Model of coherent optical spin manipulation through hot trion states in p-doped InAs/GaAs quantum dots

Abstract

A new generalised group-theoretical approach, based on master Maxwell-pseudospin equations, is proposed to explain recently observed enhanced circular dichroism in the excited state emission from p-doped quantum dot ensembles under resonant circularly polarised excitation into hot trion states, herein referred to as "spin-filtering effect". The theory agrees remarkably well with polarised time-resolved photoluminescence experiments, yielding largely unknown inter- and intra-shell spin relaxation time scales. This approach allows to predict optimum pulse parameters for control of spin dynamics, which will enable exploitation of the effect in all-optical spin-based quantum technologies.

Coherent optical manipulation of a single spin state in a charged quantum dot: theory and modelling

Gabriela M. Slavcheva

The optically-induced coherent spin dynamics in a charged quantum dot (QD) is studied theoretically using a new dynamical model for rigorous description of circularly polarized ultrashort optical pulse resonant interactions with the electron-trion system. Generalized pseudospin master equation is derived for description of the time evolution of spin coherences and spin populations in terms of the real state pseudospin (coherence) vector including dissipation in the system through spin relaxation processes. The equation is solved in the time domain self-consistently with the vector Maxwell equations for the optical wave propagation coupled to it via macroscopic medium polarization. Using the model the long-lived electron spin coherence left behind a single resonant ultrashort optical excitation of the electron-trion transition in a charged QD is simulated in the lowand high-intensity Rabi oscillations regime. Signatures of the polarized photoluminescence (PL) resulting from the numerical simulations, such as the appearance of a second echo pulse after the excitation and a characteristic PL trace shape, specific for initial spin-up orientation, are discussed for realization of high-fidelity schemes for coherent readout of a single spin polarization state.

All-Optical Coherent Control of Spin Dynamics in Semiconductor Quantum Dots

Gabriela M. Slavcheva, Ortwin G. Hess

A new model for rigorous theoretical description of circularly (elliptically) polarized ultrashort optical pulse interactions with singly charged quantum dots embedded in semiconductor optical waveguides and microcavities is proposed. The method is based on self-consistent solution in the time domain of the vector Maxwell equations coupled via microscopic polarization to the coherent time-evolution equations of a discrete N-level quantum system in terms of the real pseudospin (coherence) vector. The model is applied to a 4-level system describing the optical dipole transitions of the trion state in a singly charged quantum dot. Selective optical excitation of specific spin states by predefined helicity of the optical field and an onset of self-induced transparency and polarized soliton formation in the nonlinear regime are numerically demonstrated

Optical initialization and dynamics of spin in a remotely doped quantum well

Thomas A. Kennedy, Andrew Shabaev, Michael Scheibner +3 more

The excitation of electron spin polarization and coherence by picosecond light pulses and their dynamics in a wide remotely doped quantum well are studied theoretically and experimentally. Assuming that all electrons in the quantum well are localized, the theory considers the resonant interaction of light pulses with the four-level system formed by the electron spins of the ground state and the hole spins of the trion excited state. The theory describes the effects of spontaneous emission, a transverse magnetic field and hole spin relaxation on the dynamics detected by the Kerr rotation of a probe pulse. Time resolved Kerr rotation experiments were carried out on a remotely doped $14\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$ GaAs quantum well in the frequency range of optical transitions to the heavy hole (HH) trion and to the light-hole (LH) trion degenerate with the HH exciton. The experiments on the resonant excitation of the HH trion show a very slow heavy hole spin relaxation and, consequently, a weak electron spin polarization after the trion relaxation. In contrast, the resonant excitation of the LH trion/HH exciton results in a fast hole spin relaxation that increases electron spin polarization.

Dynamical Model for Coherent Optical Control of a Single Confined Spin

Gabriela M. Slavcheva

We extend [1] our new dynamical model [2,3] for resonant coherent circularly polarized optical pulse interactions with charged semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) to include dissipation in the system through the spin relaxation dynamics. A generalized pseudospin master equation is derived for description of the optically-induced time evolution of spin coherences and spin populations in terms of the real state pseudospin (coherence) vector. The equation is solved self-consistently with the vector Maxwell equations for the optical wave propagation coupled via macroscopic medium polarization. Using the model we demonstrate numerically coherent readout of a single spin polarization state exploiting the high-intensity Rabi oscillations regime. We show that coherent spin-polarization control can be achieved by varying the excitation intensity through the pulse area which allows for differentiation between the time traces of the polarized photoluminescence, thus enabling high-fidelity schemes for single spin detection. Longest-lived spin coherence is achieved for odd multiples of π-excitations.

Dynamical model for coherent optical manipulation of a single spin state in a charged quantum dot

Exciton spin manipulation in In As ∕ Ga As quantum dots: Exchange interaction and magnetic field effects

Mathieu Sénès, Bernhard Urbaszek, X. Marie +6 more

We report quantum beat phenomena between different polarization states in InAs quantum dots, observed in time-resolved photoluminescence and transient dichroism measurements. The polarization of the emitted light can be changed from linear to circular by applying a small magnetic field. Following quasiresonant excitation the electron and hole spin states remain stable during the exciton lifetime, independent of the applied magnetic field. We show that the exciton spin coherence is partially preserved in the energy relaxation process. These experiments enable us to measure the anisotropic exchange energy $\ensuremath{\Delta}{E}_{XY}$ and the exciton $g$ factor. We find $\ensuremath{\Delta}{E}_{XY}\ensuremath{\simeq}30\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{eV}$ and $g\ensuremath{\simeq}2.5$ for the quantum dot excitons.
