Mesoscopic Ensembles of Polar Bosons in Triple-Well Potentials

Abstract

Mesoscopic dipolar Bose gases in triple-well potentials offer a minimal system for the analysis of the nonlocal character of the dipolar interaction. We show that this nonlocal character may be clearly revealed by a variety of possible ground-state phases. In addition, an appropriate control of short-range and dipolar interactions may lead to novel scenarios for the dynamics of polar bosons in lattices, including the dynamical creation of mesoscopic quantum superpositions, which may be employed in the design of Heisenberg-limited atom interferometers.

Role of anisotropy in dipolar bosons in triple-well potentials

Albert Gallemí, M. Guilleumas, R. Mayol +1 more

Mesoscopic samples of polarized dipolar atoms confined in three spatially separated traps conform an extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian in which different quantum phases appear depending on the competition between tunneling, on-site, and long-range intersite dipole-dipole interactions. Here, by choosing an appropriate configuration of triple wells, we analyze the role played by the anisotropic character inherent to the dipolar interaction in the phase diagram of the system. We further characterize the different phases as well as their boundaries by means of their entanglement properties.

Mean-field description of dipolar bosons in triple-well potentials

D Peter, Krzysztof Pawłowski, Tilman Pfau +1 more

We investigate the ground-state properties of a polarized dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate trapped in a triple-well potential. By solving the dipolar Gross–Pitaevskii equation numerically for different geometries we identify states which reveal the non-local character of the interaction. Depending on the strength of the contact and dipolar interaction we depict the stable and unstable regions in parameter space.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in triple-well potentials

Rüdiger Fortanier, Damir Zajec, Jörg Main

Abstract. Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in triple-well potentials are well-suited model systems for periodic optical potentials with important contributions of the non-local and anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction, which show a variety of effects such as self-organisation and formation of patterns. We address here a macroscopic sample of dipolar bosons in the mean-field limit. This work is based on the Gross-Pitaevskii description of dipolar condensates in triple-well potentials by Peter et al 2012 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 45 225302. Our analysis goes beyond the calculation of ground states presented there and clarifies the role of excited and metastable states in such systems. In particular, we find the formation of phases originating from the interplay of several states with distinct stability properties. As some of the phases are formed by metastable states special attention is paid to the characteristics of phase transitions in real-time and the dynamical stabilisation of the condensate.

Ultracold dipolar few-boson ensembles in a triple-well trap

B. Chatterjee, Ioannis Brouzos, Lushuai Cao +1 more

We investigate the ground state properties and tunneling dynamics of ultracold dipolar bosons in a one dimensional triple well trap from a few-body ab-initio perspective. Our focus is primarily on the distinctive features of dipolar bosons compared to the contact interacting bosons. Formation of intra-well localization is observed for very strong dipolar interaction. General population rearangement as well as fragmentation and localization effects have been found, depending strongly on the particle number. The energy spectrum for two particles exhibits avoided crossings that lead to several distinct resonances involving different bands, i.e. to an inter-band resonant tunneling dynamics. The corresponding mechanisms are investigated by studying among others the pair-probability and performing an eigenstate analysis.

Stability of Dark Solitons in Three Dimensional Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

Rejish Nath, P. Pedri, Luis Santos

The dynamical stability of dark solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates is studied. For standard short-range interacting condensates, dark solitons are unstable against transverse excitations in two and three dimensions. On the contrary, due to its nonlocal character, the dipolar interaction allows for stable 3D stationary dark solitons, opening a qualitatively novel scenario in nonlinear atom optics. We discuss in detail the conditions to achieve this stability, which demand the use of an additional optical lattice, and the stability regimes.
