Abstract

We show that the cross Wigner function can be written in the form [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text] is the Fourier transform of ϕ and Ŝ is a metaplectic operator that projects onto a linear symplectomorphism S consisting of a rotation along an ellipse in phase space (or in the time-frequency space). This formulation can be extended to generic Weyl symbols and yields an interesting fractional generalization of the Weyl–Wigner formalism. It also provides a suitable approach to study the Bopp phase space representation of quantum mechanics, familiar from deformation quantization. Using the "metaplectic formulation" of the Wigner transform, we construct a complete set of intertwiners relating the Weyl and the Bopp pseudo-differential operators. This is an important result that allows us to prove the spectral and dynamical equivalence of the Schrödinger and the Bopp representations of quantum mechanics.

4 METAPLECTIC FORMULATION OF THE WIGNER TRANSFORM AND APPLICATIONS

Nuno Costa Dias, Maurice A. de Gosson, Nuno Prata

We show that the cross Wigner function can be written in the form $W(\psi, \phi)= \hat S (\psi \otimes \overline{\hat\phi})$ where ${\hat\phi}$ is the Fourier transform of $\phi$ and $\hat S$ is a metaplectic operator that projects onto a linear symplectomorphism $S$ consisting of a rotation along an ellipse in phase space (or in the time-frequency space). This formulation can be extended to generic Weyl symbols and yields an interesting fractional generalization of the Weyl-Wigner formalism. It also provides a suitable approach to study the Bopp phase space representation of quantum mechanics, familiar from deformation quantization. A Phase Space Representation of the Metaplectic Group

Maurice de Gosson

The symplectic group Sp(n) acts on phase space while the unitary representation of its double cover, Mp(n), the metaplectic group, acts on functions defined on configuration space. We will construct an extension Mp(n) of Mp(n) acting on square integrable functions on phase space. This is performed using previous results of ours involving explicit expressions of the twisted Weyl symbols of metaplectic operators and Bopp pseudodifferential operators, which are phase space extensions of the usual Weyl operators.

Quantum mechanics in phase space: the Schrodinger and the Moyal representations

Nuno Costa Dias, Maurice A. de Gosson, Franz Luef

We present a phase space formulation of quantum mechanics in the Schrödinger representation and derive the associated Weyl pseudo-differential calculus. We prove that the resulting theory is unitarily equivalent to the standard "configuration space" formulation and show that it allows for a uniform treatment of both pure and mixed quantum states. In the second part of the paper we determine the unitary transformation (and its infinitesimal generator) that maps the phase space Schrödinger representation into another (called Moyal) representation, where the wave function is the cross-Wigner function familiar from deformation quantization. Some features of this representation are studied, namely the associated pseudo-differential calculus and the main spectral and dynamical results. Finally, the relation with deformation quantization is discussed.

Integral representations for metaplectic operators: energy localization problems

P.J. Oonincx, H. G. ter Morsche

Applying the fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) and the Wigner distribution on a signal in a cascade fashion is equivalent with a rotation of the time and frequency parameters of the Wigner distribution. In this paper an integral representation formula is presented that yields affine transformations on the spatial and frequency parameters of the n-dimensional Wigner distribution if it is applied on a signal with the Wigner distribution as for the FRFT. This representation formula is used to solve certain energy localization problems in phase space.

Symplectically covariant Schrödinger equation in phase space

Maurice A. de Gosson

A classical theorem of Stone and von Neumann says that the Schrödinger representation is, up to unitary equivalences, the only irreducible representation of the Heisenberg group on the Hilbert space of square-integrable functions on configuration space. Using the Wigner-Moyal transform we construct an irreducible representation of the Heisenberg group on a certain Hilbert space of square-integrable functions defined on phase space. This allows us to extend the usual Weyl calculus into a phase-space calculus and leads us to a quantum mechanics in phase space, equivalent to standard quantum mechanics. We also briefly discuss the extension of metaplectic operators to phase space and the probabilistic interpretation of the solutions of the phase space Schrödinger equation

Cross Metaplectic Wigner Distribution: Definition, Properties, Relation to Short-Time Metaplectic Transform, and Uncertainty Principles

Zhichao Zhang, Liang He, Dong Li +2 more

The metaplectic operator has shown to be a valid technique for generalizing the notion of cross Wigner distribution to achieve time-frequency superresolution. Inspired by the latest work (Cordero and Rodino, 2022), we revisit the notion of cross Wigner distribution in metaplectic transform domains by introducing two$2N\times 2N$symplectic matrices rather than integrating them into one$4N\times 4N$symplectic matrix. We style the derived general formulation as the cross metaplectic Wigner distribution and obtain its basic properties including time translation property, frequency modulation property, time translation and frequency modulation property, Moyal formula, complex conjugate symmetry, time reversal symmetry, and scaling property. We use it to define the so-called short-time metaplectic transform and clarify the equivalence between them. We establish the standard Heisenberg’s uncertainty principles for the cross metaplectic Wigner distribution, i.e., an attainable lower bound for two real-valued functions in cross metaplectic Wigner distribution domains and a sequence of attainable (unattainable) lower bounds for two complex-valued (one real-valued and the other complex-valued) functions in orthogonal, orthonormal, the minimum eigenvalue commutative and the maximum eigenvalue commutative cross metaplectic Wigner distribution domains. We further demonstrate the time-frequency superresolution superiority of the derived results over the conventional one through theoretical analyses and numerical experiments.

We show that the cross Wigner function can be written in the form W(ψ,ϕ)=S^(ψ⊗ϕ^‾)W(\psi, \phi)= \hat S (\psi \otimes \overline{\hat\phi})W(ψ,ϕ)=S^(ψ⊗ϕ^) where ϕ^{\hat\phi}ϕ^ is the Fourier transform of ϕ\phiϕ and S^\hat SS^ is a metaplectic operator that projects onto a linear symplectomorphism SSS consisting of a rotation along an ellipse in phase space (or in the time-frequency space).
