Abstract

Abstract The thermodynamic implications for the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of quantum systems are to date largely unexplored, especially for quantum many-body systems. In this paper we investigate the paradigmatic case of an array of nearest-neighbor coupled quantum harmonic oscillators interacting with a thermal bath and subjected to a quench of the inter-oscillator coupling strength. We study the work done on the system and its irreversible counterpart, and characterize analytically the fluctuation relations of the ensuing out-of-equilibrium dynamics. Finally, we showcase an interesting functional link between the dissipated work produced across a two-element chain and their degree of general quantum correlations. Our results suggest that, for the specific model at hand, the non-classical features of a harmonic system can influence significantly its thermodynamics.

Quantum Dynamics of Interacting oscillators in a thermal medium: A novel scheme

Ronak Moradi, Fardin Kheirandish

We develop an exact analytical framework for studying the nonequilibrium dynamics of interacting quantum harmonic oscillators coupled to a modelled thermal reservoir and driven by external classical fields. The total Hamiltonian is diagonalized via successive Bogoliubov transformations, enabling a nonperturbative treatment of dissipation and driving. For two coupled oscillators with an external source applied to the first, we derive explicit energy expressions and analyze their dependence on coupling and bath parameters. The phase-space structure is characterized through Husimi $Q$-functions for initial separable coherent and number states. We obtain the reduced density matrix elements in the number-state basis and demonstrate that, in the absence of driving and at zero temperature, the reduced density matrix of the main system satisfies the Lindblad master equation. A generating function for the Husimi function is introduced to facilitate computation of higher-order correlations. The analysis is then generalized to $n$ interacting oscillators, with analytical energy expressions provided and the case $n=3$ examined in detail. Our results establish a versatile and exact framework for driven-dissipative quantum systems, with potential applications in quantum thermodynamics, open quantum systems, and many-body physics.

Non-equilibrium thermodynamics of harmonically trapped bosons

Miguel Ángel García-March, Thomás Fogarty, Steve Campbell +2 more

We apply the framework of non-equilibrium quantum thermodynamics to the physics of quenched small-sized bosonic quantum gases in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. We show that dynamical orthogonality can occur in these few-body systems with strong interactions after a quench and we find its occurrence analytically for an infinitely repulsive pair of atoms. We further show this phenomena is related to the fundamental excitations that dictate the dynamics from the spectral function. We establish a clear qualitative link between the amount of (irreversible) work performed on the system and the establishment of entanglement. We extend our analysis to multipartite systems by examining the case of three trapped atoms. We show the initial (pre-quench) interactions play a vital role in determining the dynamical features, while the qualitative features of the two particle case appear to remain valid. Finally, we propose the use of the atomic density profile as a readily accessible indicator of the non-equilibrium properties of the systems in question.

An open harmonic chain: Exact vs global and local reduced dynamics

Melika Babakan, Fabio Benatti, Laleh Memarzadeh

In the following, we study the dissipative time-evolution of a quantum chain consisting of three coupled harmonic oscillators, the first and third of which weakly interact quadratically with two independent thermal baths in equilibrium at different temperatures. Due to the quadratic form of the total Hamiltonian, the unitary dynamics of the compound system is formally analytically solvable and defines a one-parameter group of Gaussian maps which enables us to solve the exact dynamics of the chain numerically. Following the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) approach to open quantum systems, one can perform the rotating wave approximation with respect to the interacting, or non-interacting chain Hamiltonian and respectively derive the so-called global and local master equations. The solutions of the ensuing different master equations can then be compared with the exact one, possibly sorting out the two approaches in correspondence to different time-scales of the system. We derive the steady states of the open chain quantum dynamics in the two approaches and show that the behaviour of fidelity between them versus inter-oscillator coupling depends on the two bath temperatures, revealing the existence of a temperature-dependent critical inter-oscillator coupling strength that determines the domain of validity of each approach. When the newly found coupling is less than this critical value, the local approach outperforms the global approach, whereas for larger inter-oscillator coupling, the global approach is a better approximation of the exact evolution. This critical value of inter-oscillator coupling depends on the two bath temperatures, which then play a crucial role in deciding the best possible approximating open dynamics.

Nonequilibrium quantum fluctuation relations for harmonic systems in nonthermal environments

D Pagel, P. Nalbach, A Alvermann +2 more

We formulate exact generalized nonequilibrium fluctuation relations for the quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator coupled to multiple harmonic baths. Each of the different baths is prepared in its own individual (in general nonthermal) state. Starting from the exact solution for the oscillator dynamics we study fluctuations of the oscillator position as well as of the energy current through the oscillator under general nonequilibrium conditions. In particular, we formulate a fluctuation-dissipation relation for the oscillator position autocorrelation function that generalizes the standard result for the case of a single bath at thermal equilibrium. Moreover, we show that the generating function for the position operator fullfills a generalized Gallavotti-Cohen-like relation. For the energy transfer through the oscillator, we determine the average energy current together with the current fluctuations. Finally, we discuss the generalization of the cumulant generating function for the energy transfer to nonthermal bath preparations.

Dynamics of an anharmonic oscillator that is harmonically coupled to a many-body system and the notion of an appropriate heat bath

Donald P. Visco, Surajit Sen

We report extensive numerical studies of the dynamics of a classical particle in an anharmonic one-dimensional potential while it is harmonically coupled to three different many-particle systems. The studies address the comparatively simpler dynamical problem when the energy of the anharmonic oscillator is sufficiently low. The first model is one in which the many-particle system is a chain of harmonic oscillators that have nearest-neighbor harmonic interactions. The anharmonic oscillator is connected to every harmonic oscillator via harmonic springs. The second model is identical to the first except that each oscillator is subjected to an additional one-body harmonic potential. The third model is identical to the second except that the nearest-neighbor couplings between the individual harmonic oscillators are absent, i.e., the oscillators are decoupled with respect to one another. In the first model we find that the lowest frequency of the anharmonic oscillator, while possessing a lower bound, increases as $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\propto}\sqrt{\mathrm{NK}},$ where $N$ is the number of oscillators in the bath and $K$ is the force constant describing the strength of interaction between the anharmonic oscillator and the interacting harmonic many-body system. In the second model we find aspects of dynamical correlations as seen in the canonical ensemble and a dominant frequency that increases as $\sqrt{\mathrm{NK}}.$ We recover the dynamical correlations of the anharmonic oscillator as obtained within the framework of a canonical ensemble [S. Sen, R. S. Sinkovits, and S. Chakravarti, Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 4855 (1996)] in the third model for sufficiently many harmonic oscillators. We comment briefly on an alternate way to correctly model heat baths for numerical studies on the dynamics of physical systems using canonical ensembles.

Many-body effects on the thermodynamics of closed quantum systems

A H Skelt, K Zawadzki, I D’Amico

Abstract Thermodynamics of quantum systems out-of-equilibrium is very important for the progress of quantum technologies, however, the effects of many-body interactions and their interplay with temperature, different drives and dynamical regimes is still largely unknown. Here we present a systematic study of these interplays in the case of driven Hubbard chains subject to a variety of interaction (from non-interacting to strongly correlated) and dynamical regimes (from sudden quench to quasi-adiabatic), and discuss which effects all these ingredients have on the work extraction and entropy production. As treatment of many-body interacting systems is highly challenging, we introduce a simple approximation which includes, for the average quantum work, many-body interactions only via the initial state, while the dynamics is fully non-interacting. We demonstrate that this simple approximation is surprisingly good for estimating both the average quantum work and the related entropy production, even when many-body correlations are significant.
