Correspondence between classical and Dirac-Pauli spinors in view of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation

Abstract

The classical dynamics for a charged spin particle is governed by the Lorentz force equation for orbital motion and by the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi (T-BMT) equation for spin precession. In static and homogeneous electromagnetic fields, it has been shown that the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transform of the Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian, which describes the relativistic quantum theory for a spin-$1/2$ particle, is consistent with the classical Hamiltonian (with both the orbital and spin parts) up to the order of $1/{m}^{14}$ ($m$ is the particle's mass) in the low-energy and weak-field limit. In this paper, we extend this correspondence to the case of inhomogeneous fields. Regardless of the field gradient (e.g. Stern-Gerlach) force, the T-BMT equation is unaltered and thus the classical Hamiltonian remains the same, but subtleties arise and need to be clarified. For the relativistic quantum theory, we apply Eriksen's method to obtain the exact FW transformations for the two special cases, which in conjunction strongly suggest that, in the weak-field limit, the FW transformed Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian (except for the Darwin term) is in agreement with the classical Hamiltonian in a manner that classical variables correspond to quantum operators via a specific Weyl ordering. Meanwhile, the Darwin term is shown to have no classical correspondence.

Exact correspondence between classical and Dirac-Pauli spinors in the weak-field limit of static and homogeneous electromagnetic fields

Dah-Wei Chiou, Tsung-Wei Chen

It has long been speculated that the Dirac or, more generally, the Dirac-Pauli spinor in the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) representation should behave like a classical relativistic spinor in the low-energy limit when the probability of particle-antiparticle pair creation and annihilation is negligible. In the weak-field limit of static and homogeneous electromagnetic fields, by applying the method of direct perturbation theory inductively on the orders of $1/c$ in the power series, we rigorously prove that it is indeed the case: the FW transformation of the Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian is in full agreement with the classical counterpart, which is the sum of the orbital Hamiltonian for the Lorentz force equation and the spin Hamiltonian for the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation.

Exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation of the Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian by Kutzelnigg's method

Dah-Wei Chiou, Tsung-Wei Chen

We apply Kutzelnigg's method for the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation of the Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian. The exact FW transformations exist and agree with those obtained by Eriksen's method for two special cases. In the weak-field limit of static and homogeneous electromagnetic fields, the long-held speculation is rigorously proven, by mathematical induction on the orders of $1/c$ in the power series, that the FW transformed Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian is in full agreement with the classical counterpart, which is the sum of the orbital Hamiltonian for the Lorentz force equation and the spin Hamiltonian for the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation.

Foldy-Wouthyusen transformation and semiclassical limit for relativistic particles in strong external fields

Alexander J. Silenko

A general method of the Foldy-Wouthyusen (FW) transformation for relativistic particles of arbitrary spin in strong external fields has been developed. The use of the found transformation operator is not restricted by any definite commutation relations between even and odd operators. The final FW Hamiltonian can be expanded into a power series in the Planck constant which characterizes the order of magnitude of quantum corrections. Exact expressions for low-order terms in the Planck constant can be derived. Finding these expressions allows one to perform a simple transition to the semiclassical approximation which defines a classical limit of the relativistic quantum mechanics. As an example, interactions of spin-1/2 and scalar particles with a strong electromagnetic field have been considered. Quantum and semiclassical equations of motion of particles and their spins have been deduced. Full agreement between quantum and classical theories has been established.

Dynamics of the relativistic electron spin in an electromagnetic field

Ritwik Mondal, Peter M. Oppeneer

A relativistic spin operator cannot be uniquely defined within relativistic quantum mechanics. Previously, different proper relativistic spin operators have been proposed, such as spin operators of the Foldy-Wouthuysen and Pryce type, that both commute with the free-particle Dirac Hamiltonian and represent constants of motion. Here we consider the dynamics of a relativistic electron spin in an external electromagnetic field. We use two different Hamiltonians to derive the corresponding spin dynamics. These two are: (a) the Dirac Hamiltonian in the presence of an external field, and (b) the semirelativistic expansion of the same. Considering the Foldy-Wouthuysen and Pryce spin operators we show that these lead to different spin dynamics in an external electromagnetic field, which offers possibilities to distinguish their action. We find that the dynamics of both spin operators involve spin-dependent and spin-independent terms, however, the Foldy-Wouthuysen spin dynamics additionally accounts for the relativistic particle-antiparticle coupling. We conclude that the Pryce spin operator provides a suitable description of the relativistic spin dynamics in a weak-to-intermediate external field, whereas the Foldy-Wouthuysen spin operator is more suitable in the strong field regime.

Foldy-Wouthuysen Transformation and Semiclassical Transition for Relativistic Quantum Mechanics

Alexander J. Silenko

It is shown that the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for relativistic particles in strong external fields provides the possibility of obtaining a meaningful classical limit of the relativistic quantum mechanics. The full agreement between quantum and classical theories is proved. The coincidence of the semiclassical equations of motion of particles and their spins with the corresponding classical equations is established. The Niels Bohr's correspondence principle is valid not only in the limit of large spin quantum numbers but also for particles with any spin as well as for spinless particles.

The classical Hamiltonian of a point charged particle with intrinsic spin, which is composed of the relativistic orbit Hamiltonian and the spin Hamiltonian. This spin Hamiltonian can be derived from the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation. In our thesis, we will prove that the classical Hamiltonian in which the gyromagnetic ratio equals 2 is in agreement with the low-energy limit of the Dirac equation, the relativistic quantum theory for a spin-1/2 charged particle. For this purpose, we apply the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation to the Dirac Hamiltonian under the assumptions of the static and homogeneous electromagnetic fields. Furthermore, in order to maintain such a correspondence in arbitrary gyromagnetic ratio cases, we perform the F-W transformation to the Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian, which is the Dirac Hamiltonian plus the anomalous magnetic dipole moment Hamiltonian. Up to the twelfth-order of F-W transformed Dirac and Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian, the calculation results are in accord with the corresponding classical Hamiltonians.
