Quasiparticle Berry curvature and Chern numbers in spin-orbit-coupled bosonic Mott insulators

Abstract

We study the ground-state topology and quasiparticle properties in bosonic Mott insulators with two-dimensional spin-orbit couplings in cold atomic optical lattices. We show that the many-body Chern and spin-Chern number can be expressed as an integral of the quasihole Berry curvatures over the Brillouin zone. Using a strong-coupling perturbation theory, for an experimentally feasible spin-orbit coupling, we compute the Berry curvature and the spin Chern number and find that these quantities can be generated purely by interactions. We also compute the quasiparticle dispersions, spectral weights, and the quasimomentum space distribution of particle and spin density, which can be accessed in cold-atom experiments and used to deduce the Berry curvature and Chern numbers.

Topological Transport in Spin-Orbit Coupled Bosonic Mott Insulators

Clement H. Wong, R. A. Duine

We investigate topological transport in spin-orbit coupled bosonic Mott insulators. We show that interactions can lead to anomalous quasiparticle dynamics even when the spin-orbit coupling is Abelian. To illustrate the latter, we consider the spin-orbit coupling realized in the experiment of Lin et al. [Nature (London) 471, 83 (2011)]. For this spin-orbit coupling, we compute the quasiparticle dispersions and spectral weights, the interaction-induced momentum-space Berry curvature, and the momentum-space distribution of spin density, and propose experimental signatures. Furthermore, we find that, for a generic spin orbit coupling, in our approximation for the single-particle propagator, the ground state can in principle support an integer Hall conductivity if the sum of the Chern numbers of the hole bands is nonzero.

Higher Berry curvature, second Chern numbers and magnetoelectric coupling in crystalline insulators

Niclas Heinsdorf, Ken Shiozaki

We rewrite a lattice model of the four-dimensional Chern insulator as a family of translationally-invariant infinite chains over the three-dimensional Brillouin zone and compute its higher three-form Berry curvature using infinite matrix product states (iMPS). We calculate the topological phase diagram of the associated Dixmier--Douady--Kapustin--Spodyneiko (DDKS) number as a function of the model's mass term, and show that it is exactly congruent to the phase diagram in terms of the second Chern number, the analytic expression of which is known for this particular model. This agreement demonstrates that higher Berry curvature can be used to compute second Chern numbers in a manifestly quantized manner. Motivated by the connection between the second Chern form and the Chern--Simons axion coupling, we study magnetoelectric coupling in three dimensions and its relation to higher Berry phases.

Simulating bosonic Chern insulators in one-dimensional optical superlattices

Yu-Lian Chen, Guo-Qing Zhang, Dan-Wei Zhang +1 more

We study the topological properties of an extended Bose-Hubbard model with cyclically modulated hopping and on-site potential parameters, which can be realized with ultracold bosonic atoms in a one-dimensional optical superlattice. We show that the interacting bosonic chain at half filling and in the deep Mott insulating regime can simulate bosonic Chern insulators with a topological phase diagram similar to that of the Haldane model of noninteracting fermions. Furthermore, we explore the topological properties of the ground state by calculating the many-body Chern number, the quasiparticle energy spectrum with gapless edge modes, the topological pumping of the interacting bosons, and the topological phase transition from normal (trivial) to topological Mott insulators. We also present the global phase diagram of the many-body ground state, which contains a superfluid phase and two Mott insulating phases with trivial (a zero Chern number) and nontrivial topologies (a nonzero Chern number), respectively.

Chern Kondo Insulator in an Optical Lattice

Hua Chen, Xiong-Jun Liu, Xiaoming Xie

We propose to realize and observe Chern Kondo insulators in an optical superlattice with laser-assisted s and p orbital hybridization and a synthetic gauge field, which can be engineered based on the recent cold atom experiments. Considering a double-well square optical lattice, the localized s orbitals are decoupled from itinerant p bands and are driven into a Mott insulator due to the strong Hubbard interaction. Raman laser beams are then applied to induce tunnelings between s and p orbitals, and generate a staggered flux simultaneously. Because of the strong Hubbard interaction of s orbital states, we predict the existence of a critical Raman laser-assisted coupling, beyond which the Kondo screening is achieved, and then a fully gapped Chern Kondo phase emerges, with the topology characterized by integer Chern numbers. Being a strongly correlated topological state, the Chern Kondo phase is different from the single-particle quantum anomalous Hall state, and can be identified by measuring the band topology and double occupancy of s orbitals. The experimental realization and detection of the predicted Chern Kondo insulator are also proposed.

Chern number and Berry curvature for Gaussian mixed states of fermions

Lukas Wawer, Michael Fleischhauer

We generalize the concept of topological invariants for mixed states based on the ensemble geometric phase (EGP) to two-dimensional band structures. In contrast to the geometric Uhlmann phase for density matrices, the EGP leads to a proper Chern number for Gaussian, finite-temperature, or nonequilibrium steady states. The Chern number can be expressed as an integral of the ground-state Berry curvature of a fictitious lattice Hamiltonian, constructed from single-particle correlations. For the Chern number to be nonzero the fictitious Hamiltonian has to break time-reversal symmetry.

Superfluid-insulator transition of two-species bosons with spin-orbit coupling

Saptarshi Mandal, Kush Saha, K. Sengupta

Motivated by recent experiments [Y. J. Lin et al., Nature (London) 471, 83 (2011)], we study Mott phases and superfluid-insulator (SI) transitions of two-species ultracold bosonic atoms in a two-dimensional square optical lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude $t$ and in the presence of a spin-orbit coupling characterized by a tunable strength $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. Using both strong-coupling expansion and Gutzwiller mean-field theory, we chart out the phase diagrams of the bosons in the presence of such spin-orbit interaction. We compute the momentum distribution of the bosons in the Mott phase near the SI transition point and show that it displays precursor peaks whose position in the Brillouin zone can be varied by tuning $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. Our analysis of the critical theory of the transition unravels the presence of unconventional quantum critical points at $t/\ensuremath{\gamma}=0$, which are accompanied by emergence of an additional gapless mode in the critical region. We also study the superfluid phases of the bosons near the SI transition using a Gutzwiller mean-field theory that reveals the existence of a twisted superfluid phase with an anisotropic twist angle which depends on $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. Finally, we compute the collective modes of the bosons and point out the presence of reentrant SI transitions as a function of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ for nonzero $t$. We propose experiments to test our theory.
