Abstract

We study the decoherence of a spin in a quantum dot due to its hyperfine coupling to a randomly fluctuating bath of nuclear spins. The system is modeled by the central spin model with the spin bath initially being at infinite temperature. We calculate the spectrum and time evolution of the coherence factor using a Monte Carlo sampling of the exact eigenstates obtained via the algebraic Bethe ansatz. The exactness of the obtained eigenstates allows us to study the nonperturbative regime of weak magnetic fields in a full quantum mechanical treatment. In particular, we find a large nondecaying fraction in the zero-field limit. The crossover from strong to weak fields is similar to the decoherence starting from a pure initial bath state treated previously. We compare our results to a simple semiclassical picture [Merkulov et al., Phys. Rev. B 65, 205309 (2002)] and find surprisingly good agreement. Finally, we discuss the effect of weakly coupled spins and show that they will eventually lead to complete decoherence.

Integrability-Based Analysis of the Hyperfine-Interaction-Induced Decoherence in Quantum Dots

Alexandre Faribault, Dirk Schuricht

Using the algebraic Bethe ansatz in conjunction with a simple Monte Carlo sampling technique, we study the problem of the decoherence of a central spin coupled to a nuclear spin bath. We describe in detail the full crossover from strong to weak external magnetic field, a limit where a large nondecaying coherence factor is found. This feature is explained by Bose-Einstein-condensate-like physics which also allows us to argue that the corresponding zero frequency peak would not be broadened by statistical or ensemble averaging.

Hyperfine induced electron spin and entanglement dynamics in double quantum dots: The case of separate baths

B. Erbe, John Schliemann

We consider a system of two strongly coupled electron spins in zero magnetic field, each of which is interacting with an individual bath of nuclear spins via the hyperfine interaction. Applying the long-spin approximation that we introduced in a previous paper [Europhys. Lett. 95, 47009 (2011)] (here each bath is replaced by a single long spin), we numerically study the electron spin and entanglement dynamics. We demonstrate that the decoherence time is scaling with the bath size according to a power law. As expected, the decaying part of the dynamics decreases with increasing bath polarization. However, surprisingly it turns out that, under certain circumstances, combining quantum dots of different geometry to the double dot setup has a very similar effect on the magnitude of the spin decay. Finally, we show that even for a comparatively weak exchange coupling the electron spins can be fully entangled.

Nonperturbative Master Equation Solution of Central Spin Dephasing Dynamics

Edwin Barnes, Łukasz Cywiński, S. Das Sarma

We solve the long-standing central spin problem for a general set of inhomogeneous bath couplings and a large class of initial bath states. We compute the time evolution of the coherence of a central spin coupled to a spin bath by resumming all orders of the time-convolutionless master equation, thus avoiding the need to assume weak coupling to the bath. The fully quantum, non-markovian solution is obtained in the large-bath limit and is valid up to a time scale set by the largest coupling constant. Our result captures the full decoherence of an electron spin qubit coupled to a nuclear spin bath in a GaAs quantum dot for experimentally relevant parameters. In addition, our solution is quite compact and can readily be used to make quantitative predictions for the decoherence process and to guide the design of nuclear state preparation protocols.

Universal dynamics of quantum spin decoherence in a nuclear spin bath

Yi-Ya Tian, Pochung Chen, Daw-Wei Wang

We systematically investigate the universal spin decoherence dynamics of a localized electron in an arbitrary nuclear spin bath, which can even be far away from equilibrium due to the weak nuclear-lattice interaction. We show that the electron spin relaxation dynamics (as well as spin pure dephasing and Hahn echo decay) can always have a universal behavior as long as the initial state is composed of a sufficiently large amount of spin eigenstates. For a given system, the pattern of the universal dynamics depends on the complicated initial condition only via a single parameter, which measures the amount of phase coherence between different spin eigenstates in the initial state. Our results apply even when the number of the involved nuclei is not large and, therefore, provide a solid foundation in the comparison of the theoretical/numerical results to the experimental measurement. As an example, we also show the numerical results for systems of noninteracting spin bath in a zero magnetic field regime and discuss the features of universal decoherent dynamics.

Dynamics and decoherence in the central spin model in the low-field limit

Daniel Stanek, Carsten Raas, Götz Silvester Uhrig

We present a combination of analytic calculations and a powerful numerical method for large spin baths in the low-field limit. The hyperfine interaction between the central spin and the bath is fully captured by the density matrix renormalization group. The adoption of the density matrix renormalization group for the central spin model is presented and a proper method for calculating the real-time evolution at infinite temperature is identified. In addition, we study to which extent a semiclassical model, where a quantum spin-1/2 interacts with a bath of classical Gaussian fluctuations, can capture the physics of the central spin model. The model is treated by average Hamiltonian theory and by numerical simulation.
