Abstract

We investigate an ultracold Fermi gas at unitarity confined in a periodic box $V={L}^{3}$ using renormalization group techniques. Within this approach we can quantitatively assess the long-range bosonic order parameter fluctuations, which dominate finite-size effects. We determine the finite-size and particle-number dependence of universal quantities, such as the Bertsch parameter and the fermion gap. Moreover, we analyze how these universal observables respond to the variation of an external pairing source. Our results indicate that the Bertsch parameter saturates rather quickly to its value in the thermodynamic limit as a function of increasing box size. On the other hand, we observe that the fermion gap shows a significantly stronger dependence on the box size, in particular for small values of the pairing source. Our results may contribute to a better understanding of finite-size and particle-number effects present in Monte Carlo simulations of ultracold Fermi gases.

Transdimensional Equivalence of Universal Constants for Fermi Gases at Unitarity

Michael G. Endres

I present lattice Monte Carlo calculations for a universal four-component Fermi gas confined to a finite box and to a harmonic trap in one spatial dimension. I obtain the values ξ(1D) = 0.370(4) and ξ(1D) = 0.372(1), respectively, for the Bertsch parameter, a nonperturbative universal constant defined as the (square of the) energy of the untrapped (trapped) system measured in units of the free gas energy. The Bertsch parameter obtained for the one-dimensional system is consistent to within ~1% uncertainties with the most recent numerical and experimental estimates of the analogous Bertsch parameter for a three-dimensional spin-1/2 Fermi gas at unitarity. The finding suggests the intriguing possibility that there exists a universality between two conformal theories in different dimensions. To lend support to this study, I also compute ground state energies for four and five fermions confined to a harmonic trap and demonstrate the restoration of a virial theorem in the continuum limit. The continuum few-body energies obtained are consistent with exact analytical calculations to within ~1.0% and ~0.3% statistical uncertainties, respectively.

Lattice Monte Carlo calculations for unitary fermions in a finite box

Michael G. Endres, David B. Kaplan, Jong-Wan Lee +1 more

We perform lattice Monte Carlo simulations for up to 66 unitary fermions in a finite box using a highly improved lattice action for nonrelativistic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ fermions. We obtain a value of $0.{366}_{\ensuremath{-}0.011}^{+0.016}$ for the Bertsch parameter, defined as the energy of the unitary Fermi gas measured in units of the free gas energy in the thermodynamic limit. In addition, for up to four unitary fermions, we compute the spectrum of the lattice theory by exact diagonalization of the transfer matrix projected onto irreducible representations of the octahedral group for small to moderate size lattices, providing an independent check of our few-body simulation results. We compare our exact numerical and simulation results for the spectrum to benchmark studies of other research groups as well as perform an extended analysis of our lattice action improvement scheme, including an analysis of the errors associated with higher partial waves and finite temporal discretization.

Onset of a Pseudogap Regime in Ultracold Fermi Gases

Piotr Magierski, Gabriel Wlazłowski, Aurel Bulgac

We show, using an ab initio approach based on Quantum Monte Carlo technique, that the pseudogap regime emerges in ultracold Fermi gases close to the unitary point. We locate the onset of this regime at a value of the interaction strength corresponding to (k(F)a)(-1)≈-0.05 (a-scattering length). We determine the evolution of the gap as a function of temperature and interaction strength in the Fermi gas around the unitary limit and show that our results exhibit a remarkable agreement with the recent wave-vector resolved radio frequency spectroscopy data. Our results indicate that a finite temperature structure of the Fermi gas around unitarity is more complicated and involves the presence of the phase with preformed Cooper pairs, which, however, do not contribute to the long range order.

Contact interaction in a unitary ultracold Fermi gas

Renato Pessoa, Stefano Gandolfi, S. A. Vitiello +1 more

An ultracold Fermi atomic gas at unitarity presents universal properties that in the dilute limit can be well described by a contact interaction. By employing a guiding function with correct boundary conditions and making simple modifications to the sampling procedure we are able to calculate the properties of a true contact interaction with the diffusion Monte Carlo method. The results are obtained with small variances. Our calculations for the Bertsch and contact parameters are in reasonable agreement with published experiments. The possibility of using a more faithful description of ultracold atomic gases can help uncover additional features of ultracold atomic gases. In addition, this work paves the way to perform quantum Monte Carlo calculations for other systems interacting with contact interactions, where the description using potentials with finite effective range might not be accurate.

Dimensional crossover in ultracold Fermi gases from functional renormalization

Bruno M. Faigle-Cedzich, Jan Martin Pawlowski, CHRISTOF WETTERICH

We investigate the dimensional crossover from three to two dimensions in an ultracold Fermi gas across the whole BCS-BEC crossover. Of particular interest is the strongly interacting regime as strong correlations and pair fluctuations are more pronounced in reduced dimensions. Our results are obtained from first principles within the framework of the functional renormalization group (FRG). Here, the confinement of the transverse direction is imposed by means of periodic boundary conditions. We calculate the equation of state, the gap parameter at zero temperature, and the superfluid transition temperature across a wide range of transversal confinement length scales. Particular emphasis is put on the determination of the finite-temperature phase diagram for different confinement length scales. In the end, our results are compared with recent experimental observations and we discuss them in the context of other theoretical works.

Unitary p -wave Fermi gas in one dimension

Hiroyuki Tajima, Shoichiro Tsutsui, Takahiro M. Doi +1 more

We elucidate universal many-body properties of a one-dimensional, two-component ultracold Fermi gas near the $p$-wave Feshbach resonance. The low-energy scattering in this system can be characterized by two parameters, that is, $p$-wave scattering length and effective range. At the unitarity limit where the $p$-wave scattering length diverges and the effective range is reduced to zero without conflicting with the causality bound, the system obeys universal thermodynamics as observed in a unitary Fermi gas with contact $s$-wave interaction in three dimensions. It is in contrast to a Fermi gas with the $p$-wave resonance in three dimensions in which the effective range is inevitably finite. We present the universal equation of state in this unitary $p$-wave Fermi gas within the many-body $T$-matrix approach as well as the virial expansion method. Moreover, we examine the single-particle spectral function in the high-density regime where the virial expansion is no longer valid. On the basis of the Hartree-like self-energy shift at the divergent scattering length, we conjecture that the equivalence of the Bertsch parameter across spatial dimensions holds even for a one-dimensional unitary $p$-wave Fermi gas.
