Different roles of Zn$^{2+}$ and Li$^{+}$ impurities in the CuO$_2$ plane in undoped cuprate compounds

Abstract

A planar Mott insulator with easy plane Néel order can be mapped onto a Gutzwiller-projected spin Hall state. The in-plane substitution of Zn$^{2+}$ and Li$^{+}$ for Cu$^{2+}$ brings zero modes around the spin vacancy. The Gutzwiller projection precludes single particle excitations, however, preserves the zero modes which have a local spin moment for Zn$^{2+}$ and a local charged hole for Li$^{+}$, respectively. While the local spin moment for Zn$^{2+}$ is screened by the long-range spin correlations, the active charge degree of freedom for Li$^{+}$ impurity twists the spin background with long ranged disturbances. This proposal explains the very different roles of the Zn$^{2+}$ and Li$^{+}$ impurities on the magnetic perturbations in the CuO$_2$ plane in the undoped cuprate compounds.

Exact diagonalization study of the effects of Zn and Ni impurities on the pseudogap of underdoped cuprate high-Tc superconductors

Jiří Vašátko, D. Munzar

The influence of Zn and Ni impurities on the normal-state pseudogap of underdoped $\text{high-}{T}_{c}$ cuprate superconductors is studied using exact diagonalization of effective $t\ensuremath{-}J\text{-like}$ Hamiltonians describing low energy electronic excitations of the ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$ plane with some of the copper ions replaced with Zn/Ni. The Ni case Hamiltonian has been obtained by a sequence of approximations from a more complete model involving Cu $3d$, Ni $3d$, and O $2p$ orbitals. Our main findings are: (i) The width ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{\mathrm{PG}}$ of the pseudogap occurring in the many body density of states, and manifesting itself also in the $c\text{-axis}$ infrared conductivity, decreases with increasing Zn concentration as a consequence of a suppression of short range spin correlations. (ii) In the case of one hole and one Ni impurity, the hole is---for realistic values of the model parameters---weakly bound to the Ni site. This causes a slight increase of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{\mathrm{PG}}$ with respect to the pure case. (iii) Based on this result and further results for 1--2 holes and 1--2 Ni impurities, we suggest that in the real Ni substituted ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$ plane ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{\mathrm{PG}}$ is larger than in the pure case due to the binding of the doped holes to the Ni sites and effective underdoping. Our findings clarify the trends observed in the $c\text{-axis}$ infrared conductivity data of Zn and Ni substituted (Sm,Nd)${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{7\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}}$ crystals.

Li-Induced Spin and Charge Excitations in a Spin Ladder

Andreas Martin Läuchli, Didier Poilblanc, Thomas Maurice Rice +1 more

A lithium dopant in a cuprate spin ladder acts as a vacant (nonmagnetic) site accompanied by an extra hole bound by a Coulomb potential. We find that, although the undoped ladder spin gap is not essentially altered by Li doping, a dopant-magnon bound state appears just below the gap. Contrary to Zn-doped ladders, the spin liquid character of a Li-doped ladder should be robust against antiferromagnetism. We give a possible explanation for the similarity of Zn and Li dopants in underdoped cuprates and propose experimental tests.

The effects of Zn impurity on the properties of doped cuprates in the normal state

Yun Song

We study the interplay of quantum impurity, and collective spinon and holon dynamics in Zn doped high-T$_c$ cuprates in the normal state. The two-dimensional t-t$^{\prime}$-J models with one and a small amount of Zn impurity are investigated within a numerical method based on the double-time Green function theory. We study the inhomogeneities of holon density and antiferromagnetic correlation background in cases with different Zn concentrations, and obtain that doped holes tend to assemble around the Zn impurity with their mobility being reduced. Therefore a bound state of holon is formed around the nonmagnetic Zn impurity with the effect helping Zn to introduce local antiferromagnetism around itself. The incommensurate peaks we obtained in the spin structure factor indicate that Zn impurities have effects on mixing the q=($π$, $π$) and q=0 components in spin excitations.

Local spin magnetization around the Zn ion which is doped in the CuO2 plane

Zlata Kovačević

The local static spin susceptibility at neighbor sites from vacant Cu in the CuO 2 plane was obtained. Calculations were performed using one of the variants of the memory function method. Charge-transfer and spin-flip correlation functions were expressed in the framework of the T-matrix formalism in terms of the corresponding Green functions for the ideal t-J model on the square lattice.

Impurity effects in coupled-ladder BiCu2PO6 studied by NMR and quantum Monte Carlo simulations

Libu K. Alexander, Julien Bobroff, A. V. Mahajan +3 more

We present a $^{31}\text{P}$ NMR study of the coupled spin $\frac{1}{2}$ ladder compound ${\text{BiCu}}_{2}{\text{PO}}_{6}$. In the pure material, intrinsic susceptibility, and dynamics show a spin gap of about $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\approx}35--40\text{ }\text{K}$. Substitution of nonmagnetic Zn or magnetic Ni impurity at Cu site induces a staggered magnetization which results in a broadening of the $^{31}\text{P}$ NMR line while susceptibility far from the defects is unaffected. The effect of Ni on the NMR line broadening is twice that of Zn, which is consistent with quantum Monte Carlo calculations assuming that Ni couples ferromagnetically to its adjacent Cu. The induced moment follows a $1/T$ temperature dependence due to the Curie-type development of the moment amplitude while its extension saturates and does not depend on impurity content or nature. This allow us to verify the generically expected scenario for impurity doping and to extend it to magnetic impurity case: in an antiferromagnetically correlated low-dimensional spin system with antiferromagnetic correlations, any type of impurity induces a staggered moment at low temperature, whose extension is not linked to the impurity nature but to the intrinsic physics at play in the undoped pure system, from one-dimensional to two-dimensional systems.

Valence bond solid order near impurities in two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets

Max A. Metlitski, Subir Sachdev A

Recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments on underdoped cuprates have displayed modulations in the local electronic density of states, which are centered on a Cu-O-Cu bond [Kohsaka et al., Science 315, 1380 (2007)]. As a paradigm of the pinning of such bond-centered ordering in strongly correlated systems, we present the theory of valence bond solid (VBS) correlations near a single impurity in a square lattice antiferromagnet. The antiferromagnet is assumed to be in the vicinity of a quantum transition from a magnetically ordered N\'eel state to a spin-gap state with long-range VBS order. We identify two distinct classes of impurities: (i) local modulation in the exchange constants and (ii) a missing or additional spin, for which the impurity perturbation is represented by an uncompensated Berry phase. The ``boundary'' critical theory for these classes is developed. In the second class, we find a VBS pinwheel around the impurity, accompanied by a suppression in the VBS susceptibility. Implications for numerical studies of quantum antiferromagnets and for STM experiments on the cuprates are noted.
