Interaction-induced coherence among polar bosons stored in triple-well potentials

Abstract

We study first-order spatial coherence for interacting polar bosons trapped in triple-well potentials. It is argued that besides the well-known coherence produced by couplings related to tunneling between the sites, there exists a nonlocal coherence predominantly determined by intersite interactions, which prevails between the outer sites of the triple well when their total filling is odd. We find that the nonlocal interaction-induced coherence originates from the superposition of degenerate many-body states in symmetric triple wells, and demonstrate its robustness against perturbations due to various tunneling mechanisms and thermal fluctuations.

The impact of spatial correlation on the tunneling dynamics of few-boson mixtures in a combined triple well and harmonic trap

Lushuai Cao, Ioannis Brouzos, B. Chatterjee +1 more

We investigate the tunneling properties of a two-species few-boson mixture in a one-dimensional triple well and harmonic trap. The mixture is prepared in an initial state with a strong spatial correlation for one species and complete localization of the other species. We observe a correlation-induced tunneling process in the weak interspecies interaction regime. The onset of the interspecies interaction disturbs the spatial correlations of one species and induces a tunneling process between the correlated wells. The corresponding tunneling properties can be controlled by the spatial correlations with an underlying mechanism that is inherently different from the well-known resonant tunneling process. We also observe and analyze the correlated tunneling of both species in the intermediate interspecies interaction regime and the tunneling via higher band states for strong interactions.

Role of anisotropy in dipolar bosons in triple-well potentials

Albert Gallemí, M. Guilleumas, R. Mayol +1 more

Mesoscopic samples of polarized dipolar atoms confined in three spatially separated traps conform an extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian in which different quantum phases appear depending on the competition between tunneling, on-site, and long-range intersite dipole-dipole interactions. Here, by choosing an appropriate configuration of triple wells, we analyze the role played by the anisotropic character inherent to the dipolar interaction in the phase diagram of the system. We further characterize the different phases as well as their boundaries by means of their entanglement properties.

Interacting bosons in a double-well potential : localization regime

Nicolas Rougerie, Dominique Spehner

We study the ground state of a large bosonic system trapped in a symmetric double-well potential, letting the distance between the two wells increase to infinity with the number of particles. In this context, one should expect an interaction-driven transition between a delocalized state (particles are independent and all live in both wells) and a localized state (particles are correlated, half of them live in each well). We start from the full many-body Schr{ö}dinger Hamiltonian in a large-filling situation where the on-site interaction and kinetic energies are comparable. When tunneling is negligible against interaction energy, we prove a localization estimate showing that the particle number fluctuations in each well are strongly suppressed. The modes in which the particles condense are minimizers of nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger-type functionals.

Interaction-driven interband tunneling of bosons in the triple well

Lushuai Cao, Ioannis Brouzos, Sascha Zöllner +1 more

We study the tunneling of a small ensemble of strongly repulsive bosons in a one-dimensional (1D) triple-well potential. The usual treatment within the single-band approximation suggests a suppression of tunneling in the strong-interaction regime. However, we show that several windows of enhanced tunneling are opened in this regime. This enhanced tunneling results from higher band contributions, and has the character of interband tunneling. It can give rise to various tunneling processes, such as single-boson tunneling and two-boson correlated tunneling of the ensemble of bosons, and is robust against deformations of the triple-well potential. We introduce a basis of generalized number states, including all contributing bands, to explain the interband tunneling, and demonstrate various processes of interband tunneling and its robustness by numerically exact calculation.

Mesoscopic Ensembles of Polar Bosons in Triple-Well Potentials

Thierry Lahaye, Tilman Pfau, Luis Santos

Mesoscopic dipolar Bose gases in triple-well potentials offer a minimal system for the analysis of the nonlocal character of the dipolar interaction. We show that this nonlocal character may be clearly revealed by a variety of possible ground-state phases. In addition, an appropriate control of short-range and dipolar interactions may lead to novel scenarios for the dynamics of polar bosons in lattices, including the dynamical creation of mesoscopic quantum superpositions, which may be employed in the design of Heisenberg-limited atom interferometers.

Coherent dynamics in a dual-coupling spin-boson model

Leonard Ruocco

We study the dynamics of a particle tunneling between the ground states of a symmetric double potential well system, in the presence of simultaneous diagonal and non-diagonal couplings to an Ohmic oscillator bath. We use the noninteracting-blip approximation to investigate coherence effects across a wide range of system-environment coupling strengths at physiological temperatures. We show how the presence of a non-diagonal coupling mechanism significantly alters the dynamics of the tunneling particle, producing coherent oscillations despite strong thermal fluctuations in the environment. Fluctuations in both the particle's polarization, as well as tunneling energies, lead to competing influences on the coherent nature of tunneling particle dynamics, with non-diagonal couplings introducing a relatively long-lived oscillatory mode in an otherwise incoherent setting.
