Berry-Phase-Induced Dimerization in One-Dimensional Quadrupolar Systems

Abstract

We investigate the effect of the Berry phase on quadrupoles that occur, for example, in the low-energy description of spin models. Specifically, we study here the one-dimensional bilinear-biquadratic spin-one model. An open question for many years about this model is whether it has a nondimerized fluctuating nematic phase. The dimerization has recently been proposed to be related to Berry phases of the quantum fluctuations. We use an effective low-energy description to calculate the scaling of the dimerization according to this theory and then verify the predictions using large scale density-matrix renormalization group simulations, giving good evidence that the state is dimerized all the way up to its transition into the ferromagnetic phase. We furthermore discuss the multiplet structure found in the entanglement spectrum of the ground state wave functions.

Probable absence of a quadrupolar spin-nematic phase in the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain

We study numerically the ground-state phase diagram of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain near the ferromagnetic instability point, where the existence of a gapped or gapless nondimerized quantum nematic phase has been suggested. Our results, obtained by a highly accurate density-matrix renormalization-group calculation, are consistent with the view that the order parameter characterizing the dimer phase vanishes only at the point where the system becomes ferromagnetic, although the existence of a gapped or gapless nondimerized phase in a very narrow parameter range between the ferromagnetic and the dimerized regimes cannot be ruled out.

Spin nematics correlations in bilinear-biquadratic S=1 spin chains

Andreas Martin Läuchli, Guido Schmid, Simon Trebst

We present an extensive numerical study of spin quadrupolar correlations in single and coupled bilinear-biquadratic spin one chains, using several methods such as exact diagonalization, density matrix renormalization group, and strong coupling series expansions. For the single chain, we clarify the dominant correlation function in the enigmatic gapless period-three phase for $\ensuremath{\theta}∊(\ensuremath{\pi}∕4,\ensuremath{\pi}∕2)$, which is of spin quadrupolar nature with a period three spatial structure. Then we revisit the open problem of the possible existence of a ferroquadrupolar phase between the dimerized and the ferromagnetic phases. Although an extended critical region is in principle compatible with the numerical results, a scenario with a huge crossover scale is more plausible. Finally we study the fate of the dimerized phase upon coupling two chains in a ladder geometry. The dimerized phase rapidly vanishes and an extended gapped phase takes over. This gapped phase presumably has dominant short-ranged ferroquadrupolar correlations for $\ensuremath{\theta}∊(\ensuremath{-}3\ensuremath{\pi},4,\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\pi}∕2)$ and---surprisingly---seems to be adiabatically connected to the plaquette single solid phase of the Heisenberg $S=1$ ladder and therefore also with the Haldane phase of isolated chains.

Quantum Spin Nematics, Dimerization, and Deconfined Criticality in Quasi-1D Spin-One Magnets

Tarun Grover, T. Senthil

We study theoretically the destruction of spin nematic order due to quantum fluctuations in quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 magnets. If the nematic ordering is disordered by condensing disclinations, then quantum Berry phase effects induce dimerization in the resulting paramagnet. We develop a theory for a Landau-forbidden second order transition between the spin nematic and dimerized states found in recent numerical calculations. Numerical tests of the theory are suggested.

Search for the nondimerized quantum nematic phase in the spin-1 chain

Gábor Fáth, Jenő Sólyom

Chubukov's proposal concerning the possibility of a nondimerized quantum nematic phase in the ground-state phase diagram of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain is studied numerically. Our results do not support the existence of this phase, but instead they indicate a direct transition from the ferromagnetic into the dimerized phase.

Density matrix renormalization group study of nematicity in two dimensions: Application to a spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic model on the square lattice

Wen-Jun Hu, Shou-Shu Gong, Hsin-Hua Lai +2 more

Nematic order is an exotic property observed in several strongly correlated systems, such as iron-based superconductors. Using large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) techniques, we study at zero temperature the nematic spin liquid that competes with spin dipolar and quadrupolar orders. We use these nematic orders to characterize different quantum phases and quantum phase transitions. More specifically, we study a spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice with couplings beyond nearest neighbors. We focus on parameter regions around the highly symmetric $SU(3)$ point where the bilinear and biquadratic interactions are equal. With growing further-neighbor biquadratic interactions, we identify different spin dipolar and quadrupolar orders. We find that the DMRG results for cylindrical geometries correctly detect nematicity in different quantum states and accurately characterize the quantum phase transitions among them. Therefore, spin-driven nematicity, here defined as the spontaneous breaking of the lattice invariance under a ${90}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ rotation, is an order parameter which can be studied directly in DMRG calculations in two dimensions in different quantum states.

Phase Diagram of the S = 1 Bilinear Biquadratic Model

Kenji Harada, Naoki Kawashima, Matthias Troyer

The S = 1 bilinear biquadratic model is an effective spin model for 23Na atoms in an optical lattice. We study the ground state in one and two dimensions through quantum Monte Carlo simulations using a non‐binary loop algorithm which was recently proposed. In one dimension, the critical quadrupolar phase argued by Läuchli is not confirmed in quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In two dimensions, simulation results show a direct phase transition between dimer and quadrupolar phases where the coupling constant between chains becomes large.
