Abstract

We address the question of the role of quantum correlations beyond entanglement in the context of quantum magnetometry. We study the evolution of the rescaled variant of the geometric quantum discord of two electron-spin qubits interacting with an environment of nuclear spins via the hyperfine interaction. We have found that quantum correlations display a strong magnetic-field sensitivity which can be utilized for decoherence-driven measurements of the external magnetic field. The discord-based measurement is sensitive to a wider range of magnetic-field values than the entanglement-based measurement, including very small fields which are inaccessible via entanglement.

Sensitivity of entanglement decay of quantum-dot spin qubits to the external magnetic field

Paweł Mazurek, Katarzyna Roszak, Ravindra W. Chhajlany +1 more

We study the decay of entanglement of quantum-dot electron-spin qubits under hyperfine-interaction-mediated decoherence. We show that two-qubit entanglement of a single entangled initial state may exhibit decay characteristic of two disentanglement regimes in a single sample, when the external magnetic field is changed. The transition is manifested by the suppression of time-dependent entanglement oscillations which are superimposed on the slowly varying entanglement decay related to phase decoherence which results in oscillatory behavior of entanglement sudden death time as a function of the magnetic field. This unique behavior allows us to propose the double-quantum-dot two-electron spin Bell state as a promising candidate for precise measurements of the magnetic field.

Anomalous decay of quantum correlations of quantum-dot qubits

Katarzyna Roszak, Paweł Mazurek, Paweł Horodecki

We study the evolution of quantum correlations, quantified by the geometric discord, of two excitonic quantum-dot qubits under the influence of the phonon environment. We show that the decay of these correlations differs substantially from the decay of entanglement. Instead of displaying sudden-death-type behavior, the geometric discord shows a tendency to undergo transitions between different types of decay, is sensitive to nonlocal phase factors, and may already be enhanced by weak environment-mediated interactions. Hence, two-qubit quantum correlations are more robust under decoherence processes, while showing a richer and more complex spectrum of behavior under unitary and nonunitary evolution.

Post Markovian Dynamics of Quantum Correlations: Entanglement vs. Discord

Hamidreza Mohammadi

Dynamics of an open two-qubit system is investigated in the post-Markovian regime, where the environments have a short-term memory. Each qubit is coupled to separate environment which is held in its own temperature. The inter-qubit interaction is modeled by XY-Heisenberg model in the presence of spin-orbit interaction and inhomogeneous magnetic field. The dynamical behavior of entanglement and discord has been considered. The results show that, quantum discord is more robust than quantum entanglement, during the evolution. Also the asymmetric feature of quantum discord can be monitored by introducing the asymmetries due to inhomogeneity of magnetic field and temperature difference between the reservoirs. By employing proper parameters of the model, it is possible to maintain non-vanishing quantum correlation at high degree of temperature. The results can provide a useful recipe for studying of dynamical behavior of two-qubit systems such as trapped spin-electrons in coupled quantum dots.

Dynamics of entanglement of two electron spins interacting with nuclear spin baths in quantum dots

Igor Bragar, Łukasz Cywiński

We study the dynamics of entanglement of two electron spins in two quantum dots, in which each electron is interacting with its nuclear spin environment. Focusing on the case of uncoupled dots, and starting from either Bell or Werner states of two qubits, we calculate the decay of entanglement due to the hyperfine interaction with the nuclei. We mostly focus on the regime of magnetic fields in which the bath-induced electron spin flips play a role, for example, their presence leads to the appearance of entanglement sudden death at finite time for two qubits initialized in a Bell state. For these fields, the intrabath dipolar interactions and spatial inhomogeneity of hyperfine couplings are irrelevant on the time scale of coherence (and entanglement) decay, and most of the presented calculations are performed using the uniform-coupling approximation to the exact hyperfine Hamiltonian. We provide a comprehensive overview of entanglement decay in this regime, considering both free evolution of the qubits, and an echo protocol with simultaneous application of $\ensuremath{\pi}$ pulses to the two spins. All the currently relevant for experiments bath states are considered: the thermal state, narrowed states (characterized by diminished uncertainty of one of the components of the Overhauser field) of two uncorrelated baths, and a correlated narrowed state with a well-defined value of the $z$ component of the Overhauser field interdot gradient. While we mostly use concurrence to quantify the amount of entanglement in a mixed state of the two electron spins, we also show that their entanglement dynamics can be reconstructed from measurements of the currently relevant for experiments entanglement witnesses and the fidelity of quantum teleportation, performed using a partially disentangled state as a resource.

Quantum correlations in a system of nuclears= 1/2 spins in a strong magnetic field

Edward B. Fel’dman, E. I. Kuznetsova, M. A. Yurishchev

Entanglement and quantum discord for a pair of nuclear spins s = 1/2 in a nanopore filled with a gas of spin-carrying molecules (atoms) are studied. The correlation functions describing dynamics of dipolar-coupled spins in a nanopore are found. The dependence of spin-pair entanglement on the temperature and the number of spins is obtained from the reduced density matrix, which is centrosymmetric (CS). An analytic expression for the concurrence is obtained for an arbitrary CS density matrix. It is shown that the quantum discord as a measure of quantum correlations attains a significant value at low temperatures. It is also shown that the discord in the considered model has 'flickering' character and disappears periodically in the course of time evolution of the system. The geometric discord is studied for arbitrary 4 × 4 CS density matrices.

Quantum Correlations in a Two-Qubit Heisenberg XX Model under Intrinsic Decoherence

Liang Qiu

Taking into account the intrinsic decoherence, we have investigated quantum correlations in a two-qubit Heisenberg XX model when a nonuniform magnetic field is included. We compare entanglement measured by entanglement of formation, quantum discord and measurement-induced measurement (MID) and illustrate their different characteristics. Quantum discord and MID show the same features and always exist even though there is no entanglement in the long time limit. In the time evolution, quantum discord could be generated or enhanced to the stable value, while MID just decreases to the stable value.
