Transdimensional Equivalence of Universal Constants for Fermi Gases at Unitarity

Abstract

I present lattice Monte Carlo calculations for a universal four-component Fermi gas confined to a finite box and to a harmonic trap in one spatial dimension. I obtain the values ξ(1D) = 0.370(4) and ξ(1D) = 0.372(1), respectively, for the Bertsch parameter, a nonperturbative universal constant defined as the (square of the) energy of the untrapped (trapped) system measured in units of the free gas energy. The Bertsch parameter obtained for the one-dimensional system is consistent to within ~1% uncertainties with the most recent numerical and experimental estimates of the analogous Bertsch parameter for a three-dimensional spin-1/2 Fermi gas at unitarity. The finding suggests the intriguing possibility that there exists a universality between two conformal theories in different dimensions. To lend support to this study, I also compute ground state energies for four and five fermions confined to a harmonic trap and demonstrate the restoration of a virial theorem in the continuum limit. The continuum few-body energies obtained are consistent with exact analytical calculations to within ~1.0% and ~0.3% statistical uncertainties, respectively.

Numerical study of unitary fermions in one spatial dimension

Michael G. Endres

I perform lattice Monte Carlo studies of universal four-component fermion systems in one spatial dimension. Continuum few-body observables (i.e., ground-state energies and integrated contact densities) are determined for both unpolarized and polarized systems of up to eight fermions confined to a harmonic trap. Estimates of the continuum energies for four and five trapped fermions show agreement with exact analytic calculations to within approximately one percent statistical uncertainties. Continuum many-body observables are determined for unpolarized systems of up to 88 fermions confined to a finite box, and 56 fermions confined to a harmonic trap. Results are reported for universal quantities such as the Bertsch parameter, defined as the energy of the untrapped many-body system in units of the corresponding free-gas energy, and its subleading correction at large but finite scattering length. Two independent estimates of these quantities are obtained from thermodynamic limit extrapolations of continuum extrapolated observables. A third estimate of the Bertsch parameter is obtained by combining estimates of the untrapped and trapped integrated contact densities with additional theoretical input from a calculation based on Thomas-Fermi theory. All estimates of the Bertsch parameter and its subleading correction are found to be consistent to within approximately one percent statistical uncertainties. Finally, the continuum restoration of virial theorems is verified for both few- and many-body systems confined to a trap.

Lattice Monte Carlo calculations for unitary fermions in a finite box

Michael G. Endres, David B. Kaplan, Jong-Wan Lee +1 more

We perform lattice Monte Carlo simulations for up to 66 unitary fermions in a finite box using a highly improved lattice action for nonrelativistic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ fermions. We obtain a value of $0.{366}_{\ensuremath{-}0.011}^{+0.016}$ for the Bertsch parameter, defined as the energy of the unitary Fermi gas measured in units of the free gas energy in the thermodynamic limit. In addition, for up to four unitary fermions, we compute the spectrum of the lattice theory by exact diagonalization of the transfer matrix projected onto irreducible representations of the octahedral group for small to moderate size lattices, providing an independent check of our few-body simulation results. We compare our exact numerical and simulation results for the spectrum to benchmark studies of other research groups as well as perform an extended analysis of our lattice action improvement scheme, including an analysis of the errors associated with higher partial waves and finite temporal discretization.

Universality of the unitary Fermi gas: a few-body perspective

Jesper Levinsen, Pietro Massignan, Shimpei Endo +1 more

Abstract We revisit the properties of the two-component Fermi gas with short-range interactions in three dimensions, in the limit where the s -wave scattering length diverges. Such a unitary Fermi gas possesses universal thermodynamic and dynamical observables that are independent of any interaction length scale. Focusing on trapped systems of N fermions, where N ≤ 10 , we investigate how well we can determine the zero-temperature behavior of the many-body system from published few-body data on the ground-state energy and the contact. For the unpolarized case, we find that the Bertsch parameters extracted from trapped few-body systems all lie within 15% of the established value. Furthermore, the few-body values for the contact are well within the range of values determined in the literature for the many-body system. In the limit of large spin polarization, we obtain a similar accuracy for the polaron energy, and we estimate the polaron’s effective mass from the dependence of its energy on N . We also compute an upper bound for the squared wave-function overlap between the unitary Fermi system and the non-interacting ground state, both for the trapped and uniform cases. This allows us to prove that the trapped unpolarized ground state at unitarity has zero overlap with its non-interacting counterpart in the many-body limit N → ∞ .

Finite-size and particle-number effects in an ultracold Fermi gas at unitarity

Jens Braun, Sebastian Diehl, Michael M. Scherer

We investigate an ultracold Fermi gas at unitarity confined in a periodic box $V={L}^{3}$ using renormalization group techniques. Within this approach we can quantitatively assess the long-range bosonic order parameter fluctuations, which dominate finite-size effects. We determine the finite-size and particle-number dependence of universal quantities, such as the Bertsch parameter and the fermion gap. Moreover, we analyze how these universal observables respond to the variation of an external pairing source. Our results indicate that the Bertsch parameter saturates rather quickly to its value in the thermodynamic limit as a function of increasing box size. On the other hand, we observe that the fermion gap shows a significantly stronger dependence on the box size, in particular for small values of the pairing source. Our results may contribute to a better understanding of finite-size and particle-number effects present in Monte Carlo simulations of ultracold Fermi gases.

Virial theorem for confined universal Fermi gases

John E. Thomas

Optically-trapped two-component Fermi gases near a broad Feshbach resonance exhibit universal thermodynamics, where the properties of the gas are independent of the details of the two-body scattering interactions. We present a global proof that such a universal gas obeys the virial theorem for {\it any} trapping potential $U$ and any spin mixture, without assuming either the local density approximation or harmonic confinement. The total energy of the gas is given in scale invariant form by $E=$, where $ε$ is an {\it arbitrary} energy scale in terms of which all length and energy scales that appear in the confining potential are written. This result enables model-independent energy measurement in traps that are anharmonic as well as anisotropic by observing only the cloud profile, and provides a consistency check for many-body calculations in the universal regime.

Ab initio simulation of the universal properties of unitary Fermi gas in a harmonic trap

Yunuo Xiong, Hongwei Xiong

Chang and Bertsch [Phys. Rev. A 76, 021603(R) (2007)] proposed a simple formula for the ground state energy of a unitary Fermi gas in a harmonic trap, based on their Green's function Monte Carlo simulations of up to 22 fermions, combined with general assumptions about the universal thermodynamic behavior of the unitary Fermi gas. In this work, we perform the ab initio simulations of the ground state energy of up to one hundred fermions using the fictitious identical particle method to overcome the Fermion sign problem, and we find that the formula proposed by Chang and Bertsch remains highly accurate. Since the number of fermions we simulate is much larger than that simulated by Chang and Bertsch when they proposed the formula, our work provides strong evidence for the universal validity of the formula. Our work demonstrates that fictitious identical particles provide a valuable tool for the ab initio simulations of ultracold Fermi gases.
