Operator equality on entropy production in quantum Markovian master equations

Abstract

An operator equality on the entropy production for general quantum Markovian master equations is derived without resorting quantum stochastic trajectory and priori quantum definition of entropy production. We find that, the equality can be still interpreted as a consequence of time-reversal asymmetry of the nonequilibrium processes of the systems. In contrast with the classical case, however, the first order expansion of the equality does not directly related to the mean entropy production, which arises from noncommute property of operators in quantum physics.

Local approach to entropy production in the nonequilibrium dynamics of open quantum systems

Irene Ada Picatoste, Alessandra Colla, Heinz-Peter Breuer

We discuss fundamental features of the local expression for the entropy production rate of the nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of open systems and its relations to memory effects and the spectrum of the generator of the dynamics. Defining the entropy production rate as negative rate of change of the relative entropy with respect to an instantaneous fixed point, it is shown that positivity of the entropy production rate for all possible initial states implies that the real parts of the eigenvalues of the time-local generator for the quantum master equation are always negative. It is further demonstrated that Markovian dynamics, identified as P-divisibility of the quantum dynamical map, implies positivity of entropy production rate, thus providing a kind of generalized second law in the nonequilibrium regime. We also prove by means of the counterexample of a phase covariant quantum master equation that the converse of this statement is not true, i.e., there are non-Markovian dynamics for which the entropy production rate is always positive. Thus, we conclude that the emergence of negative entropy production rates is a sufficient but not necessary condition for non-Markovianity of the quantum dynamics. Finally, we also consider a recently introduced map-based notion of entropy production and show the equivalence between its positivity and Markovianity for general finite-dimensional systems.

Quantum fluctuation theorem for dissipative processes

Gabriele De Chiara, Alberto Imparato

We present a general quantum fluctuation theorem for the entropy production of an open quantum system coupled to multiple environments, not necessarily at equilibrium. Such a general theorem, when restricted to the weak-coupling and Markovian regime, holds for both local and global master equations, corroborating the thermodynamic consistency of local quantum master equations. The theorem is genuinely quantum, as it can be expressed in terms of conservation of a Hermitian operator, describing the dynamics of the system state operator and of the entropy change in the baths. The integral fluctuation theorem follows from the properties of such an operator. Furthermore, it is also valid when the system is described by a time-dependent Hamiltonian. As such, the quantum Jarzynski equality is a particular case of the general result presented here. Moreover, our result can be extended to nonthermal baths, as long as microreversibility is preserved. We present some numerical examples to showcase the exact results previously obtained. We finally generalize the fluctuation theorem to the case where the interaction between the system and the bath is explicitly taken into account. We show that the fluctuation theorem amounts to a relation between time-reversed dynamics of the global density matrix and a two-time correlation function along the forward dynamics involving the baths' entropy alone.

A quantum entropy production operator

Ge Bai, Francesco Buscemi, Valerio Scarani

Abstract We introduce a fully quantum notion of entropy production based on the non-commutative extension of the classical log-ratio between forward and reverse processes. Given a pair of quantum objects associated with the forward and reverse descriptions, we define a Hermitian entropy-production operator whose expectation value is non-negative and equal to the Belavkin–Staszewski relative entropy. The operator satisfies exact integral and detailed fluctuation theorems without requiring commutativity. We then specialize this construction to the case in which the forward process is described by a single quantum channel and the reverse process is defined inferentially, through Bayesian retrodiction relative to a prior state, with the Petz transpose map as the Bayesian inverse. In this setting, the relevant quantities can be evaluated explicitly, leading to a number of natural structural and physical properties. The framework recovers the classical formula in the commutative limit, yields explicit expressions for the average entropy production, and clarifies where the fully quantum case departs from standard thermodynamic expectations.

Statistical mechanical expression of entropy production for an open quantum system

Hiroki Majima, Akira Suzuki

A quantum statistical expression for the entropy of a nonequilibrium system is defined so as to be consistent with Gibbs’ relation, and is shown to corresponds to dynamical variable by introducing analogous to the Heisenberg picture in quantum mechanics. The general relation between system-reservoir interactions and an entropy change operator in an open quantum system, relying just on the framework of statistical mechanics and the definition of von Neumann entropy. By using this formula, we can obtain the correct entropy production in the linear response framework. The present derivation of entropy production is directly based on the first principle of microscopic time-evolution, while the previous standard argument is due to the thermodynamic energy balance.

Entropy production and information fluctuations along quantum trajectories

Bruno Leggio, Anna Napoli, ANTONINO MESSINA +1 more

Employing the stochastic wave function method, we study quantum features of stochastic entropy production in nonequilibrium processes of open systems. It is demonstrated that continuous measurements on the environment introduce an additional, nonthermal contribution to the entropy flux, which is shown to be a direct consequence of quantum fluctuations. These features lead to a quantum definition of single trajectory entropy contributions, which accounts for the difference between classical and quantum trajectories and results in a quantum correction to the standard form of the integral fluctuation theorem.

On energy exchange rate and entropy production operators in quantum fluctuation-dissipation relations

Yu. E. Kuzovlev

For quantum systems with externally time-varied Hamiltonians a definition of operators of system's energy change rate (work per unit time) and entropy production observables is suggested and discussed in the context of rigorous statistical equalities (generalized fluctuation-dissipation relations) under the Jordan-symmetrized chronological operator ordering rule.
