Abstract

We study electrons hopping on a kagome lattice at third filling described by an extended Hubbard Hamiltonian with on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsions in the strongly correlated limit. As a consequence of the commensurate filling and the large interactions, each triangle has precisely two electrons in the effective low-energy description, and these electrons form chains of different lengths. The effective Hamiltonian includes the ring exchange around the hexagons as well as the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interaction. Using large-scale exact diagonalization, we find that the effective model exhibits two phases: If the charge fluctuations are small, the magnetic fluctuations confine the charges to short loops around hexagons, yielding a gapped charge-ordered phase. When the charge fluctuations dominate, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition to a resonating plaquette phase with ordered spins and gapless spin excitations. We find that a peculiar conservation law is fulfilled: the electron in the chains can be divided into two sublattices, and this division is conserved by the ring exchange term.

Néel order, ring exchange, and charge fluctuations in the half-filled Hubbard model

Jean-Yves P. Delannoy, Michel J. P. Gingras, P. C. W. Holdsworth +1 more

We investigate the ground state properties of the two-dimensional half-filled one band Hubbard model in the strong (large-$U$) to intermediate coupling limit (i.e., away from the strict Heisenberg limit) using an effective spin-only low-energy theory that includes nearest-neighbor exchange, ring exchange, and all other spin interactions to order $t{(t∕U)}^{3}$. We show that the operator for the staggered magnetization, transformed for use in the effective theory, differs from that for the order parameter of the spin model by a renormalization factor accounting for the increased charge fluctuations as $t∕U$ is increased from the $t∕U\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ Heisenberg limit. These charge fluctuations lead to an increase of the quantum fluctuations over and above those for an $S=1∕2$ antiferromagnet. The renormalization factor ensures that the zero temperature staggered moment for the Hubbard model is a monotonously decreasing function of $t∕U$, despite the fact that the moment of the spin Hamiltonian, which depends on transverse spin fluctuations only, in an increasing function of $t∕U$. We also comment on quantitative aspects of the $t∕U$ and $1∕S$ expansions.

Strongly interacting particles on an anisotropic kagome lattice

Chisa Hotta, Frank Pollmann

We study a model of strongly interacting spinless fermions and hard-core bosons on an anisotropic kagome lattice near 2/3-filling. Our main focus lies on the strongly anisotropic case in which the nearest–neighbor repulsions V and V ' are large compared to the hopping amplitudes | t | and | t '|. When t = t ' = 0, the system has a charge ordered insulating ground state where the charges align in striped configurations. Doping one electron or hole into the ground state yields an anisotropic metal at V ' > V , where the particle fractionalizes along the V '-bonds while propagates along the V -bonds in a one–body like manner. The sixth order ring exchange processes around the hexagonal unit of the lattice play a crucial role in forming a bound state of fractional charges.

Phase diagram of the 1 3 -filled extended Hubbard model on the kagome lattice

Karim Ferhat, Arnaud Ralko

We study the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model on the kagome lattice at 1/3 filling. By combining a configuration interaction approach to an unrestricted Hartree-Fock, we construct an effective Hamiltonian which takes the correlations back on top of the mean-field solution. We obtain a rich phase diagram with, in particular, the presence of two original phases. The first one consists of local polarized droplets of metal standing on the hexagons of the lattice and an enlarged kagome charge order, inversely polarized, on the remaining sites. The second, obeying a local ice-rule type constraint on the triangles of the kagome lattice, is driven by an antiferromagnetic coupling of spins and is constituted of disconnected six-spin singlet rings. The nature and stability of these phases at large interactions are studied via trial wave functions and perturbation theory.

Kinetic Ferromagnetism on a Kagome Lattice

Frank Pollmann, Peter Fulde, Kirill Shtengel

We study strongly correlated electrons on a kagome lattice at 1/6 (and 5/6) filling. They are described by an extended Hubbard Hamiltonian. We are concerned with the limit |t|<<V<<U with a hopping amplitude t, nearest-neighbor repulsion V, and on-site repulsion U. We derive an effective Hamiltonian and show, with the help of the Perron-Frobenius theorem, that the system is ferromagnetic at low temperatures. The robustness of ferromagnetism is discussed and extensions to other lattices are indicated.

Fermi-liquid-like phase driven by next-nearest-neighbor couplings in a lightly doped kagome-lattice $t$-$J$ model

Xu-Yan Jia, Fan Yang, D. N. Sheng +1 more

Due to the interplay between charge fluctuation and geometry frustration, the doped kagome-lattice Mott insulator is a fascinating platform to realize exotic quantum states. Through the state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group calculation, we explore the quantum phases of the lightly doped kagome-lattice $t$-$J$ model in the presence of the next-nearest-neighbor electron hopping $t_2$ and spin interaction $J_2$. On the $L_y = 3$ cylinder ($L_y$ is the number of unit cells along the circumference direction), we establish a quantum phase diagram with tuning $t_2 > 0$ and $J_2 > 0$, showing an emergent Fermi-liquid-like phase driven by increased $t_2$ and $J_2$, which sits at the neighbor of the previously identified charge density wave (CDW) phase. Compared with the CDW phase, the charge order is significantly suppressed in the Fermi-liquid-like phase, and most correlation functions are greatly enhanced with power-law decay. In particular, we find the absence of hole pairing and a strong three-sublattice magnetic correlation. On the wider $L_y = 4$ cylinder, this Fermi-liquid-like phase persists at low doping levels, strongly suggesting that this state might be stable in the two-dimensional kagome system.

From the triangular to the kagome lattice: Following the footprints of the ordered state

Liliana Arrachea, Luca Capriotti, Sandro Sorella

We study the spin-$1∕2$ Heisenberg model in a lattice that interpolates between the triangular and the kagome lattices. The exchange interaction along the bonds of the kagome lattice is $J$, and the one along the bonds connecting kagome and nonkagome sites is ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, so that ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}=J$ corresponds to the triangular limit and ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}=0$ to the kagome one. We use variational and exact diagonalization techniques. We analyze the behavior of the order parameter for the antiferromagnetic phase of the triangular lattice, the spin gap, and the structure of the spin excitations as functions of ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}∕J$. Our results indicate that the antiferromagnetic order is not affected by the reduction of ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ down to ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}∕J\ensuremath{\simeq}0.2$. Below this value, antiferromagnetic correlations grow weaker, a description of the ground state in terms of a N\'eel phase renormalized by quantum fluctuations becomes inadequate, and the finite-size spectra develop features that are not compatible with antiferromagnetic ordering. However, this phase does not appear to be connected to the kagome phase as well, as the low-energy spectra do not evolve with continuity for ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ to the kagome limit. In particular, for any nonzero value of ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, the latter interaction sets the energy scale for the low-lying spin excitations, and a gapless triplet spectrum, destabilizing the kagome phase, is expected.
