Characterizing entanglement in pulsed parametric down-conversion using chronocyclic Wigner functions

Abstract

Pulsed parametric down-conversion (PDC) processes generate photon pairs with a rich spectral-temporal structure, which offer an attractive potential for quantum information and communication applications. We investigate the four-dimensional chronocyclic Wigner function ${W}_{\mathrm{PDC}}({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{s}},{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{i}},{\ensuremath{\tau}}_{\mathrm{s}},{\ensuremath{\tau}}_{\mathrm{i}})$ of the PDC state, which naturally lends itself to the pulsed characteristics of these states. From this function we derive the conditioned time-bandwidth product of one of the pair photons, a quantity which not only is a valid measure of entanglement between the PDC photons but also allows us to highlight a remarkable link between the discrete- and continuous-variable descriptions of PDC. We numerically analyze PDC processes with different conditions to demonstrate the versatility of our approach, which is applicable to a large number of current PDC sources.

Chronocyclic Wigner function of ultrafast time-frequency entangled parametric downconversion states

Benjamin Brecht, Christine Silberhorn

As of today, ultrafast waveguided parametric downconversion (PDC) sources are a well-established tool for the flexible generation of a large variety of quantum states. In the PDC process, the intrinsic broadband nature of the pump pulses gets translated into a rich spectral-temporal pulse-mode structure of the generated photon states [1]. This structure has already driven elaborate theoretical considerations, which aim for a complete understanding of the PDC process.

Theory of filtered type-II parametric down-conversion: A method for single-mode EPR-entanglement generation

Andreas Christ, Cosmo Lupo, Matthias Reichelt +2 more

Parametric down-conversion (PDC) forms one of the basic building blocks for quantum optical experiments. However, the intrinsic multimode spectral-temporal structure of pulsed PDC often poses a severe hindrance for the direct implementation of the heralding of pure single photon states or, for example, continuous-variable entanglement distillation experiments. To get rid of multimode effects narrowband frequency filtering is frequently applied to achieve a single-mode behaviour. To date, the theoretical models of filtered PDC, however, only account for filtering in the low gain regime, where only a few photon-pairs are emitted at any single point in time. In this paper we extend these theoretical descriptions and present a rigorous theoretical model for filtered type-II PDC. Our theoretical investigations reveal that filtering a multimode type-II PDC state, followed by a careful optimization of the measurement basis, effectively achieves a single-mode behaviour and further enables the generation of single-mode EPR-entanglement. Considering the ever increasing brightness of PDC sources our developed theoretical framework, enables the accurate description of filtered PDC in quantum optical experiments.

Spectral properties of transverse Laguerre-Gauss modes in parametric down-conversion

Carlos Sevilla-Gutiérrez, Varun Raj Kaipalath, Baghdasar Baghdasaryan +3 more

The first color photos of the parametric down-conversion (PDC) emission cone illustrate the correlation of longitudinal and transverse momentum in the process, i.e., wavelength-dependent emission angles of PDC photons. However, current experiments and applications are more conveniently described in terms of discrete mode sets, with the most suitable choice depending on the propagation symmetries of the experimental setting. Remarkably, despite the fact that experiments with PDC sources are becoming ever more demanding, e.g., in terms of brightness or state fidelity, a description of spectral-spatial coupling in parametric down-conversion for the case of discrete modal decompositions remains elusive. We present a comprehensive study, in theory and experiment, of the spectral dependence of the transverse Laguerre-Gauss modes in parametric down-conversion. Moreover, we show how the spectral and spatial coupling can be harnessed to tune the purity of the well-known orbital angular momentum entanglement. This paper has implications for efficient collection of entangled photons in a transverse single mode, quantum imaging, and engineering pure states for high-dimensional quantum information processing. Biphoton wave packets in parametric down-conversion: Spectral and temporal structure and degree of entanglement

J. M. Mikhailova, P. A. Volkov, Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov

We investigate spectral and temporal features and entanglement of biphoton wave packets formed in spontaneous parametric down-conversion with a pulsed laser pump. The degree of entanglement is characterized by the experimentally measurable parameter $R$ defined as the ratio of the coincidence and single-particle spectral widths. In the frequency representation, this parameter is found as a function of the pump-pulse duration $\ensuremath{\tau}$. The function $R(\ensuremath{\tau})$ is shown to have a minimum and even in the minimum, at rather natural conditions, the degree of entanglement is found to be very high $({R}_{\mathrm{min}}=73)$. The Schmidt number $K$ is found analytically for both short and long pump pulses and interpolated for arbitrary pulse durations. All functional dependences of $R$ and $K$ are found to be identical and numerical coefficients are found to be rather close. Two-time temporal wave function of a biphoton state is investigated in detail, and a rather significant difference between the cases of short and long pump pulses is found to occur. In the case of long pulses, the temporal parameter ${R}_{t}$ (defined as the ratio of durations of the single-particle and coincidence signals) is shown to be very close to the Schmidt number $K$.

Properties of the spatial Wigner function of entangled photon pairs

Noelia Gonzalez, Gabriel Molina‐Terriza, Juan P. Torres

In this paper we analyze some important characteristics of the spatial Wigner function of entangled photon pairs. We show that the Wigner description of quantum states that live in the infinite-dimensional space-momentum degree of freedom proves to be particularly useful. We propose an experimental configuration that can be used to retrieve the Wigner function of paired photons entangled in the spatial degree of freedom. In particular, it allows the full characterization of the paired photons emitted from a spontaneous parametric down-conversion source.
