Interaction-free evolving states of a bipartite system

Abstract

We show that two interacting physical systems may admit entangled pure or nonseparable mixed states evolving in time as if the mutual interaction Hamiltonian were absent. In this paper we define these interaction-free evolving (IFE) states and characterize their existence for a generic binary system described by a time-independent Hamiltonian. A comparison between IFE subspace and the decoherence-free subspace is reported. The set of all pure IFE states is explicitly constructed for a nonhomogeneous spin-star-system model

Generalized interaction-free evolutions

Benedetto Militello, Dariusz Chruściński, ANTONINO MESSINA +2 more

A thorough analysis of the evolutions of bipartite systems characterized by the ``effective absence'' of interaction between the two subsystems is reported. First, the connection between the concepts underlying interaction-free evolutions (IFE) and decoherence-free subspaces (DFS) is explored, showing intricate relations between these concepts. Second, starting from this analysis and inspired by a generalization of DFS already known in the literature, we introduce the notion of generalized IFE (GIFE), also providing a useful characterization that allows one to develop a general scheme for finding GIFE states.

Interaction-free evolution in the presence of time-dependent Hamiltonians

Dariusz Chruściński, ANTONINO MESSINA, Benedetto Militello +1 more

The generalization of the concept of interaction-free evolutions (IFE) [Napoli et al., Phys. Rev. A 89, 062104 (2014)] to the case of time-dependent Hamiltonians is discussed. It turns out that the time-dependent case allows for much richer structures of interaction-free states and interaction-free subspaces. The general condition for the occurrence of IFE is found and exploited to analyze specific situations. Several examples are presented, each one associated to a class of Hamiltonians with specific features.

Interaction free and decoherence free states

Dariusz Chruściński, Anna Napoli, M. Guccione +2 more

An interaction free evolving state of a closed bipartite system composed of two interacting subsystems is a generally mixed state evolving as if the interaction were a c-number. In this paper we find the characteristic equation of states possessing similar properties for a bipartite systems governed by a linear dynamical equation whose generator is sum of a free term and an interaction term. In particular in the case of a small system coupled to its environment, we deduce the characteristic equation of decoherence free states namely mixed states evolving as if the interaction term were effectively inactive. Several examples illustrate the applicability of our theory in different physical contexts.

Exact dynamics of a two-qubit system in a spin star environment

Yamen Hamdouni, M. Fannes, Francesco Petruccione

We derive the exact reduced dynamics of a central two-qubit system in a spin star configuration. The exact evolution of the reduced system density matrix is obtained and we compute the limit of an infinite number of environment spins. Initially pure states of the central system evolve into mixed ones and we determine the decoherence-free states of the model. The long-time behavior is studied, partial decoherence is shown to be a result of the coupling of the qubits to the environment, and entanglement evolution of the central system is investigated.

Decoherence and the classes of maximally entangled states

Roman V. Buniy, Robert Feger, Thomas W. Kephart

Self-interactions and interaction with the environment inevitably push quantum systems towards highly mixed states, which is the definition of decoherence. However, if decoherence is completely suppressed, then any quantum system evolves unitarily through pure states towards maximally entangled configurations. We argue that these maximally entangled states of the systems fall into the well-defined classes that can be uniquely described by the values of certain entanglement invariants. After discussing these ideas, we present examples of maximally entangled states for a number of generic systems, construct compact states in the most entangled classes for tripartite systems, and suggest how they may be constructed for other [Formula: see text]-partite systems. We study random walks through the space of entanglement classes to see how unitary evolution along paths to the maximally entangled states, i.e. entanglement growth, works in practice.

On the Complexity of Finding Decoherence Free Subspaces

Evan Borras

Decoherence free subspaces are a steady-state structure of the open quantum system which preserves quantum coherence between the states lying with in it and thus has found a variety of applications throughout quantum information science and technology. In this paper we study the computational complexity of deciding whether an open quantum system admits a decoherence free subspace or not. More specifically we study this problem with in the context of Markovian open quantum systems, governed by the time-independent Lindblad master equation. Along the way we introduce the $k$-Local Lindbladian problem, which captures the difficulty of computing purity decay rates under Lindbladian dynamics. We show that both problems are hard for the complexity class Quantum Merlin Arthur (QMA) when the locality $k \geq 5$, with the first under perfect completeness and the second being complete for QMA. Our hardness construction generalizes Kitaev's clock Hamiltonian construction to the open quantum system setting by encoding the execution of a quantum circuit into the steady subspace of a Lindbladian containing both pure and mixed history states. This subspace is then mixed depending on the output of the encoded circuit. Our results suggest that deciding whether a generic Markovian open quantum system admits a decoherence free subspace is intractable even for quantum computation.
