Quadratic control of quantum processes

Abstract

Within the framework of the Accardi-Fagnola-Quaegebeur (AFQ) representation free calculus of \cite{b}, we consider the problem of controlling the size of a quantum stochastic flow generated by a unitary stochastic evolution affected by quantum noise. In the case when the evolution is driven by first order white noise (which includes quantum Brownian motion) the control is shown to be given in terms of the solution of an algebraic Riccati equation. This is done by first solving the problem of controlling (by minimizing an associated quadratic performance criterion) a stochastic process whose evolution is described by a stochastic differential equation of the type considerd in \cite{b}. The solution is given as a feedback control law in terms of the solution of a stochastic Riccati equation.

Application of Quantum Stochastic Calculus to Feedback Control

Andreas Boukas

The basic aspects of the Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic calculus and of the Accardi-Fagnola-Quaegebeur representation free stochastic calculus are presented. The basic features of the stochastic calculus for the square of white noise recently developed by Accardi-Boukas are described. Control of Quantum Langevin Equations

Luigi Accardi, Andreas Boukas

The problem of controlling quantum stochastic evolutions arises naturally in several different fields such as quantum chemistry, quantum information theory, quantum engineering, etc. In this paper, we apply the recently discovered closed form of the unitarity conditions for stochastic evolutions driven by the square of white noise [9] to solve this problem in the case of quadratic cost functionals (cf. (5.5) below). The optimal control is explicitly given in terms of the solution of an operator Riccati equation. Under general conditions on the system Hamiltonian part of the stochastic evolution and on the system observable to be controlled, this equation admits solutions with the required properties and they can be explicitly described.

Control of quantum stochastic differential equations

We review the basic features of the quantum stochastic calculus. Iteration schemes for the computation of the matrix elements of \nsolutions of unitary quantum stochastic evolutions and associated quantum flows are provided along with a basic error analysis of the convergence of \nthe iteration schemes. The application of quantum stochastic calculus to the solution of the quantum version of the quadratic cost control problem \nis described.

Using the closed Itô's table for the renormalized square of white noise, recently obtained by Accardi, Hida, and Kuo in Ref. 4, we consider the problem of providing necessary and sufficient conditions for the unitarity of the solutions of a certain type of quantum stochastic differential equations.

On the separation principle of quantum control

Luc Bouten, Ramon van Handel

It is well known that quantum continuous observations and nonlinear filtering can be developed within the framework of the quantum stochastic calculus of Hudson-Parthasarathy. The addition of real-time feedback control has been discussed by many authors, but the foundations of the theory still appear to be relatively undeveloped. Here we introduce the notion of a controlled quantum flow, where feedback is taken into account by allowing the coefficients of the quantum stochastic differential equation to be adapted processes in the observation algebra. We then prove a separation theorem for quantum control: the admissible control that minimizes a given cost function is a memoryless function of the filter, provided that the associated Bellman equation has a sufficiently regular solution. Along the way we obtain results on existence and uniqueness of the solutions of controlled quantum filtering equations and on the innovations problem in the quantum setting.
