Gaussian and Non-Gaussian operations on non-Gaussian state: engineering non-Gaussianity

Abstract

Abstract Multiple photon subtraction applied to a displaced phase-averaged coherent state, which is a non-Gaussian classical state, produces conditional states with a non trivial (positive) Glauber-Sudarshan Prepresentation. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that, despite its simplicity, this class of conditional states cannot be fully characterized by direct detection of photon numbers. In particular, the non-Gaussianity of the state is a characteristics that must be assessed by phase-sensitive measurements. We also show that the non-Gaussianity of conditional states can be manipulated by choosing suitable conditioning values and composition of phase-averaged states.

Manipulating the non-Gaussianity of phase-randomized coherent states

Alessia Allevi, Stefano Olivares, Maria Bondani

We experimentally investigate the non-Gaussian features of the phase-randomized coherent states, a class of states exploited in communication channels and in decoy state-based quantum key distribution protocols. In particular, we reconstruct their phase-insensitive Wigner functions and quantify their non-Gaussianity. The measurements are performed in the mesoscopic photon-number domain by means of a direct detection scheme involving linear detectors.

The non-Gaussianity and nonclassicality of photon-subtracted-then-added squeezing-enhanced coherent state

Ngoc Duy Tinh Phan, Minh Duc Truong

Abstract In this paper, we aim to introduce a new state called photon-subtracted-then-added squeezing-enhanced coherent state (PSASECS) by multiple photon subtraction and then addition to a squeezing-enhanced coherent state. We investigate the non-Gaussianity and nonclassicality of this new state in detail, including its Wigner function, sub-Poissonian statistics, Q -function, squeezing, and antibunching properties. The obtained results indicate that these non-Gaussian and nonclassical characteristics have been enhanced by appropriately changing between photon subtraction l and photon addition k . Additionally, the non-Gaussianity and nonclassicality of PSASECS are enhanced compared to cases involving only the addition or subtraction of photons. This demonstrates the importance of subtracting and then adding photons to the squeezing-enhanced coherent state, and introducing a significant state for application in quantum optics, particularly in mitigating phase noise fluctuations in quantum devices.

Characterization of phase-averaged coherent states

Alessia Allevi, Maria Bondani, Paulina Marian +2 more

We present the full characterization of phase-randomized or phase-averaged coherent states, a class of states exploited in communication channels and in decoy state-based quantum key distribution protocols. We report on the suitable formalism to analytically describe the main features of these states and on their experimental investigation, that results in agreement with theory. In particular, we consider a recently proposed non-Gaussianity measure based on the quantum fidelity, that we compare with previous ones, and we use the mutual information to investigate the amount of correlations one can produce by manipulating this class of states.

Non-Gaussianity of quantum states: An experimental test on single-photon-added coherent states

Marco Barbieri, Nicolò Spagnolo, Marco G. Genoni +5 more

Non-Gaussian states and processes are useful resources in quantum information with continuous variables. An experimentally accessible criterion has been proposed to measure the degree of non-Gaussianity of quantum states based on the conditional entropy of the state with a Gaussian reference. Here we adopt such a criterion to characterize an important class of nonclassical states: single-photon-added coherent states. Our studies demonstrate the reliability and sensitivity of this measure and use it to quantify how detrimental is the role of experimental imperfections in our implementation.

Photon-number discrimination without a photon counter and its application to reconstructing non-Gaussian states

Helen M. Chrzanowski, J. Bernu, Ben M. Sparkes +5 more

The nonlinearity of a conditional photon-counting measurement can be used to ``de-Gaussify'' a Gaussian state of light. Here we present and experimentally demonstrate a technique for photon-number resolution using only homodyne detection. We then apply this technique to inform a conditional measurement, unambiguously reconstructing the statistics of the non-Gaussian one- and two-photon-subtracted squeezed vacuum states. Although our photon-number measurement relies on ensemble averages and cannot be used to prepare non-Gaussian states of light, its high efficiency, photon-number-resolving capabilities, and compatibility with the telecommunications band make it suitable for quantum-information tasks relying on the outcomes of mean values.

Nonclassicality versus quantum non-Gaussianity of photon-subtracted displaced Fock state

Deepak Deepak, Arpita Chatterjee

In this paper, a quantitative investigation of the non-classical and quantum non-Gaussian characters of the photon-subtracted displaced Fock state [Formula: see text], where k is the number of photons subtracted and n is Fock parameter, is performed by using a collection of measures like Wigner logarithmic negativity, linear entropy potential, skew information-based measure, and relative entropy of quantum non-Gaussianity. It is noticed that the number of photons subtracted ( k) changes the nonclassicality and quantum non-Gaussianity in a significant amount in the regime of small values of the displacement parameter, whereas the Fock parameter ( n) presents a notable change in the large regime of the displacement parameter. In this respect, the role of the Fock parameter is found to be stronger as compared to the photon subtraction number. Finally, the Wigner function dynamics considering the effects of photon loss channel is used to show that the Wigner negativity can only be detected by highly efficient detectors.
