Abstract

Here, we provide a simple Hubbard-like model of spin-$1/2$ fermions that gives rise to the SU(2)-symmetric Thirring model that is equivalent, in the low-energy limit, to the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons model. First, we identify the regime that simulates the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. Then, we suitably extend this model so that it gives rise to the SU(2) Chern-Simons theory with level $k\ensuremath{\ge}2$ that can support non-Abelian anyons. This is achieved by introducing multiple fermionic species and modifying the Thirring interactions, while preserving the SU(2) symmetry. Our proposal provides the means to theoretically and experimentally probe non-Abelian SU(2) level $k$ topological phases.

Fermionic Magnons, Non-Abelian Spinons, and the Spin Quantum Hall Effect from an Exactly Solvable Spin- 1 / 2 Kitaev Model with SU(2) Symmetry

Hong Yao, D. H. Lee

We introduce an exactly solvable SU(2)-invariant spin-1/2 model with exotic spin excitations. With time reversal symmetry (TRS), the ground state is a spin liquid with gapless or gapped spin-1 but fermionic excitations. When TRS is broken, the resulting spin liquid exhibits deconfined vortex excitations which carry spin-1/2 and obey non-Abelian statistics. We show that this SU(2) invariant non-Abelian spin liquid exhibits the spin quantum Hall effect with quantized spin Hall conductivity σ(xy)(s)=ℏ/2π, and that the spin response is effectively described by the SO(3) level-1 Chern-Simons theory at low energy. We further propose that a SU(2) level-2 Chern-Simons theory is the effective field theory describing the topological structure of the non-Abelian SU(2) invariant spin liquid.

Extended Hubbard Model with Ring Exchange: A Route to a Non-Abelian Topological Phase

Michael Hartley Freedman, Chetan Nayak, Kirill Shtengel

We propose an extended Hubbard model on a 2D kagome lattice with an additional ring exchange term. The particles can be either bosons or spinless fermions. We analyze the model at the special filling fraction 1/6, where it is closely related to the quantum dimer model. We show how to arrive at an exactly soluble point whose ground state is the "d-isotopy" transition point into a stable phase with a certain type of non-Abelian topological order. Near the "special" values, d=2cos(pi/(k+2), this topological phase has anyonic excitations closely related to SU(2) Chern-Simons theory at level k.

Abelian Chern-Simons-Maxwell Theory from a Tight-Binding Model of Spinless Fermions

Giandomenico Palumbo, Jiannis K. Pachos

Abelian Chern-Simons-Maxwell theory can emerge from the bosonization of the (2+1)-dimensional Thirring model that describes interacting Dirac fermions. Here we show how the Thirring model manifests itself in the low energy limit of a two-dimensional tight-binding model of spinless fermions. To establish that, we employ a modification of Haldane's model, where the "doubling" of fermions is rectified by adiabatic elimination. Subsequently, fermionic interactions are introduced that lead to the analytically tractable Thirring model. By local density measurements of the lattice fermions we can establish that for specific values of the couplings the model exhibits the confining (2+1)-dimensional QED phase or a topological ordered phase that corresponds to the Chern-Simons theory. The implementation of the model as well as the measurement protocol are accessible with the current technology of cold atoms in optical lattices.

Non-Abelian Anyon Superconductivity

Waheb Bishara, Chetan Nayak

Non-Abelian anyons exist in certain spin models and may exist in quantum Hall systems at certain filling fractions. In this work, we studied the ground state of dynamical SU(2) level-kappa Chern-Simons non-Abelian anyons at finite density and no external magnetic field. We find that, in the large-kappa limit, the topological interaction induces a pairing instability and the ground state is a superconductor with d+id gap symmetry. We also develop a picture of pairing for the special value kappa=2 and argue that the ground state is a superfluid of pairs for all values of kappa.

Ising anyons in the $SU(2)_2$ Chern--Simons theory

Artem Belov, Andrey Morozov

The present work is motivated by the statement that the Ising minimal model $\mathcal{M}(4,3)$ is equivalent, at the level of observables, to the $SU(2)_2$ Chern--Simons theory. At first glance, however, these two theories appear to differ substantially. For instance, the number of irreducible highest-weight representations does not match the number of Ising anyons. For tensor products of low degree, these discrepancies are examined in this work. While representation structure differs, it does not affect the observables underlying topological quantum computation algorithms.

Mean Field Theory for Fermion-based U(2) Anyons

Patrick N. McGraw

The energy density is computed for a U(2) Chern-Simons theory coupled to a non-relativistic fermion field (a theory of ``non-Abelian anyons'') under the assumptions of uniform charge and matter density. When the matter field is a spinless fermion, we find that this energy is independent of the two Chern-Simons coupling constants and is minimized when the non-Abelian charge density is zero. This suggests that there is no spontaneous breaking of the SU(2) subgroup of the symmetry, at least in this mean-field approximation. For spin-1/2 fermions, we find self-consistent mean-field states with a small non-Abelian charge density, which vanishes as the theory of free fermions is approached.
