons are studied by means of the boundary graded quantum inverse scattering method. The boundary K -matrices depending on the local magnetic moments of the impurities are presented as non-trivial realizations of the reflection equation algebras in an impurity Hilbert space. Furthermore, the model Hamiltonian is diagonalized and the Bethe ansatz equations are derived. It is interesting to note that our model exhibits a free parameter in the bulk Hamiltonian but no free parameter exists on the boundaries. This is in sharp contrast to the impurity models arising from the supersymmetric t-J and extended Hubbard models where there is no free parameter in the bulk but there is a free parameter on each boundary.
