Low-energy effective theories of the two-thirds filled Hubbard model on the triangular necklace lattice

C. Janani, Jaime Merino, Ian P. McCulloch +1 more

Motivated by ${\mathrm{Mo}}_{3}{\mathrm{S}}_{7}$(dmit)${}_{3}$, we investigate the Hubbard model on the triangular necklace lattice at two-thirds filling. We show, using second-order perturbation theory, that in the molecular limit, the ground state and the low-energy excitations of this model are identical to those of the spin-one Heisenberg chain. The latter model is known to be in the symmetry-protected topological Haldane phase. Away from this limit we show, on the basis of symmetry arguments and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, that the low-energy physics of the Hubbard model on the triangular necklace lattice at two-thirds filling is captured by the ferromagnetic Hubbard-Kondo lattice chain at half-filling. This is consistent with and strengthens previous claims that both the half-filled ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model and the two-thirds filled Hubbard model on the triangular necklace lattice are also in the Haldane phase. A connection between Hund's rules and Nagaoka's theorem is also discussed.

Symmetry-protected topological phase transition in one-dimensional Kondo lattice and its realization with ultracold atoms

Masaya Nakagawa, Norio Kawakami

We propose that ultracold alkaline-earth-like atoms confined in one-dimensional optical lattice can realize a Kondo lattice model which hosts a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase and an associated quantum phase transition in a controllable manner. The symmetry protection of the phase transition is discussed from two different viewpoints: topological properties related to spatial patterns of Kondo singlets and symmetry eigenvalues of the spin states. We uncover the role of various symmetries in the phase diagram of this system by combining a weak-coupling approach by Abelian bosonization and strong-coupling pictures of ground states. Furthermore, we show that the bosonization approach correctly describes a crossover from a fermionic SPT phase to a bosonic SPT phase and an associated change of protecting symmetries as the charge degrees of freedom are frozen by the Hubbard repulsion.

Detecting symmetry fractionalization in gapped quantum spin liquids by magnetic impurities

Shuangyuan Lu, Yuan-Ming Lu

Abstract We study the Kondo effect of spin-1/2 magnetic impurities in gapped Z2 spin liquids on two-dimensional lattices. We find that if the impurity is placed at a high-symmetry location, a nontrivial spinon fractionalization class of the impurity site symmetry group will necessarily lead to a non-Kramers doublet in the Kondo screening regime, protected by associated crystalline symmetries. This is in sharp contrast to a featureless screening phase in the usual Kondo effect. We demonstrate this symmetry-protected topological degeneracy by an exactly solvable model and by the large-N theory. Based on this effect, we discuss how thermodynamic measurements in the limit of dilute magnetic impurities can be used to detect symmetry fractionalization in gapped Z2 spin liquids.
