Abstract

We argue that a relatively simple model containing only SU(2)-invariant chiral three-spin interactions on a Kagome lattice of S=1/2 spins can give rise to both a gapped and a gapless quantum spin liquid. Our arguments are rooted in a formulation in terms of network models of edge states and are backed up by a careful numerical analysis. For a uniform choice of chirality on the lattice, we realize the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state, i.e. a gapped spin liquid which is identified as the nu=1/2 bosonic Laughlin state. For staggered chiralities, a gapless spin liquid emerges which exhibits gapless spin excitations along lines in momentum space, a feature that we probe by studying quasi-two-dimensional systems of finite width. We thus provide a single, appealingly simple spin model (i) for what is probably the simplest realization of the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state to date, as well as (ii) for a non-Fermi liquid state with lines of gapless SU(2) spin excitations.

Chiral Spin Liquids in Arrays of Spin Chains

Rodrigo G. Pereira

We describe a coupled-chain construction for chiral spin liquids in two-dimensional spin systems. Starting from a one-dimensional zigzag spin chain and imposing SU(2) symmetry in the framework of non-Abelian bosonization, we first show that our approach faithfully describes the low-energy physics of an exactly solvable model with a three-spin interaction. Generalizing the construction to the two-dimensional case, we obtain a theory that incorporates the universal properties of the chiral spin liquid predicted by Kalmeyer and Laughlin: charge-neutral edge states, gapped spin-1/2 bulk excitations, and ground state degeneracy on the torus signalling the topological order of this quantum state. In addition, we show that the chiral spin liquid phase is more easily stabilized in frustrated lattices containing corner-sharing triangles, such as the extended kagome lattice, than in the triangular lattice. Our field theoretical approach invites generalizations to more exotic chiral spin liquids and may be used to assess the existence of the chiral spin liquid as the ground state of specific lattice systems.

Gapless chiral spin liquid from coupled chains on the kagome lattice

Rodrigo G. Pereira, Samuel Bieri

Using a perturbative renormalization group approach, we show that the extended ( J_1-J_2-J_d J 1 − J 2 − J d ) Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice with a staggered chiral interaction ( J_\chi J χ ) can exhibit a gapless chiral quantum spin liquid phase. Within a coupled-chain construction, this phase can be understood as a chiral sliding Luttinger liquid with algebraic decay of spin correlations along the chain directions. We calculate the low-energy properties of this gapless chiral spin liquid using the effective field theory and show that they are compatible with the predictions from parton mean-field theories with symmetry-protected line Fermi surfaces. These results may be relevant to the state observed in the kapellasite material.

Exact chiral spin liquid with stable spin Fermi surface on the kagome lattice

Victor Chua, Hong Yao, Gregory A. Fiete

We study an exactly solvable quantum spin model of Kitaev type on the kagome lattice. We find a rich phase diagram which includes a topological (gapped) chiral spin liquid with gapless chiral edge states, and a gapless chiral spin liquid phase with a spin Fermi surface. The ground state of the current model contains an odd number of electrons per unit cell, which qualitatively distinguishes it from previously studied exactly solvable models with a spin Fermi surface. Moreover, we show that the spin Fermi surface is stable against weak perturbations.

Symmetry-protected non-Fermi liquids, kagome spin liquids, and the chiral Kondo lattice model

Bela Bauer, Brendan P. Keller, Simon Trebst +1 more

The theoretical description of non-Fermi liquids is among the most challenging questions in strongly correlated quantum matter. While there are many experimental candidates for such phases, few examples can be studied using controlled theoretical approaches. Here, we introduce a conceptual perspective to analytically describe the non-Fermi liquid physics of gapless spin liquids arising in a family of two- and three-dimensional kagome models. We first discuss a symmetry-protection mechanism that is responsible for the stability of the gapless phase. We then recast the two-dimensional kagome spin model as a chiral Kondo lattice model that can be tackled analytically using what is in a sense a generalization of coupled-wire constructions. We provide extensive numerical evidence for a gapless spin liquid in the two-dimensional kagome model and discuss generalizations to three dimensions.

Chiral Spin Liquid in a Frustrated Anisotropic Kagome Heisenberg Model

Yin-Chen He, D. N. Sheng, Yan Chen

Kalmeyer-Laughlin (KL) chiral spin liquid (CSL) is a type of quantum spin liquid without time-reversal symmetry, and it is considered as the parent state of an exotic type of superconductor--anyon superconductor. Such an exotic state has been sought for more than twenty years; however, it remains unclear whether it can exist in a realistic system where time-reversal symmetry is breaking (T breaking) spontaneously. By using the density matrix renormalization group, we show that KL CSL exists in a frustrated anisotropic kagome Heisenberg model, which has spontaneous T breaking. We find that our model has two topological degenerate ground states, which exhibit nonvanishing scalar chirality order and are protected by finite excitation gap. Furthermore, we identify this state as KL CSL by the characteristic edge conformal field theory from the entanglement spectrum and the quasiparticles braiding statistics extracted from the modular matrix. We also study how this CSL phase evolves as the system approaches the nearest-neighbor kagome Heisenberg model.
