Quantum Quasicrystals of Spin-Orbit-Coupled Dipolar Bosons

Abstract

We study quasi-two-dimensional dipolar Bose gases in which the bosons experience a Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We show that the degenerate dispersion minimum due to the spin-orbit coupling, combined with the long-range dipolar interaction, can stabilize a number of quantum crystalline and quasicrystalline ground states. Coupling the bosons to a fermionic species can further stabilize these phases. We estimate that the crystalline and quasicrystalline phases should be detectable in realistic dipolar condensates, e.g., dysprosium, and discuss their symmetries and excitations.

Meron Ground State of Rashba Spin-Orbit-Coupled Dipolar Bosons

Ryan Wilson, Brandon Anderson, Charles W. Clark

We study the effects of dipolar interactions on a Bose-Einstein condensate with synthetically generated Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The dipolar interaction we consider includes terms that couple spin and orbital angular momentum in a way perfectly congruent with the single-particle Rashba coupling. We show that this internal spin-orbit coupling plays a crucial role in the rich ground-state phase diagram of the trapped condensate. In particular, we predict the emergence of a thermodynamically stable ground state with a meron spin configuration.

Thermodynamics and Melting of a Quantum Quasicrystal

Anonymous, Thomas G. Kiely, Leon Balents +1 more

A quantum quasicrystal was proposed to exist by mean-field, variational arguments in two-dimensional Rashba spin-orbit coupled BECs with dipolar interactions. Despite this remarkable prediction, there is little known about the superfluid character or stability of this quasicrystalline state against thermal and quantum fluctuations, whose importance is implied by the massive single-particle degeneracy of the Rashba Hamiltonian. Here, we apply field-theoretic numerical simulations based on a boson coherent state path integral representation to simulate the finite-temperature behavior of a periodic approximant of an octagonal quasicrystal. We find that the quasicrystal state maintains a 50% superfluid fraction down to low temperature, suggesting supersolid character. We compute a phase diagram that depicts a region of thermodynamic stability for the octagonal quasicrystal phase at low temperature. At intermediate temperature, the quasicrystal undergoes a first-order transition into a crystalline BEC with hexagonal symmetry. Our findings support a possible experimental realization of the octagonal quasicrystal in ^{164}Dy quantum gases below a temperature of 75 nK.

Exploring Quantum Phases of Dipolar Gases through Quasicrystalline Confinement

Vinicius Zampronio, Alejandro Mendoza-Coto, Tommaso Macrì +1 more

The effects of frustration on extended supersolid states is a largely unexplored subject in the realm of cold-atom systems. In this work, we explore the impact of quasicrystalline lattices on the supersolid phases of dipolar bosons. Our findings reveal that weak quasicrystalline lattices can induce a variety of modulated phases, merging the inherent solid pattern with a quasiperiodic decoration induced by the external potential. As the lattice becomes stronger, we observe a superquasicrystal phase and a Bose glass phase. Our results, supported by a detailed discussion on experimental feasibility using dysprosium atoms and quasicrystalline optical lattice potentials, open a new avenue in the exploration of long-range interacting quantum systems in aperiodic environments. We provide a solid foundation for future experimental investigations, potentially confirming our theoretical predictions and contributing profoundly to the field of quantum gases in complex external potentials.

On the ground state phases in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with weak repulsive interactions

Rajamanickam Ravisankar, Thangarasu Sriraman, Paulsamy Muruganandam

We study the ground-state phases of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with an equal combination of Rashba and Dresselhaus and with Rabi mixing in a quasi-one-dimension setting. We analyze the role of the parameters, namely, spin-orbit and Rabi couplings, and inter- and intra-species interactions in a weak harmonic trap.

Topological phases in spin-orbit-coupled dipolar lattice bosons

H. T. Ng

We study the topological phases in spin-orbit-coupled dipolar bosons in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The magnetic dipolar interactions between atoms give rise to intersite interactions. In the Mott-insulating regime, this system can be described by the quantum XYZ spin model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in a transverse field. We focus on investigating the effect of dipolar interactions on the topological phase. The topological phase can be shown when spin-orbit coupling combines with the repulsive dipolar interaction. We find that the dipolar interaction can broaden the range of parameters of spin-orbit coupling and transverse field for exhibiting the topological phase. The sum of spin correlations between the two nearest-neighboring atoms can be used to indicate the topological phase. This may be useful for detecting topological phases in experiments.

Supersolid phases and collective excitations in two-dimensional Rashba spin-orbit coupled spin-1 condensates

Sanu Kumar Gangwar, Sayan Chatterjee, Rajamanickam Ravisankar +3 more

We investigate the collective excitation spectrum and dynamics of a quasi two-dimensional spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with Rashba type spin-orbit (SO) coupling. Employing Bogoliubov-de-Gennes analysis, we analytically compute the excitation spectra across a wide range of interaction strengths and coupling parameters. By systematically varying the SO and Rabi couplings, we uncover distinct dynamical signatures of quantum phase transitions, including mode softening, the appearance of roton-like minima, and miscibility-driven instabilities in both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interaction regimes. In the antiferromagnetic case, these instabilities lead to a dynamically unstable supersolid phase characterized by the coexistence of density modulation and global phase coherence. To corroborate the analytical predictions, we numerically solve the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations and analyze the dynamical stability of the condensate. Our results provide experimentally accessible signatures for spinor condensates with tunable spin-orbit coupling and demonstrate the rich interplay between spin-dependent interactions and synthetic couplings in nonequilibrium quantum fluids.
