Abstract

We carry out an extensive study of the phase diagrams of the extended Bose Hubbard model, with a mean filling of one boson per site, in one dimension by using the density matrix renormalization group and show that it contains Superfluid (SF), Mott-insulator (MI), density-wave (DW) and Haldane-insulator (HI) phases. We show that the critical exponents and central charges for the HI-DW, MI-HI and SF-MI transitions are consistent with those for models in the two-dimensional Ising, Gaussian, and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) universality classes, respectively; and we suggest that the SF-HI transition may be more exotic than a simple BKT transition. We show explicitly that different boundary conditions lead to different phase diagrams.

Phases, transitions, and patterns in the one-dimensional Extended Bose-Hubbard model

We carry out an extensive study of the phase diagram of the extended Bose Hubbard model, with a mean filling of one boson per site, in one dimension by using the density matrix renormalization group and show that it can have Superfluid (SF), Mott-insulator (MI), density-wave (DW) and Haldane-insulator (HI) phases depending on the precise value of filling and how edge states are handled. We show that the critical exponents and central charge for the HI-DW, MI-HI and SF-MI transitions are consistent with those for models in the two-dimensional Ising, Gaussian, and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) universality classes, respectively; and we suggest that the SF-HI transition may be more exotic than a simple BKT transition.

Superfluid, Mott-insulator, and mass-density-wave phases in the one-dimensional extended Bose-Hubbard model

Ramesh V. Pai, Rahul Anil Pandit

We use the finite-size, density-matrix-renormalization-group (FSDMRG) method to obtain the phase diagram of the one-dimensional $(d=1)$ extended Bose-Hubbard model for density $\ensuremath{\rho}=1$ in the $U\ensuremath{-}V$ plane, where $U$ and $V$ are, respectively, onsite and nearest-neighbor interactions. The phase diagram comprises three phases: superfluid (SF), Mott insulator (MI), and mass-density-wave (MDW). For small values of $U$ and $V$, we get a reentrant SF-MI-SF phase transition. For intermediate values of interactions the SF phase is sandwiched between MI and MDW phases with continuous SF-MI and SF-MDW transitions. We show, by a detailed, finite-size scaling analysis, that the MI-SF transition is of Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type whereas the MDW-SF transition has both KT and two-dimensional Ising characters. For large values of $U$ and $V$ we get a direct, first-order, MI-MDW transition. The MI-SF, MDW-SF, and MI-MDW phase boundaries join at a bicritical point at $(U,V)=(8.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05,4.75\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05)$.

Quantum phase transitions in the dimerized extended Bose-Hubbard model

K. Sugimoto, Satoshi Ejima, Florian Lange +1 more

We present an unbiased numerical density-matrix renormalization group study of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model supplemented by nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction and bond dimerization. It places the emphasis on the determination of the ground-state phase diagram and shows that, besides dimerized Mott and density-wave insulating phases, an intermediate symmetry-protected topological Haldane insulator emerges at weak Coulomb interactions for filling factor one, which disappears, however, when the dimerization becomes too large. Analyzing the critical behavior of the model, we prove that the phase boundaries of the Haldane phase to Mott insulator and density-wave states belong to the Gaussian and Ising universality classes with central charges $c=1$ and $c=1/2$, respectively, and merge in a tricritical point. Interestingly we can demonstrate a direct Ising quantum phase transition between the dimerized Mott and density-wave phases above the tricritical point. The corresponding transition line terminates at a critical end point that belongs to the universality class of the dilute Ising model with $c=7/10$. At even stronger Coulomb interactions the transition becomes first order.

One-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with pure three-body interactions

Tomasz Sowiński

Abstract The extended Bose-Hubbard model with pure three-body local interactions is studied using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group approach. The shapes of the first two insulating lobes are discussed, and the values of the critical tunneling for which the system undergoes the quantum phase transition from insulating to superfluid phase are predicted. It is shown that stability of insulating phases, in contrast to the standard Bose-Hubbard model, is enhanced for larger fillings. It is also shown that, on the tip of the boundary of the insulating phase, the model under consideration belongs to the Berenzinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class.

Quantum Phase Analysis of Extended Bose-Hubbard Model

Manoranjan Kumar, Sujit Sarkar, S. Ramasesha

We have obtained the quantum phase diagram of one dimensional extended Bose-Hubbard model using the density-matrix renormalization group and Abelian bosonization methods for different commensurabilities. We describe the nature of different quantum phases at the charge degeneracy point. We find a direct phase transition from Mott insulating phase to superconducting phase for integer band fillings of bosons. We predict explicitly the presence of two kinds of repulsive Luttinger liquid phases, apart from the charge density wave and superconducting phases for half-integer band fillings. Our study reveals that extended range interactions are necessary to get the correct phase boundary of an one-dimensional interacting bosons system.

Emergent Phases in an Extended Bose-Hubbard Model with Three-body On-site Interaction

Henry Otobrise, Kunle Adegoke

We study the Extended Bose-Hubbard Model with a three-body onsite interaction. Using an exact diagonalization method and a variational Matrix Product States algorithm, \emph{Alps mps-optim}, we compute and analyse the energy charge gap and finite system correlation functions to obtain the phase boundaries and determine the phases and phase transitions of the model. For \mbox{$\frac{V}{U} = 0.6$} and \mbox{$\frac{W}{U} = 0$}, we observed the emergence of the Haldane insulator (HI) phase at the tip of the \mbox{$ρ= 1$} charge density wave (CDW) lobe and for \mbox{$\frac{V}{U} = 0.6$} and \mbox{$\frac{W}{U} = 1$}, we observed the emergence of the supersolid (SS) phase at the tip of the \mbox{$ρ= 1/2$} charge density wave (CDW) lobe. We also noticed that the effect of the inclusion of both the three-body onsite and nearest neighbor interactions on the phase diagram of the model for filling factor \mbox{$ρ= 2$} is to stabilize the Mott insulator (MI) phase such that the system remains in the MI phase for all values of $\frac{V}{U}$.
