A Minimal Uncertainty Product for One Dimensional Semiclassical Wave Packets

Abstract

Although real, normalized Gaussian wave packets minimize the product of position and momentum uncertainties, generic complex normalized Gaussian wave packets do not. We prove they minimize an alternative product of uncertainties that correspond to variables that are phase space rotations of position and momentum.

Dynamics of uncertainties for bound one-dimensional semiclassical wave packets

Predrag Punoševac, Sam L. Robinson

We study the time evolution of the uncertainties Δx and Δp in position and momentum, respectively, associated with the semiclassical propagation of certain Gaussian initial states. We show that these quantities behave generically as P1(t)+tP2(t), where P1 and P2 are periodic in time with period that of an underlying classical trajectory. We also show that, despite the overall (generically quadratic) growth in time, the uncertainty product ΔxΔp achieves its minimum of ħ/2 at arbitrarily large times.

Generalized Gaussian wave packet dynamics

Daniel Huber, Eric J. Heller

We propose an extension of the semiclassical Gaussian wave packet dynamics to eliminate the three main restrictions of this method. The first restriction is that the wave packet is forced to remain Gaussian. This is correct only for quadratic, linear, or constant potentials. The second restriction is that the method is, in general, not able to treat most classically forbidden processes. The third restriction is that the norm is conserved only for Gaussian wave packets. For a superposition of Gaussians this is no longer true. We can eliminate these restrictions by an extension of the method into complex phase space, keeping time real.

Relationships of Wave Packet Variances

Dick H. Holze, William T. Scott

Some results of interest in quantum measurement theory are derived from a consideration of a collision between two one-dimensional Gaussian wave packets. Relationships are found between the momentum and position uncertainties of the packets before and after the collision. It is shown that the coordinates of a poorly defined packet can be better defined by causing it to collide with a well-defined packet. A classical analog is presented in which the same results are obtained.

The Lévy wave packet and fractional uncertainty relations

Zi-Xuan Li, Xiao-Dong Li, Towe Wang

This work revisits the debate on fractional uncertainty relations that arose a decade ago and tries to settle it. After a careful study of the position-momentum uncertainty product of the Lévy wave packet, a novel lower bound is proposed for uncertainty relations in fractional quantum mechanics. This bound is nearly linear in the Lévy index and is satisfied by exact, calculable solutions available in the literature.

Dynamics of uncertainties for one-dimensional semiclassical wave packets: Isochronicity, scattering, and capture

Predrag Punoševac, Sam L. Robinson

We complete our study on the uncertainties in position and momentum associated with the semiclassical Hagedorn wave packets by first filling in a technical gap in the dynamics of bound states for isochronous potentials. We then consider scattered states and show that, if the packet is reflected from the potential or transmitted through a symmetric potential, then a minimal uncertainty “initial” state cannot in general lead to a “final” state with minimal uncertainty, and we give an explicit relationship for the difference in terms of a characteristic time associated with classical trajectories. We also characterize the behavior of the uncertainty product in the case where the underlying classical dynamics lead to capture by the potential.

One-dimensional quantum scattering in an eigendifferential basis

Lawrence L. Halcomb, D. J. Diestler

The one–dimensional problem of a Gaussian wave packet scattering from a square barrier is solved numerically using momentum eigendifferentials, which are normalized superpositions of momentum eigenkets.
