Abstract

We analyze the non-Markovian character of the dynamics of an open two-level atom interacting with a gas of ultra-cold fermions. In particular, we discuss the connection between the phenomena of orthogonality catastrophe and Fermi edge singularity occurring in such a kind of environment and the memory-keeping effects which are displayed in the time evolution of the open system.

Orthogonality Catastrophe and Decoherence in a Trapped-Fermion Environment

A. Sindona, John Goold, Nicola Lo Gullo +2 more

The Fermi-edge singularity and the Anderson orthogonality catastrophe describe the universal physics which occurs when a Fermi sea is locally quenched by the sudden switching of a scattering potential, leading to a brutal disturbance of its ground state. We demonstrate that the effect can be seen in the controllable domain of ultracold trapped gases by providing an analytic description of the out-of-equilibrium response to an atomic impurity, both at zero and at finite temperature. Furthermore, we link the transient behavior of the gas to the decoherence of the impurity, and to the degree of the non-Markovian nature of its dynamics.

Correlated and critical phenomena in multipartite quantum non-Markovianity

Ignacio González, ́Angel Rivas

The authors analyze the exact dynamics of two interacting atoms in a resonant cavity, showing how memory effects can be induced by decreasing atom-separation or by increasing the number of atoms. In order to do this, they introduce a non-singular measure to characterize Markovian to non-Markovian transitions in multipartite systems influenced by structured environments.

Dynamically stabilized decoherence-free states in non-Markovian open fermionic systems

Heng-Na Xiong, Wei-Min Zhang, Matisse Wei-Yuan Tu +1 more

Decoherence-free subspaces (DFSs) provide a strategy for protecting the dynamics of an open system from decoherence induced by the system-environment interaction. So far, DFSs have been primarily studied in the framework of Markovian master equations. In this work, we study decoherence-free (DF) states in the general setting of a non-Markovian fermionic environment. We identify the DF states by diagonalizing the nonunitary evolution operator for a two-level fermionic system attached to an electron reservoir. By solving the exact master equation, we show that DF states can be stabilized dynamically.

Non-Markovian decoherence dynamics in nonequilibrium environments

Xiang-Ji Cai, Yujun Zheng

We theoretically investigate the non-Markovian dynamical decoherence of a quantum system coupled to nonequilibrium environments with nonstationary statistical properties. We show the time evolution of the decoherence factor in real-imaginary space to study the environment-induced energy renormalization and backaction of coherence which are associated with the unitary and nonunitary parts of the quantum master equation, respectively. It is also shown that the nonequilibrium decoherence dynamics displays a transition between Markovian and non-Markovian and the transition boundary depends on the environmental parameters. The results are helpful for further understanding non-Markovian dynamics and coherence backaction on an open quantum system from environments.

Markovian treatment of non-Markovian dynamics of open Fermionic systems

Feng Chen, Enrico Arrigoni, Michael Galperin

Abstract We show that an open fermionic system coupled to a continuous environment with unitary system-environment evolution can be exactly mapped onto an auxiliary system consisting of the physical fermion system and a set of discrete fermionic modes subject to non-unitary Lindblad-type system-modes evolution in such a way that reduced dynamics of the fermionic system in the two cases are the same. Conditions for equivalence of reduced dynamics in the two systems are identified and a proof is presented. Our study extends recent work on Bose systems (Tamascelli et al 2018 Phys. Rev. Lett. 120 030402) to the case of open quantum Fermi systems and to multi-time correlation functions. Numerical simulations within a generic junction model are presented for illustration.

Crossover between non-Markovian and Markovian dynamics induced by a hierarchical environment

Tiantian Ma, Yusui Chen, Tian Chen +2 more

Non-Markovian evolution of an open quantum system can be induced by the memory effects of a reservoir. Although a reservoir with stronger memory effects may seem like it should cause stronger non-Markovian effects on the system of interest, this seemingly intuitive thinking may not always be correct. We illustrate this by investigating a qubit (a two-level atom) that is coupled to a hierarchical environment, which contains a single-mode cavity and a reservoir consisting of an infinite number of modes. We show how the non-Markovian character of the system is influenced by the coupling strength between the qubit and cavity and the correlation time of the reservoir. In particular, we found a phenomenon whereby the qubit Markovian and non-Markovian transition exhibits a anomalous pattern in a parameter space depicted by the coupling strength and the correlation time of the reservoir.
