Abstract

In this Letter we address the issue of how synthetic spin-orbit (SO) coupling can strongly affect three-body physics in ultracold atomic gases. We consider a system which consists of three fermionic atoms, including two spinless heavy atoms and one spin-1/2 light atom subjected to an isotropic SO coupling. We find that SO coupling can induce universal three-body bound states with a negative s-wave scattering length at a smaller mass ratio, where no trimer bound state can exist if in the absence of SO coupling. The energies of these trimers are independent of the high-energy cutoff, and therefore they are universal ones. Moreover, the resulting atom-dimer resonance can be effectively controlled by SO coupling strength. Our results can be applied to systems like a 6Li and 40K mixture.

Efimov physics and universal trimers in spin-orbit-coupled ultracold atomic mixtures

Zhe-Yu Shi, Hui Zhai, Xiaoling Cui

We study the two-body and three-body bound states in ultracold atomic mixtures with one of the atoms subjected to an isotropic spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We consider a system of two identical fermions interacting with one SO-coupled atom. It is found that there can exist two types of three-body bound states, Efimov trimers and universal trimers. The Efimov trimers are energetically less favored by the SO coupling, which will finally merge into the atom-dimer threshold as increasing the SO-coupling strength. Nevertheless, these trimers exhibit a discrete scaling law incorporating the SO-coupling effect. On the other hand, the universal trimers are more favored by the SO coupling. They can be induced at negative $s$-wave scattering lengths and with smaller mass ratios than those without SO coupling. These results are obtained by both the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and exact solutions from three-body equations.

Trimer formation in ultracold gases of bosonic and fermionic molecules

Bout Marcelis, Dmitry S. Petrov, S. J. J. M. F. Kokkelmans +1 more

We consider weakly bound bosonic and fermionic heteronuclear molecules (dimers) in ultracold atomic gases, where the interspecies interaction is characterized by a large positive scattering length. We develop a new theoretical approach to solve the four-body scattering problem, which is valid when the mass ratio between the constituent atoms is sufficiently large. This approach is then used to study elastic and inelastic dimer- dimer scattering processes in the case that the light constituent atoms are fermions, while the heavy atoms can be either fermions or bosons. Due to the Fermi statistics of the light atoms, the heavy atoms experience a strong repulsion at large intermolecular distances. This leads to suppression of the collisional relaxation to universal trimer (Efimov) states and/or deeply bound molecular states. We present the formation rate of Efimov trimers as a function of the three-body parameter for several experimentally interesting systems. The competition between the formation of trimers and relaxation to deeply bound molecules is analyzed, and prospects for future studies of these systems are discussed.

Scattering and effective interactions of ultracold atoms with spin-orbit coupling

Long Zhang, Youjin Deng, Peng Zhang

We derive an analytical expression for the scattering amplitude of two ultracold atoms of arbitrary spin and with general spin-orbit (SO) coupling, on the basis of our recent work [Phys. Rev. A 86, 053608 (2012)]. As an application, we demonstrate that SO coupling can induce scattering resonance in the case with finite scattering length. The same approach can be applied to calculate the two-body bound state of SO-coupled ultracold atoms. For the ultracold spin-$1/2$ Fermi gases in three- or two- dimensional systems with SO coupling, we also obtain the renormalization relation of effective contact interaction with momentum cutoff, as well as the applicability of Huang-Yang pseudopotential.

Ultracold quantum scattering in the presence of synthetic spin-orbit coupling

Su-Ju Wang

Two-body scattering constitutes one of the most fundamental processes in various physical systems ranging from ultracold dilute quantum gases to energetic quark- gluon plasmas. In this dissertation, we study the low-energy atomic collision physics in the presence of synthetic gauge fields, which are generated by atom-light interaction. One category of synthetic gauge fields is the artificial spin-orbit coupling. We discuss three different aspects in scattering theory: ultracold collision, scattering resonance, and bound state formation from a few-body perspective when the atomic spin states are coupled with their center-of-mass motion. The understanding of the spin-orbit effects on the modification of the scattering processes not only builds the foundation of collision physics in the presence of non-abelian gauge fields but also paves the way towards unraveling the few-body correlations in many-body systems.

Universal relations for spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases in two and three dimensions

Caixia Zhang, Shi-Guo Peng, Kaijun Jiang

We present a comprehensive derivation of a set of universal relations for spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases in three or two dimensions, which follow from the short-range behavior of the two-body physics. Besides the adiabatic energy relations, the large-momentum distribution, the grand canonical potential, and pressure relation derived in our previous work for three-dimensional systems [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 060408 (2018)], we further derive high-frequency tail of the radio-frequency spectroscopy and the short-range behavior of the pair correlation function. In addition, we also extend the derivation to two-dimensional systems with Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. To simply demonstrate how the spin-orbit-coupling effect modifies the two-body short-range behavior, we solve the two-body problem in the sub-Hilbert space of zero center-of-mass momentum and zero total angular momentum, and we perturbatively take the spin-orbit-coupling effect into account at short distance, since the strength of the spin-orbit coupling should be much smaller than the corresponding scale of the finite range of interatomic interactions. The universal asymptotic forms of the two-body wave function at short distance are then derived, which are independent on the short-range details of interatomic potentials. We find that new scattering parameters emerge in the universal asymptotic forms, apart from the traditional $s$- and $p$-wave scattering length (volume) and effective ranges. This is a general and unique feature for spin-orbit-coupled systems. We show how these two-body parameters characterize the universal relations in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. This work probably sheds light on understanding the profound properties of the many-body quantum systems in the presence of the spin-orbit coupling.

Three-body problem for ultracold atoms in quasi-one-dimensional traps

Christophe Mora, Reinhold Egger, Alexander O. Gogolin

We study the three-body problem for both fermionic and bosonic cold-atom gases in a parabolic transverse trap of length scale ${a}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$. For this quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) problem, there is a two-body bound state (dimer) for any sign of the 3D scattering length $a$ and a confinement-induced scattering resonance. The fermionic three-body problem is universal and characterized by two atom-dimer scattering lengths ${a}_{\mathit{ad}}$ and ${b}_{\mathit{ad}}$. In the tightly bound ``dimer limit'' ${a}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}∕a\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$, we find ${b}_{\mathit{ad}}=0$ and ${a}_{\mathit{ad}}$ is linked to the 3D atom-dimer scattering length. In the weakly bound ``BCS limit'' ${a}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}∕a\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\infty}$, a connection to the Bethe ansatz is established, which allows for exact results. The full crossover is obtained numerically. The bosonic three-body problem, however, is nonuniversal: ${a}_{\mathit{ad}}$ and ${b}_{\mathit{ad}}$ depend both on ${a}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}∕a$ and on a parameter ${R}^{*}$ related to the sharpness of the resonance. Scattering solutions are qualitatively similar to fermionic ones. We predict the existence of a single confinement-induced three-body bound state (trimer) for bosons.
