Abstract

An approach to generating the entangled photonic states $|{\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{1},{\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{2}\ensuremath{\rangle}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}|{\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{2},{\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{1}\ensuremath{\rangle}$ from two arbitrary states $|{\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{1}\ensuremath{\rangle}$ and $|{\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{2}\ensuremath{\rangle}$ is proposed. The protocol is implemented by the conditionally induced beam-splitter coupling, which leads to the selective swapping between two photonic modes. Such coupling occurs in a quantum system prepared in the superposition of two ground states with only one of them being involved in the swapping. All the entangled states in the category, such as entangled pairs of coherent states or Fock states (NOON states), can be efficiently produced in the same way by this method.

Conditional generation of arbitrary multimode entangled states of light with linear optics

Jaromı́r Fiurášek, Serge Massar, Nicolas J. Cerf

We propose a universal scheme for the probabilistic generation of an arbitrary multimode entangled state of light with finite expansion in Fock basis. The suggested setup involves passive linear optics, single-photon sources, strong coherent laser beams, and photodetectors with single-photon resolution. The efficiency of this setup may be greatly enhanced if, in addition, a quantum memory is available.

Conditional preparation of X (2) macroscopic entangled states

Sergey A. Podoshvedov

Two experimental arrangements consisting of coupled spontaneous parametric down-converters with type-I phase matching pumped simultaneously by a powerful optical field in a coherent state through a balanced beam splitter and linear optical elements are proposed for conditional preparation of macroscopic entangled states in output pumping modes of the studied system. Successful generation of the macroscopic entangled state in the pumping modes is unambiguously heralded by coincident detection of two photons in the generated signal and idler modes of the system. We calculate the amount of entanglement and probabilities of successfully observing the X (2) macroscopic entangled states in the total wavefunction. We show that the proposed schemes can be used to obtain a new type of macroscopic entangled states.

Conditional generation ofN-photon entangled states of light

Jaromı́r Fiurášek

We propose a scheme for conditional generation of two-mode N-photon path-entangled states of traveling light field. These states may find applications in quantum optical lithography and they may be used to improve the sensitivity of interferometric measurements. Our method requires only single-photon sources, linear optics (beam splitters and phase shifters), and photodetectors with single-photon sensitivity.

Obtaining entangled photons from fully mixed states using beam splitters

Hari Krishnan S. V., Shubhrangshu Dasgupta

Preparation of entangled states of photons are useful for quantum computing and communication. In this paper, we present a simplistic protocol of entanglement generation using beam splitters with suitable reflectivity. The photons in an initial state with fully classical probability distribution pass through an optical network, made up of sequential beam splitters and are prepared in maximally entangled states. We also present the detailed theoretical analysis of entangled state generation, for an arbitrary number of photons, fed through the input ports of the beam splitters with equal probability.

Generation of an entangled four-photonWstate

Xu‐Bo Zou, K. Pahlke, Wolfgang M. Mathis

We present a scheme to produce an entangled four-photon W state by using linear optical elements. The symmetrical setup of linear optical elements consists of four beam splitters, four polarization beam splitters, and four mirrors. A photon Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pair and two single photons are required as the input modes. The projection on the W state can be made by a four-photon coincidence measurement. Further, we show that by means of a horizontally oriented polarizer in front of one detector, the W state of three photons can be generated.

Experimental entanglement generation using multiport beam splitters

Abstract Multipartite entanglement plays a central role in optical quantum technologies. One way to entangle two photons is to prepare them in orthogonal internal states, for example, in two polarisations, and then send them through a balanced beam splitter. Post-selecting on the cases where there is one photon in each output port results in a maximally entangled state. This idea can be extended to schemes for the post-selected generation of larger entangled states. Typically, switching between different types of entangled states requires different arrangements of beam splitters and so a new experimental setup. Here, we demonstrate a simple and versatile scheme to generate different types of genuine tripartite entangled states with only one experimental setup. We send three photons through a three-port splitter and vary their internal states before post-selecting on certain output distributions. This results in the generation of tripartite W, G and GHZ states. We obtain fidelities of up to ( 87.3 ± 1.1 ) % with regard to the respective ideal states, confirming a successful generation of genuine tripartite entanglement.
