Chiral Spin Liquid in a Frustrated Anisotropic Kagome Heisenberg Model

Abstract

Kalmeyer-Laughlin (KL) chiral spin liquid (CSL) is a type of quantum spin liquid without time-reversal symmetry, and it is considered as the parent state of an exotic type of superconductor--anyon superconductor. Such an exotic state has been sought for more than twenty years; however, it remains unclear whether it can exist in a realistic system where time-reversal symmetry is breaking (T breaking) spontaneously. By using the density matrix renormalization group, we show that KL CSL exists in a frustrated anisotropic kagome Heisenberg model, which has spontaneous T breaking. We find that our model has two topological degenerate ground states, which exhibit nonvanishing scalar chirality order and are protected by finite excitation gap. Furthermore, we identify this state as KL CSL by the characteristic edge conformal field theory from the entanglement spectrum and the quasiparticles braiding statistics extracted from the modular matrix. We also study how this CSL phase evolves as the system approaches the nearest-neighbor kagome Heisenberg model.

Emergent Chiral Spin Liquid: Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in a Kagome Heisenberg Model

Shou-Shu Gong, Wei Zhu, D. N. Sheng

The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) realized in two-dimensional electron systems under a magnetic field is one of the most remarkable discoveries in condensed matter physics. Interestingly, it has been proposed that FQHE can also emerge in time-reversal invariant spin systems, known as the chiral spin liquid (CSL) characterized by the topological order and the emerging of the fractionalized quasiparticles. A CSL can naturally lead to the exotic superconductivity originating from the condense of anyonic quasiparticles. Although CSL was highly sought after for more than twenty years, it had never been found in a spin isotropic Heisenberg model or related materials. By developing a density-matrix renormalization group based method for adiabatically inserting flux, we discover a FQHE in a spin-½ isotropic kagome Heisenberg model. We identify this FQHE state as the long-sought CSL with a uniform chiral order spontaneously breaking time reversal symmetry, which is uniquely characterized by the half-integer quantized topological Chern number protected by a robust excitation gap. The CSL is found to be at the neighbor of the previously identified Z2 spin liquid, which may lead to an exotic quantum phase transition between two gapped topological spin liquids.

Semion wave function and energetics in a chiral spin liquid on the Kagome lattice

Łukasz Cincio, Guifré Vidal, Bela Bauer

Recent years have seen the discovery of a chiral spin liquid state - a bosonic analogue of a fractional Quantum Hall state first put forward by Kalmeyer and Laughlin in 1987 - in several deformations of the Heisenberg model on the Kagome lattice. Here, we apply state-of-the-art numerical techniques to one such model, where breaking of the time-reversal symmetry drives the system into the chiral phase. Our methods allow us to obtain explicit matrix-product state representations of the low-lying excitations of the chiral spin liquid state, including the topologically non-trivial semionic excitation. We characterize these excitations and study their energetics as the model is tuned towards a topological phase transition.

Chiral, Double-semion Spin Liquids and their Transitions in Spin-1/2 XXZ Kagome Antiferromagnets

Yin-Chen He, Yan Chen

By using the density matrix renormalization group, we study the spin-liquid phases of spin-$1/2$ XXZ kagome antiferromagnets. We find that the emergence of spin liquid phase does not depend on the anisotropy of the XXZ interaction. In particular, the two extreme limits---Ising (strong $S^z$ interaction) and XY (zero $S^z$ interaction)---host the same spin-liquid phases as the isotropic Heisenberg model. Both the time-reversal-invariant spin liquid and the chiral spin liquid with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking are obtained. We show they evolve continuously into each other by tuning the second- and third-neighbor interactions. To understand the continuous phase transition between these two spin liquids, we construct a phenomenological theory, and propose the double-semion spin liquid as the candidate ground state of nearest-neighbor XXZ kagome antiferromagnets, including the most studied nearest-neighbor spin-$1/2$ kagome antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model.

Quantum phase diagram and chiral spin liquid in the extended spin- 12 honeycomb XY model

Yixuan Huang, Xiaoyu Dong, D. N. Sheng +1 more

The frustrated XY model on the honeycomb lattice has drawn lots of attention because of the potential emergence of chiral spin liquid (CSL) with the increasing of frustrations or competing interactions. In this paper, we study the extended spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XY model with nearest-neighbor $({J}_{1})$, and next-nearest-neighbor $({J}_{2})$ interactions in the presence of a three-spins chiral $({J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}})$ term using density matrix renormalization group methods. We obtain a quantum phase diagram with both conventionally ordered and topologically ordered phases. In particular, the long-sought Kalmeyer-Laughlin CSL is shown to emerge under a small ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$ perturbation due to the interplay of the magnetic frustration and chiral interactions. The CSL, which is a nonmagnetic phase, is identified by the scalar chiral order, the finite spin gap on a torus, and the chiral entanglement spectrum described by chiral $SU{(2)}_{1}$ conformal field theory.

Chiral spin liquid on a Shastry-Sutherland Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Jian-Wei Yang, Weiwei Luo, W. Zhu +3 more

We demonstrate the existence of a topological chiral spin liquid in the frustrated Shastry-Sutherland Heisenberg model with an additional spin chirality interaction, using numerically unbiased exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. We establish a quantum phase diagram where conventional phases, including dimer singlet, plaquette singlet, N\'eel, and collinear phase, can be clearly identified by suitable local order parameters. Among them, an $\text{SU}{(2)}_{1}$ chiral spin liquid emerges in the highly frustrated region, which is unambiguously identified by two topologically degenerate ground states, a modular matrix, and characteristic level counting in an entanglement spectrum, featuring the same topological order of the $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ bosonic Laughlin state. The phase boundaries among the different orders are determined by the energy level crossing analysis and wave-function fidelity susceptibility.

Chiral broken symmetry descendants of the kagome lattice chiral spin liquid

Anjishnu Bose, Arijit Haldar, Erik Schwartz Sørensen +1 more

The breaking of chiral and time-reversal symmetries provides a pathway to exotic quantum phenomena and topological phases. Recent work has extensively explored the resulting emergence of chiral charge orders and chiral spin liquids (CSLs) on the kagome lattice. Such CSLs are closely tied to bosonic fractional quantum Hall states with anyonic quasiparticles; however, their connection to nearby ordered states has remained a mystery. Here, we use spin-wave theory, parton Gutzwiller wave functions, and exact diagonalization to show that two distinct magnetic orders with uniform scalar chirality---the XYZ umbrella state and the octahedral spin crystal--emerge as competing orders in close proximity to the CSL. In this letter, we highlight the intimate link between a topologically ordered liquid and broken symmetry states with nontrivial real-space topology.
