Abstract

We investigate the two-body properties of a spin-1/2 Fermi gas subject to a spin-orbit coupling induced by laser fields. When an attractive $s$-wave interaction between unlike spins is present, the system may form a dimer bound state. Surprisingly, in the presence of a Zeeman field along the direction of the spin-orbit coupling, the bound state obtains finite center-of-mass mechanical momentum, whereas under the same condition but in the absence of the two-body interaction, the system has zero total momentum. This unusual result can be regarded as a consequence of the broken Galilean invariance by the spin-orbit coupling. Such a finite-momentum bound state will have profound effects on the many-body properties of the system.

Exotic pairing states in a Fermi gas with three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling

Xiang-Fa Zhou, Guang‐Can Guo, Wei Zhang +1 more

We investigate properties of exotic pairing states in a three-dimensional Fermi gas with three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling and an effective Zeeman field. The interplay of spin-orbit coupling, effective Zeeman field, and pairing can lead to first-order phase transitions between different phases, and to interesting nodal superfluid states with gapless surfaces in the momentum space. We then demonstrate that pairing states with zero center-of-mass momentum are unstable against Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states, with a finite center-of-mass momentum opposite to the direction of the effective Zeeman field. Unlike conventional FFLO states, these FFLO states are induced by the coexistence of spin-orbit coupling and Fermi surface deformation, and have intriguing features like first-order transitions between different FFLO states, nodal FFLO states with gapless surfaces in momentum space, and exotic fully gapped FFLO states. With the recent theoretical proposals for realizing three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling in ultracold atomic gases, our work is helpful for future experimental studies and provides valuable information for the general understanding of pairing physics in spin-orbit-coupled fermionic systems.

Triplet character of 2D-fermion dimers arising from $s$-wave attraction via spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting

Ulrich Ebling, Ulrich Zülicke, Joachim Brand

We theoretically study spin-1/2 fermions confined to two spatial dimensions and experiencing isotropic short-range attraction in the presence of both spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman spin splitting -- a prototypical system for developing topological superfluidity in the many-body sector. Exact solutions for two-particle bound states are found to have a triplet contribution that dominates over the singlet part in an extended region of parameter space where the combined Zeeman- and center-of-mass-motion-induced spin-splitting energy is large. The triplet character of dimers is purest in the regime of weak s-wave interaction strength. Center-of-mass momentum is one of the parameters determining the existence of bound states, which we map out for both two- and one-dimensional types of spin-orbit coupling. Distinctive features emerging in the orbital part of the bound-state wave function, including but not limited to its p-wave character, provide observable signatures of unconventional pairing.

Molecular state in a spin–orbital-angular-momentum coupled Fermi gas

Yiwen Han, Shi-Guo Peng, Ke-Ji Chen +1 more

We study the two-body bound states in a spin-orbital-angular-momentum (SOAM) coupled quantum gas of fermions within a tightly confined ring geometry in two dimensions. Two different configurations are considered: an attractive $s$-wave interaction exists between two spin species that are SOAM coupled and an atom with SOAM coupled internal spins interacts state selectively with another atom. For both cases, we identify the condition for the emergence of molecular states with finite orbital angular momenta. These molecular states with quantized orbital angular momenta correspond to the SOAM-coupling-induced vortices in the corresponding Fermi superfluid. We propose to detect the molecules through Raman spectroscopy with Laguerre-Gaussian lasers. As the molecular states can form above the superfluid temperature, they offer an experimentally more accessible route toward the study of the underlying pairing mechanism under SOAM coupling.

Fulde–Ferrell pairing instability in spin–orbit coupled Fermi gas

Lin Dong, Lei Jiang, Han Pu

We consider finite-momentum pairing of a superfluid ultracold Fermi gas subject to spin–orbit coupling and an effective Zeeman field. Based on our two-body and mean-field many-body calculations, we show that the Fulde–Ferrell-type superfluid dominates in both zero- and finite-temperature phase diagrams. We examine the origin and properties of this novel phase systematically.

Flow-enhanced pairing and other unusual effects in Fermi gases in synthetic gauge fields

Vijay B. Shenoy

Recent experiments on fermions in synthetic gauge fields result in systems with a spin-orbit coupling along one spatial axis, a detuning field, and a Zeeman field. We show theoretically that the presence of all three results in interesting and unusual phenomena in a system of interacting fermions (interactions described by a scattering length). For two fermions, bound states appear only over a certain range of the center-of-mass momenta. The deepest bound state appears at a nonzero center-of-mass momentum. For center-of-mass momenta without a bound state, the gauge field induces a resonance-like feature in the scattering continuum resulting in a large scattering phase shift. In the case of many particles, we demonstrate that the system, in a parameter range, shows flow-enhanced pairing, i.e., a Fulde-Farrell-Larkin-Ovchnnikov superfluid state made of robust pairs with a finite center-of-mass momentum. Yet another regime of parameters offers the opportunity to study strongly interacting normal states of spin-orbit-coupled fermionic systems utilizing the resonance-like feature induced by the synthetic gauge field.

Universal Trimers Induced by Spin-Orbit Coupling in Ultracold Fermi Gases

Zhe-Yu Shi, Xiaoling Cui, Hui Zhai

In this Letter we address the issue of how synthetic spin-orbit (SO) coupling can strongly affect three-body physics in ultracold atomic gases. We consider a system which consists of three fermionic atoms, including two spinless heavy atoms and one spin-1/2 light atom subjected to an isotropic SO coupling. We find that SO coupling can induce universal three-body bound states with a negative s-wave scattering length at a smaller mass ratio, where no trimer bound state can exist if in the absence of SO coupling. The energies of these trimers are independent of the high-energy cutoff, and therefore they are universal ones. Moreover, the resulting atom-dimer resonance can be effectively controlled by SO coupling strength. Our results can be applied to systems like a 6Li and 40K mixture.
