Abstract

The J$_1$-J$_2$ antiferromagnetic Ising model on the fractal Sierpi\'nski gasket is intensively studied, and a number of exotic properties are disclosed. The ground state phase diagram in the plane of magnetic field-interaction of the system is obtained, where three nontrivial phases including the $1/3$ magnetization plateau ordered and disordered phases, and the $5/9$ plateau partially ordered phase, as well as five boundaries and two intersection points are accurately identified in terms of the uniform and subset magnetization and the residual entropy as well. The thermodynamic properties of the three plateau phases are probed by exploring the temperature-dependence of magnetization, specific heat, susceptibility and spin-spin correlations, where some interesting features due to the special geometry of the Sierpi\'nski gasket are discovered. No phase transitions are observed in this model. In the absence of a magnetic field, the unusual temperature dependence of the spin correlation length is obtained with $0 \leq$J$_2/$J$_1<1$, and an interesting crossover behavior between different phases at J$_2/$J$_1=1$ is unveiled, whose dynamics can be described by the J$_2/$J$_1$-dependence of the specific heat, susceptibility and spin correlation functions. The exotic spin-spin correlation patterns that share the same special rotational symmetry as that of the Sierpi\'nski gasket are obtained in both the $1/3$ plateau disordered phase and the $5/9$ plateau partially ordered phase.

QUANTUM DISORDER OF AN ANTIFERROMAGNETIC SPIN MODEL ON THE SIERPIŃSKI GASKET

ANDREAS VOIGT, Johannes Richter

We study the ground state magnetic order of the quantum antiferromagnet on the fractal Sierpiński gasket, a system with a dimension between one and two. Using exact diagonalisation we analyse the ground state and thermodynamic properties of small finite systems and calculate data like spin-spin correlations and specific heat. We find arguments that the ground state remains disordered for an XY or Ising like anisotropy in the spin exchange away from the isotropic Heisenberg point.

The anisotropic quantum antiferromagnet on the Sierpinski gasket : ground state and thermodynamics

Voigt, A., Wolfgang Wenzel, Johannes Richter +1 more

We investigate an antiferromagnetic s=1/2 quantum spin system with anisotropic spin exchange on a fractal lattice, the Sierpinski gasket. We introduce a novel approximative numerical method, the configuration selective diagonalization (CSD) and apply this method to a the Sierpinski gasket with N=42. Using this and other methods we calculate ground state energies, spin gap, spin-spin correlations and specific heat data and conclude that the s=1/2 quantum antiferromagnet on the Sierpinski gasket shows a disordered magnetic ground state with on the Sierpinski gasket shows a disordered magnetic ground state with a very short correlation length of xiapproximate to1 and an, albeit very small, spin gap. This conclusion holds for Heisenberg as well a for XY exchange.

Gapless Spin Liquid and Nonlocal Corner Excitation in the Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on Fractal

Haiyuan Zou, Wei Wang

Motivated by the mathematical beauty and the recent experimental realizations of fractal systems, we study the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a Sierpiński gasket. The fractal porous feature generates new kinds of frustration to exhibit exotic quantum states. Using advanced tensor network techniques, we identify a quantum gapless-spin-liquid ground state in fractional spatial dimension. This fractal spin system also demonstrates nontrivial nonlocal properties. While the extremely short-range correlation causes a highly degenerate spin form factor, the entanglement in this fractal system suggests a long-range scaling behavior. We also study the dynamic structure factor and clearly identify the gapless excitation with a stable corner excitation emerged from the ground-state entanglement. Our results unambiguously point out multiple essential properties of this fractal spin system, and open a new route to explore spin liquid and frustrated magnetism.

Meandering stripes in the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ Ising model on the honeycomb lattice

Denis Gessert, Martin Weigel, Wolfhard Janke E

We study the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ Ising model on the honeycomb lattice with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor couplings fixed at $J_1=1$ and strong antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions, i.e., $J_2 \leq -1/4$. Little is known for this range of $J_2$, whereas for less negative values of $J_2$ the system orders ferromagnetically at low temperatures and appears to remain in the Ising universality class. In previous work it was shown that the model has a largely degenerate ground state, and it was conjectured that there is some kind of phase transition. We introduce a complex-valued nematic order parameter, which can differentiate between the high-temperature paramagnetic phase and the observed partially-disordered stripe phase at lower temperatures. Configurations in this phase consist of stripes of spins parallel with respect to one lattice direction, which collectively meander along the remaining two, producing partially disordered ground states. The sharp peaks in the specific heat observed in earlier work only appear when using periodic boundary conditions and are absent for free boundaries. Additionally, we reveal a striking dependence of the behavior on the aspect ratio of the considered samples. Ultimately, even a careful finite-size scaling analysis for $J_2 = -0.5$ and $J_2 = -1$ is unable to clearly discern between a crossover without any singularities and some form of continuous transition, including the possibility of an infinite-order transition of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type. For $J_2=-1/4$ we find that the system remains disordered at all temperatures and that it exhibits a finite ground-state entropy per site, for which our simulations provide the accurate asymptotic estimate $S(T=0)/N = 0.230\,960\,93(14)$ in the thermodynamic limit $N\rightarrow\infty$.

Quantum phase transition in transverse-field Ising model on Sierpiński gasket lattice

Tymoteusz Braciszewski, Oliwier Urbański, Piotr Tomczak

We investigate the quantum phase transition in the transverse-field Ising model on the Sierpiński gasket using finite-size scaling (FSS) and numerical renormalization group (NRG). Since next generations of the fractal lattice contain exponentially more spins, which in turn increase exponentially the Hilbert space dimension, we challenge and prove usefulness of small systems in FSS. We identified a quantum critical point at $λ_c \approx 2.63 - 2.93$, with critical exponents $ ν\approx 0.64 - 0.71, β\approx 0.30, γ\approx 1.67$ and $z \approx 1.33$. The numerical renormalization group method produced results consistent with finite-size scaling approach ($λ_c = 2.766$$, β= 0.316$), supporting our findings. Compared to the values reported so far in the literature, critical field is in a strong disagreement, while exponents are generally similar excluding $β$ and $γ$. However, it should be noted, that the lattice investigated in previous works is different from ours, while the latter is in our opinion the standard Sierpiński gasket.

Fractal Quantum Phase Transitions: Critical Phenomena Beyond Renormalization

Zheng Zhou, Xuefeng Zhang, Frank Pollmann +1 more

We identify a quantum critical point with fractal symmetry whose effective theory eludes the renormalization group framework. We consider the Newman-Moore model with three-body interaction subjected to an external transverse field, which exhibits a Kramers-Wannier type self-duality and a fractal $Z_2$ symmetry with Ising charge conserved on a fractal subset of sites, i.e., on Sierpinski gaskets. Using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we identify a continuous quantum phase transition between a phase with spontaneous fractal symmetry breaking and a paramagnetic phase. This phase transition is characterized by the emergence of a fractal scaling dimension $d=\ln(3)/\ln(2)$ at the quantum critical point, where the power-law exponent of the correlation function is related to the fractal dimension of the Sierpinski triangle. We develop a field theory to elucidate such quantum criticality and denote the fractal scaling as a subsequence of UV-IR mixing, where the low energy modes at the critical point are manipulated by short-wavelength physics due to the fractal symmetry.
